Start with the simplest causes: press Windows + P and choose Extend, confirm the monitor is powered on and set to the cable’s input, then reseat or replace the cable. Disconnect docks and adapters while testing. If Windows 10 still does not show the display, use Settings > System > Display to detect it, reset the graphics driver with Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B, and update the display-adapter driver. Cross-testing the monitor and cable on another computer will show whether the fault is in the monitor, cable, adapter, port or PC.
What the symptom usually means
A second monitor can be physically connected yet appear unusable for several different reasons. Windows may be using the wrong projection mode, the monitor may be listening on a different input, a cable or port may have failed, an adapter or dock may be conflicting, or the graphics adapter may not support the number of screens you are trying to use.

“No signal” on the monitor generally means that the monitor is powered but is not receiving a usable video signal. A monitor that does not appear at all in Windows Display settings points more strongly to a connection, adapter, driver or hardware-detection problem. The order below isolates these possibilities without buying parts prematurely.
Fix the second monitor step by step
1. Select Extend with Windows + P
Press the Windows logo key and P at the same time. Select Extend from the projection panel.

- PC screen only disables the external display.
- Duplicate mirrors the screens instead of creating a separate desktop.
- Second screen only turns off the PC’s primary display.
- Extend gives you an independent desktop on both monitors.
If the monitor immediately begins showing the desktop after choosing Extend, the hardware was already connected and the problem was the projection mode.
2. Check power, input and every physical connection
- Turn the monitor on and confirm its power light is lit.
- Open the monitor’s built-in input/source menu and select the connector actually in use, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA or DVI.
- Unplug the video cable from both the computer and monitor, inspect the plugs, and reconnect them firmly.
- If you are using a dock, dongle or video adapter, disconnect it temporarily and connect the monitor directly to the computer where possible. Accessories can create compatibility conflicts, so isolation is important.
- For a desktop with a separate graphics card, check that the cable is plugged into the graphics card’s video output rather than an unused motherboard output, unless the computer maker specifies otherwise.
A monitor can report “no signal” simply because its input is set to DisplayPort while the cable is connected to HDMI. Input selection is controlled on the monitor, not in Windows.
3. Replace the cable as a diagnostic test
Try a different, known-good cable of the same connector type. This is one of Microsoft’s recommended checks and is often faster than trying to repair a cable that may have an intermittent break.
| Connection | What to verify before replacing anything |
|---|---|
| HDMI | The PC and monitor both have compatible HDMI sockets, the monitor input is set to HDMI, and the replacement cable fits securely. |
| DisplayPort | The cable is fully inserted at both ends and the monitor is set to DisplayPort. |
| VGA or DVI | The connector is the correct type for both devices and its thumbscrews are secure where present. |
| USB-C video | The particular USB-C port supports video output; not every USB-C port does. |
When buying a replacement, verify the connector on both ends, the maximum resolution and refresh rate you need, cable length and return policy. A cable that physically fits is not automatically suitable for every resolution or refresh-rate combination.

4. Test another video-output port
If the computer has more than one compatible output, move the second monitor to another port. For example, test another HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA or DVI output if available. A single damaged port can make a good monitor look defective.
On a desktop that has a discrete graphics card, connect both monitors to outputs on the same supported graphics adapter unless the computer manufacturer documents a different arrangement. Mixing a motherboard output with a graphics-card output can fail when the system firmware or driver does not support both simultaneously.
5. Ask Windows 10 to detect the display
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Scroll to Multiple displays.
- Choose the control to Detect another display.
If Windows finds the monitor, select it in the display layout and choose how you want the screens arranged. You can then use Windows + P to select Extend. If Detect reports that no display was found, continue with the driver and cross-testing steps instead of repeatedly changing desktop settings.

This shortcut does not remove the driver or change your files. Wait a few seconds after using it, then check whether the second monitor wakes up or appears in Display settings.
7. Update, or roll back, the display-adapter driver
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed graphics adapter and choose Update driver.
- Follow the on-screen option to search for an available driver, then restart Windows if prompted.
If the second monitor stopped working immediately after a driver update, use the adapter’s properties in Device Manager to check whether Roll Back Driver is available. You can also check the computer manufacturer’s support page for its Windows 10 graphics-driver package. Manufacturer packages may be necessary when a generic driver does not handle a laptop’s dock, switchable graphics or specialized ports correctly.
Do not remove the display adapter in Device Manager as a first step. Uninstalling a driver can leave you with a basic display driver and make diagnosis harder unless you already have a compatible replacement package and a recovery plan.

8. Cross-test the monitor, cable and computer
Cross-testing separates a failed component from a Windows configuration problem:

- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
- Connect the suspect monitor and its cable to another computer.
- Connect a known-good monitor and cable to the original computer.
- If an adapter or dock is involved, test without it and, if possible, test the adapter with another compatible display.
Interpret the result as follows:
| Result | Most likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| The problem follows the monitor | Monitor power, input circuitry or the monitor itself. |
| The problem follows the cable | Replace the cable with a compatible known-good model. |
| The problem follows the dock or adapter | Adapter compatibility, power, bandwidth or the dock’s video hardware. |
| A known-good monitor also fails on the same PC output | That port, the graphics adapter, its driver or Windows configuration. |
| The monitor works on another computer but not this PC | Investigate the PC’s port, driver, adapter capability and display settings. |
When Windows cannot support the number of monitors
If one external monitor works but a second external monitor never appears, the graphics adapter may simply not support more than one monitor. Microsoft warns that display-adapter capability is a hardware limit; software settings cannot create an additional output that the adapter does not provide.
Check the computer’s specifications for the supported number of displays and the maximum resolution and refresh rate. Also verify whether the outputs can be used at the same time. A laptop may have several physical connectors but still limit simultaneous screens because of its graphics hardware or firmware.
USB-C adapters and docks
A USB-C video adapter can add an output on some systems, but USB-C alone does not guarantee video support. The computer’s USB-C port must support video, and the adapter must be compatible with that implementation. Confirm the adapter’s supported resolution, refresh rate, operating-system compatibility and power requirements before purchasing.
Docks add another layer: their bandwidth is shared among displays and other peripherals, and their firmware or driver may be specific to a computer model. Test the monitor directly first. Only reconnect the dock after the direct connection works, then check the dock maker’s compatibility information for Windows 10 and your computer.

A Windows 10 version 1703 dock issue
Microsoft documented a docked-monitor issue affecting Windows 10 version 1703. For that specific release, selecting Detect in Display settings and upgrading to version 1709 were relevant remedies. This guidance applies to that historical version scenario; it is not a general instruction to install an older or unrelated release. Identify your Windows version with Start > Settings > System > About before relying on version-specific advice.
Choosing a replacement part only after diagnosis
Replacement hardware is sensible when cross-testing identifies the failed component:
- HDMI cable: the simplest replacement when another cable restores the picture. Match the connector and required resolution or refresh rate.
- USB-C video adapter: useful only when the computer’s USB-C port supports video and the adapter matches the computer and monitor standards.
- External monitor: replace it when the same monitor fails on another known-good computer and cable while another monitor works from the original PC.
- Docking station: consider one for a laptop only after confirming display count, bandwidth, USB-C or other port capability, Windows 10 support and return coverage.
Keep receipts and use a return policy when compatibility is uncertain. Buying a higher-spec cable or dock cannot overcome a graphics adapter that supports only one display.

First repeat the physical checks: updates do not repair a loose cable or change the monitor’s selected input, but those faults can appear coincidentally. Then use Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B, check Device Manager for the display adapter, and compare the installed driver with the computer manufacturer’s Windows 10 package. If the failure began directly after a driver update and Roll Back Driver is available, test the previous driver. If the problem began after a major Windows release, install the current updates supported by the computer maker rather than mixing packages intended for a different model.
