To secure a Windows 11 PC, review its protections in the Windows Security app, keep Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Windows Firewall enabled, choose safer sign-in and network settings, check device encryption, and install updates. These built-in features reduce risk; none makes a device invulnerable. Some options depend on your PC’s hardware and firmware, Windows setup, or organization policy.
Start with the Windows Security app
Search the Start menu for Windows Security. Its overview shows the status of key protection areas. Green, yellow, and red icons indicate whether an area appears protected or needs attention; open an area to see details and available actions. On a work- or school-managed PC, an administrator may control or disable some settings.

The main areas to review are Virus & threat protection, Account protection, Firewall & network protection, App & browser control, and Device security. Protection history shows actions Windows has taken, such as handling a detected threat. Microsoft’s Windows Security app guide explains the dashboard and its protection areas.
Keep antivirus protection on and run scans when needed
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows Security. Its real-time protection checks files and activity as you use the PC. Unless you have a specific, informed reason to change it, leave real-time protection on: Microsoft warns that files opened or downloaded are not scanned while it is off. Microsoft also says the feature turns itself back on after a period.

Run a quick scan
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Select Quick scan and let Windows check common locations for threats.
For a particular file or folder, open File Explorer, right-click it, and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender. On some Windows 11 context menus, first select Show more options. See Microsoft’s instructions for using Windows Security for scan and protection details.
Check the firewall and network profile
Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection to see the active network profile and firewall status. Windows distinguishes among domain, private, and public profiles. Use the profile that matches the network’s trust level:
| Profile | When it fits | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Public | A network you do not trust, such as Wi-Fi at a coffee shop. | Use this when you do not want your PC treated as part of a trusted local network. |
| Private | A trusted network, such as your home network. | Use only when you trust the other devices and network; some local sharing features may rely on this profile. |
| Domain | A network managed by an organization. | Settings may be controlled by your organization’s administrator. |
Keep the firewall on. If it blocks an app you need, Microsoft recommends allowing that app through the firewall rather than turning the firewall off. Review Microsoft’s firewall and network profile guidance; policy may prevent changes on managed devices.

Review app, download, and website protections
Open Windows Security > App & browser control to review Microsoft Defender SmartScreen and related protections, including controls for potentially unwanted apps and phishing. SmartScreen can check websites and downloaded files and warn or block when it recognizes a known risk. It is a layer of defense, not a guarantee that every harmful file or site will be detected.
Microsoft also describes Smart App Control as using publisher and reputation signals to decide whether apps are allowed. Its availability and behavior depend on the Windows version and device setup, so check what appears on your PC rather than assuming it is available. Microsoft’s overview of Windows 11 smart security features describes these protections.
Choose sign-in options that suit your PC
In Windows Security, open Account protection to reach Windows Hello and Dynamic Lock settings. Windows Hello provides supported sign-in options, such as a PIN or biometric sign-in when compatible hardware is available. Dynamic Lock can lock the PC when you move away, using a paired device; it is a convenience feature, not a substitute for locking the PC yourself when needed. Available sign-in methods depend on the device. Microsoft’s Account protection guide explains the settings.

Check hardware security in Device security
Open Windows Security > Device security to inspect features such as Core isolation, the security processor, and Secure Boot. What appears depends on hardware and firmware configuration.

Core isolation uses virtualization to help protect core Windows processes. Review its status in Device security; availability and individual controls can vary by PC.
TPM 2.0
A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a security processor that helps protect cryptographic keys and supports Windows security features. Windows 11 system requirements specify TPM 2.0. If Windows Security does not show a security processor, a TPM may be absent or disabled in UEFI firmware. Check your PC manufacturer’s instructions before changing firmware settings. Microsoft explains TPM in its TPM overview.

Secure Boot
Secure Boot checks startup software against trusted signatures to help prevent boot-level malware from loading. Windows 11’s system requirements call for UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, but support and configuration vary by PC. Device Security can show its status; enabling it may require a firmware setting, so use the manufacturer’s instructions. Microsoft’s Secure Boot guidance explains the feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check drive encryption and safeguard the recovery key
Drive encryption helps protect data if someone accesses the storage outside Windows. Windows Device Encryption is usually enabled automatically on eligible devices. BitLocker Drive Encryption is a more configurable option for advanced scenarios. Check the encryption status through the link in Device security or the applicable Windows encryption settings.

Make sure you can access a backup of the BitLocker recovery key. If Windows asks for it, the key is needed to regain access to the encrypted drive; Microsoft says support cannot replace a lost key or generate a new one to unlock the drive. Keep a copy somewhere accessible if the PC itself is unavailable. An offline copy on a USB flash drive is one option, not a requirement or universally best method. Microsoft’s BitLocker overview covers encryption and recovery.

Install Windows updates, including Secure Boot certificate updates
Use Windows Update to receive security updates. Microsoft says updated Secure Boot certificates are rolling out: most devices receive them through Windows Update, while some may be prevented from updating and need troubleshooting. Do not assume your PC has already received the certificates. If Windows Security reports a Secure Boot certificate issue, follow Microsoft’s guidance for devices prevented from updating and consult the PC manufacturer’s instructions where appropriate.
Know what is and is not included
The protections described here are built into Windows or exposed through Windows Security, though access to some settings depends on the device or management policy. Microsoft separately describes identity-theft monitoring as an added feature for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers; it is not the same as the built-in Windows protections covered above. Feature availability can change, so check Microsoft’s Windows Security feature information for current details.
