How to Plant Wild and Fruit Trees in Stardew Valley

In Stardew Valley, regular trees and fruit trees follow different planting rules. Wild-tree seeds need no watering or clear space around them, but a wild seedling will stall if a mature tree is directly beside it. Fruit saplings need an unobstructed 3×3 area until they mature. Knowing which kind you planted is the key to getting it to grow.

Wild trees and fruit trees: what’s different?

Tree type Main purpose Space while growing Growth time Fertilizer Production
Wild tree (oak, maple, pine, or mahogany) Wood and other tree resources No general clearance requirement. A seedling cannot grow past stage 4 if a mature tree is in any of its eight adjacent tiles. Variable; growth depends on the tree and conditions. Tree Fertilizer can speed growth. Does not produce fruit.
Fruit tree Seasonal fruit Keep the full 3×3 area around the sapling clear until it matures; fruit-tree growth areas must not overlap. 28 days. Tree Fertilizer does not work. Outdoors, bears fruit in its associated season; in the Greenhouse or on Ginger Island, produces daily after maturity.

For the detailed rules, see the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Trees page and its Fruit Trees page.

How to plant and grow a wild tree

Plant the seed

Place an acorn, maple seed, pine cone, or mahogany seed on a valid tile. Wild-tree seeds do not need watering or a clear area around them. They can even be planted on paved ground.

Check the seedling’s neighbors

Although wild seeds do not need a cleared planting area, a seedling cannot advance beyond growth stage 4 if a mature tree occupies any of the eight tiles directly around it—above, below, beside, or diagonally adjacent. If a seedling seems stuck at that stage, check those neighboring tiles and remove or relocate the obstruction if possible.

Wait or use Tree Fertilizer

Wild-tree growth time varies. Tree Fertilizer accelerates eligible trees: fertilized trees advance one growth stage each night, except that stage 4 takes two days; mahogany trees generally take longer. These are game mechanics, not a guarantee that every tree will grow on a fixed schedule.

How to plant fruit trees without blocking growth

Choose a clear 3×3 area

  1. Find untilled ground and choose the center tile of a 3×3 square.
  2. Plant the fruit sapling in that center tile.
  3. Keep all nine tiles clear of objects, flooring or paths, and terrain features until the tree matures. Check for newly spawned debris if growth is blocked.

Grass, seed spots, and artifact spots are exceptions to the game’s clear-area rule. A second fruit tree’s 3×3 growth area cannot overlap the first. In practical terms, leave two tiles between fruit-tree trunks in each direction.

Let it mature

Fruit trees take 28 days to mature. They do not need watering, do not die in winter, and saplings can be planted in any season. Once a tree is mature, nearby objects and flooring no longer block fruit production.

Plan for fruiting season

Outside special locations, a mature fruit tree produces fruit during its associated season. Fruit can accumulate for up to three days before harvest. Planting a sapling ahead of its fruiting season gives it time to mature.

What changes in the Greenhouse and on Ginger Island?

In the Greenhouse, fruit trees can be planted in the center soil or around the border. Trees in the Greenhouse and on Ginger Island produce fruit every day after they mature, rather than only in their outdoor fruiting season. They also keep a summer appearance throughout the seasons. The 3×3 clearance rule still matters while the sapling is growing.

Tree Fertilizer: what it does and does not affect

Tree Fertilizer is a crafted item whose recipe is learned at Foraging level 7. It requires 5 Fiber and 5 Stone. Apply it to a wild-tree seed or sapling after planting it in the ground. It does not work on fruit trees or tea bushes, so it will not speed a fruit sapling’s growth. See the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Tree Fertilizer page for the item’s mechanics.

Quick troubleshooting

  • Wild sapling stuck at stage 4: Look for a mature tree in one of its eight adjacent tiles.
  • Fruit sapling says it did not grow overnight: Inspect its full 3×3 area for paths, flooring, objects, terrain features, or newly spawned debris.
  • Mature fruit tree is not producing: Check that it is the tree’s fruiting season, unless it is planted in the Greenhouse or on Ginger Island.
  • Fertilizer did not speed a fruit sapling: Tree Fertilizer affects wild trees, not fruit trees.
