A custom ExtendScript can automate barcode creation, but first validate the ISBN, confirm the script works in your InDesign release, and check the exported proof against your printer’s specifications.
ISBN and barcode: what you are creating
An ISBN identifies a publication; it is not itself a barcode. The retail symbol used for books is generally EAN-13, which encodes the ISBN-13 for scanning. ISBN.org, the U.S. ISBN Agency, explains that the ISBN system changed to a 13-digit format on January 1, 2007, and cautions that an ISBN is a number, not a barcode (ISBN.org: About the ISBN Standard).

InDesign’s QR Code feature does not produce the conventional vertical-bar EAN-13 symbol. Entering an ISBN into the QR Code dialog creates a QR code instead. This distinction is also explained in an Adobe Community discussion about ISBN codes.
Start with the assigned ISBN
Use the ISBN assigned to the specific publication by its publisher or the appropriate national ISBN agency. Agencies are designated by country, and ISBN.org warns that numbers from unofficial sources may not identify the publisher accurately (ISBN.org: About the ISBN Standard).

If you have a legacy 10-digit ISBN, do not convert it by merely adding 978 at the beginning. The conversion must include recalculating the final check digit, which can change. ISBN.org provides information about ISBN-10 and ISBN-13, and its guidance should take precedence over a script’s automatic handling (ISBN.org ISBN converter).
Eligibility is a separate question from barcode creation. The International ISBN Agency describes which types of products can qualify and advises publishers to contact their national ISBN agency when they are unsure whether a specific product is eligible (International ISBN Agency: What is an ISBN?).

Choose a barcode workflow

Adobe describes scripts as a way to automate document processing and extend InDesign (Adobe InDesign developer resources). The right approach depends on whether you need ISBN-specific validation, editable in-document output, batch generation, control over the human-readable digits, and compatibility with your installed version.

Validate the ISBN before generating bars
A correct EAN-13 check digit does not prove that the number is an assigned ISBN. BookBarcode’s manual distinguishes general EAN-13 validity from ISBN-13 validation (BookBarcode manual). A reliable workflow should reject malformed or incomplete input, normalize only expected punctuation, and check the ISBN-13 check digit before drawing the barcode. Verify that your chosen script performs ISBN-specific validation rather than merely producing a mathematically valid EAN symbol.

- Confirm the source number. Copy the ISBN assigned to this edition and format of the publication. For an ISBN-10, use a proper conversion that recalculates the check digit.
- Enter the ISBN-13. Follow the script’s documented input format. Remove spaces or hyphens only if the script permits them; do not delete or alter digits to make a validation error disappear.
- Check the validation result. If the script rejects the number, compare it with the publisher’s ISBN record or verify the conversion with an authoritative ISBN resource. Do not treat a generic EAN checksum pass as proof of ISBN assignment.
Run the ExtendScript in InDesign
The exact installation method depends on the script and InDesign release. Adobe’s developer material explains the role of scripts in automating InDesign, while Indiscripts gives product-specific installation directions for BookBarcode; neither establishes that a custom JSX script will work unchanged in every current release.
- Check the script’s documentation. Confirm that the file type and supported InDesign versions match your setup. The DTPTIPS article describes its custom implementation, but its current compatibility with the 2026 InDesign release has not been established (DTPTIPS article).
- Install it in the appropriate Scripts Panel folder. For BookBarcode specifically, Indiscripts directs users to place its JSXBIN file in a Scripts Panel folder and open the panel through Window > Automation > Scripts. This is product-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every script or InDesign version uses identical labels or locations (Indiscripts: BookBarcode).
- Run it on a working document. Use a copy of the cover file while checking the generated object, its text, and its placement. If the script errors or produces unexpected output, stop and check the maintainer’s compatibility notes rather than assuming the barcode is valid.
Place and preserve the barcode artwork
Place the barcode where the publisher, distributor, and printer require it. The International ISBN Agency says a printed book’s ISBN should appear on the copyright page or title page. If the book has no barcode, it advises also placing the ISBN on the back cover or jacket, preferably in the lower-right area (International ISBN Agency: What is an ISBN?).

- Keep the bars’ proportions intact; avoid stretching, skewing, or adding effects that interfere with scanning.
- Preserve the quiet areas around the symbol and maintain strong contrast between bars and background. A tool’s quiet-zone guide is not a substitute for the printer’s requirements.
- Keep the human-readable ISBN visible and legible, and ensure it matches the digits encoded in the bars.
- Do not assume a universal minimum size or print-grade requirement. Confirm dimensions, color, placement, and delivery format with the printer for the relevant territory and distribution channel.
Decide whether an EAN-5 price add-on is needed
Some workflows add a five-digit EAN-5 supplement, often for price information, alongside the EAN-13. It is not universally required. The Adobe Community discussion describes the common EAN-13 symbol and notes that a five-digit price code may be used in some contexts; the DTPTIPS article says its script supports an optional EAN-5 (Adobe Community discussion; DTPTIPS article). Check with the publisher, distributor, and printer before adding one.

Export and verify a proof
- Export a print proof using the settings required by the printer, then inspect the barcode at its final printed size rather than relying only on an enlarged view in InDesign.
- Scan the proof with a phone app or handheld barcode reader. An Adobe Community Expert recommends scanning and comparing the decoded digits with the ISBN (Adobe Community discussion).
- Check the visible digits and layout. Confirm the readable number matches the assigned ISBN and that the artwork has not been clipped, distorted, or placed against a background that reduces contrast.
- Complete the printer’s preflight. A successful scan checks basic encoding and readability; it does not certify compliance with every printer or retailer requirement.
