Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A CPU runs faster only when the workload, cooling, power limits, and system settings give it room to do so. Start by finding what is actually slowing the PC: a busy processor may be the cause, but high memory or disk use, startup apps, low storage, outdated software, or older hardware can look like a CPU problem. Measure first, use low-risk Windows adjustments, then consider hardware or processor-specific tuning only if the evidence points there.
How to tell whether the CPU is slowing down your PC
Check what is using system resources while the slowdown is happening. In Windows, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and review the Processes and Performance views. Look at CPU, memory, and disk activity; a high CPU reading by itself does not show whether the processor is the root cause. Note whether the problem affects the whole PC or only one application.

- If one process is consuming substantial CPU, determine whether it is a program you need, an update, or a background task before changing processor settings.
- If memory or disk activity is the constraint, CPU overclocking is unlikely to address the underlying cause.
- Review startup applications in Task Manager and disable only items you recognize and do not need at startup.
- Install appropriate Windows and driver updates, and check that the system drive has free space.
Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance covers resource use, startup apps, storage, updates, and power settings. Software cleanup may help an overloaded or misconfigured system, but older hardware may see little improvement from software changes alone.

Why maximum clock speed is not a sustained-speed promise
A processor’s advertised maximum boost clock is a ceiling it may reach in suitable conditions, not a guarantee that every core will remain at that speed during a long, demanding workload. Boost is dynamic: the processor responds to workload demand and available thermal, power, and current headroom. A brief, lightly threaded task can therefore reach a higher clock than sustained work using many cores.

On supported AMD Ryzen processors, Precision Boost 2 automatically raises frequency when the active workload needs more performance and the processor and platform remain within their operating limits. AMD identifies temperature, workload, active cores, socket power, motherboard current, firmware and software configuration, and the processor’s maximum boost limit as relevant factors. Its Precision Boost 2 explanation describes AMD-specific behavior; it is not a promise for every CPU brand or model.
Improve the basics before changing CPU settings
Make sure the cooling system can do its job
Cooling affects the thermal headroom available to automatic boost. Check that the cooler is appropriate for the processor and workload, firmly mounted, and connected; also make sure case airflow is not obstructed. AMD lists thermal paste, cooler capability and mounting, and case airflow among the factors that can affect Precision Boost 2 behavior. Its processor handling guidance discusses thermal grease and heatsink installation.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
Do not assume that buying a new cooler is the answer. First look for evidence that current cooling is inadequate, such as performance declining as the system heats up. If a replacement is justified, verify CPU-socket compatibility, case clearance, and workload needs before choosing one.

Choose Windows power mode for the situation
On a plugged-in Windows PC where responsiveness matters more than energy use, Best performance mode may allow the processor to operate at higher performance when needed. Microsoft documents the tradeoff: the mode uses more power and can make a laptop warmer while reducing battery life. It is not a universal performance fix or a guarantee of a measurable speed increase. Windows power management is designed to balance performance expectations with energy efficiency, as described in Microsoft’s processor power management documentation.

To find the power mode, open Settings > System > Power & battery in Windows 11, then choose a mode under Power mode. Available labels and options can vary by device and Windows version. On a laptop, use a higher-performance mode when plugged in if needed, and switch back when battery life or lower heat matters more.
Benchmark before and after a change
A benchmark gives you a baseline so you can judge whether a change helped the workload you care about. Record the benchmark result, temperatures, and stability under the same conditions before and after tuning. Also note power use and, on a laptop, battery behavior. A higher peak clock alone does not establish that the system is better: sustained performance, heat, power, and reliability matter too.

Intel’s BIOS overclocking guide recommends capturing baseline performance, monitoring system vitals, and checking stability. Monitoring and benchmark tools can show how a particular system behaves; results from one processor, motherboard, or workload should not be treated as a prediction for another.
When to consider platform-specific CPU tuning
Intel systems
Some Intel processors and motherboards expose CPU tuning controls in firmware, but menu names and available settings vary by motherboard and processor. Follow the documentation for the exact hardware, benchmark before changing settings, monitor temperatures, and verify stability. Do not copy another system’s frequency or voltage values: the evidence here does not establish a safe, universal setting.

Supported AMD Ryzen systems
AMD’s Ryzen Master User Guide 3.1.0, released May 20, 2026, describes Default, Eco Mode, AMD Spec, and Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO)-related controls. PBO can permit operation beyond default infrastructure limits up to motherboard limits, potentially supporting higher sustained frequencies. Availability and operating behavior depend on the specific processor and platform; these controls do not apply to every CPU or system. Consult the Ryzen Master 3.1.0 user guide and the hardware maker’s documentation before using them.
Understand the risks before manual overclocking
Manual overclocking is optional, and higher frequency or voltage can increase heat and power demand. AMD warns that overclocking may cause instability, shorten hardware lifespan, or damage hardware; Intel advises monitoring temperatures and system stability. A setting that works on one CPU and motherboard may fail on another.
- Change only settings supported by the CPU and motherboard documentation.
- Make small changes and test one variable at a time, so you can identify what caused a change in results.
- Monitor temperature and stability during the workload you actually use, not just at idle.
- Keep a way to return to default settings, following the hardware maker’s instructions.
No single safe voltage or temperature ceiling applies to every CPU. Use the processor and motherboard vendors’ guidance for the exact hardware rather than a generic number.
