Use CompTIA’s current official SY0-701 objectives as your checklist, study to the skills they describe, and track uncertain answers and missed questions against specific objectives. The exam objectives specify a 90-minute exam with up to 90 questions, including multiple-choice and performance-based questions.
Start with the exam’s scope and format
CompTIA’s SY0-701 Exam Objectives Version 6.0 describes five domains and recommends candidates have at least two years of IT administration experience focused on security, hands-on technical information-security experience, and broad knowledge of security concepts. These are recommendations, not stated eligibility requirements. If you are new to IT or have limited security experience, expect the plan to require more time than it may for an experienced administrator.

CompTIA says the certification assesses whether a candidate can evaluate enterprise security posture, recommend and implement security solutions, secure hybrid environments, apply governance, risk, compliance, regulation, and policy awareness, and identify, analyze, and respond to security events and incidents. That scope calls for applying concepts to situations, not just memorizing definitions.

#1 Best Overall
| Domain | Exam weight | Study implication |
|---|---|---|
| General Security Concepts | 12% | Establish foundational understanding early, then revisit it when later topics depend on it. |
| Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations | 22% | Give it a substantial block and practice distinguishing related threats and mitigations. |
| Security Architecture | 18% | Practice reasoning about design choices, trust boundaries, and mitigation selection. |
| Security Operations | 28% | Reserve the largest block of the schedule for objective-by-objective study and scenario practice. |
| Security Program Management and Oversight | 20% | Set aside focused time for governance, risk, compliance, and oversight concepts. |
Set up a study system before Day 1
- Get the current objectives. Download CompTIA’s official SY0-701 exam objectives and check the document version against the exam materials currently posted by CompTIA. Version 6.0 is the source for the format and domain weights used in this plan; recheck the current posting before relying on it.
- Turn the objectives into a tracker. Give every objective a status such as “not started,” “uncertain,” or “can explain and apply.” Add a note for each missed or guessed practice question identifying the relevant objective and why your answer was wrong or uncertain.
- Choose study materials by fit, not volume. Check whether a book, course, or question bank explicitly aligns to SY0-701 and the objectives version you plan to use; includes both multiple-choice and performance-based practice; explains answers; and is current. Select text, video, practice, or hands-on activities according to how you learn. Check the provider’s current price and access terms directly before buying.
- Use practice questions as feedback. Prefer explanations that point to the underlying concept or objective. Do not treat third-party questions as actual CompTIA exam questions, and do not memorize answer keys in place of learning why an answer is appropriate.
A flexible 30-day SY0-701 roadmap
This is a proposed framework based on the exam format and domain weights, not a tested or guaranteed passing method. Fit the sessions to your available study time; the objective is to work through the exam scope and repair weak areas, not to meet an arbitrary daily-hour target.
Days 1–2: Establish a baseline
- Read through the official objectives and mark unfamiliar or uncertain items.
- Take a representative diagnostic quiz if you have one available. Treat its results as a map of gaps, not as a prediction of your exam result.
- For every missed or guessed item, record the related objective and what made the answer difficult.
Days 3–7: Build foundations and begin threats
- Study General Security Concepts (12%) and begin Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations (22%).
- Write short explanations in your own words. Practice distinguishing concepts that sound similar, including controls and attack concepts.
- Use questions to check understanding, then update your objective tracker with the concepts that remain unclear.
Days 8–13: Finish threats and study architecture
- Complete the Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations objectives, then cover Security Architecture (18%).
- Work through scenarios involving design choices, trust boundaries, and selecting mitigations. Explain why an option fits the scenario rather than only naming a term.
- Return to any foundational objective that is blocking your understanding of a later one.
Days 14–21: Give operations the largest block
- Study Security Operations (28%) objective by objective.
- Use scenario practice to apply the concepts. Add hands-on or simulated exercises when they help you understand an objective; the plan does not make any particular lab a requirement.
- Keep logging missed and guessed questions against objectives so you can distinguish broad knowledge gaps from isolated slips.
Days 22–25: Cover program management and oversight
- Study Security Program Management and Oversight (20%).
- Review uncertain objectives from all five domains, prioritizing concepts you cannot yet explain or apply.
- Check that your study materials still match the official objectives you are using.
Days 26–28: Practice both question formats and repair gaps
- Use timed practice that includes both multiple-choice and performance-based formats.
- Review the reasoning behind each answer, map misses to objectives, and use follow-up study to address weak areas.
- Choose practice that teaches the underlying concept rather than relying on a target score or memorized answer set. The cited official objectives do not establish a required practice-test threshold or raw passing percentage.
Days 29–30: Final review and logistics
- Recheck CompTIA’s current exam objectives and review the objectives you still find uncertain.
- Confirm your appointment requirements and prepare identification and any travel or testing logistics that apply to your appointment.
- Protect time for rest rather than filling the final hours with unfamiliar material.
Adjust the schedule to your starting point
A month is a calendar framework, not a fixed measure of effort. CompTIA’s recommended experience means the same 30-day plan may be a different lift for an experienced IT administrator than for a first-time learner.
Rank #2
- If you are new to IT or security: Extend the plan and spend more time building the foundations before advancing through unfamiliar objectives.
- If you have limited study time each day: Spread the day ranges across more calendar days instead of skipping objectives or rushing practice review.
- If your baseline shows broad gaps: Reallocate time toward the objectives you cannot explain or apply, while still checking every domain.
- If you already have relevant experience: Use the tracker to identify what needs review rather than spending equal time on objectives you can already handle confidently.
How to tell whether your preparation is useful
Do not use a single diagnostic result or an unsupported score cutoff as proof that you are ready. A more useful checkpoint is whether you can work through the objectives with understanding: explain a concept in your own words, recognize it in a scenario, choose a plausible response, and learn from questions you miss.
- Can you identify the objective behind a question you missed?
- Can you explain why the correct response fits the scenario and why your original choice did not?
- Have you practiced both multiple-choice and performance-based questions?
- Does your study material align with the SY0-701 objectives version you intend to use?
CompTIA’s Version 6.0 objectives state: “The CompTIA Security+ certification exam will certify the successful candidate has the knowledge and skills required to:” The document then describes the security skills covered by the certification. Use that stated scope, rather than a promise of a particular outcome, to guide your preparation.
