The right second-hand camera is the one that fits your lenses and photography, works reliably, and comes with a price and seller terms that reflect its condition—not necessarily the newest body or the lowest shutter count. Check compatibility first, then verify the specific camera’s history and operation before paying.
Choose a camera that fits your photography and lens system
Start with what you plan to photograph, which lenses and accessories you already own, and whether you need a body alone or a tested kit. Confirm the exact body-and-lens combination in the manufacturer’s compatibility information. A lens that physically fits may not support every feature. Nikon’s D80 compatibility information, for example, distinguishes supported functions by lens type.

If the sale includes a lens, assess it separately from the camera body: check the glass for haze, fungus, or scratches, and confirm that focus and aperture operate smoothly and communicate with the camera. Ask for professional evaluation if you cannot tell whether a suspected defect is serious.
Ask the seller for evidence before you meet
- Get the exact model name and ask for a recent, original image file from the camera, if available. It can help confirm basic operation and provide file metadata, but it is not a full condition report.
- Ask how the camera was used, such as mostly for stills or video and professionally or occasionally. Ask about impacts, moisture exposure, repairs, and service history.
- Request paperwork for major repairs or other significant service, and compare the seller’s account with the camera and any documents.
- Ask how and when the shutter count was obtained. Its meaning can depend on the model and shooting modes.
What should you check when buying a used camera?
If possible, bring a charged compatible battery, a known-good compatible lens, and a memory card. Use the camera to make and play back files rather than relying on appearance or a seller’s description.
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
Body, mount, and signs of damage
- Inspect the body for impact damage and the lens mount for visible damage or looseness.
- Look for corrosion or other moisture signs around the battery compartment, card slots, ports, hot shoe, screws, and mount.
- Check the battery compartment and battery condition; include the cost of a replacement if needed.
- Inspect an included lens for haze, fungus, or scratches, and test focus and aperture operation.
Controls, displays, and recording
- Test the buttons and dials, screen, viewfinder, ports, and card slots.
- Make a file, play it back, and verify that the camera saves it to the card. On a dual-slot body, test each slot.
- Test autofocus on a static subject and, where the model supports it, a moving one. Check stabilization if the body or lens has it.
Sensor results without touching internal parts
Look at the sensor without touching it, and use test images to check for dust or marks. A few removable dust spots are not the same as a scratch or other physical damage. Do not touch the sensor, mirror, or shutter during an inspection. Follow the exact model’s manual for cleaning instructions; Nikon’s D5200 manual warns that foreign matter inside the camera can cause damage and provides model-specific guidance.
How many shutter actuations are too many?
There is no universal shutter-count cutoff that establishes whether a used camera is a good buy. Treat the count as one clue alongside the exact model, shutter type, shooting modes, use history, condition, and price. Ask how the count was obtained and when; some modes may make it incomplete or difficult to interpret.

Use only reliable, model-specific manufacturer information when weighing a count. Nikon says the shutter in the D810A “has been tested to 200,000 cycles.” The figure applies to that model; it is not a promised lifespan for an individual camera or a threshold for other models. Nikon’s product page does not state a publication year for the figure.
A low count does not rule out problems with the sensor, autofocus, card slots, mount, electronics, or moisture damage. The count also cannot, by itself, establish how much useful life remains. Weigh the camera’s tested condition and documented history, and account for plausible repair or battery costs when deciding what to offer.

Compare the total risk and cost, not just the asking price
When comparing available cameras, consider the costs and protections that come with each specific listing. This is a way to structure a decision, not a market-price estimate.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| System fit | Does the body work with your exact lenses and accessories, including the functions you need? Will you need an adapter? |
| Condition and evidence | What did your tests show for image results, mount, controls, screen, slots, and battery? Are repair records credible? |
| Use history | Was it used mainly for stills or video, and professionally or occasionally? How does that context affect your reading of the count? |
| Total cost | What will the asking price plus any needed battery, compatible accessories, inspection, cleaning, or plausible repair expense add up to? |
| Transaction protection | Who is the seller, can you inspect the actual item, and what written return or warranty terms apply to this used camera in your country? |
A private sale may allow direct testing, but the buyer needs to assess both the camera and the transaction. A specialist retailer or service provider may offer inspection or maintenance; do not assume every seller performs the same checks or provides the same return window or warranty. Confirm the terms for the exact listing and location. For context, Nikon USA describes services including sensor cleaning, release-count verification, focus and exposure checks, and calibration on its repair and service page; that is a service example, not a guarantee about used-camera sellers.
Rank #4
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
Check returns and warranty terms for the exact used item
Before paying, get the return process, deadlines, and any warranty coverage in writing, and check that they apply to the used item and your country. Do not infer used-market protection from a manufacturer’s terms for new purchases. For example, Nikon USA states that a one-year limited warranty applies to specified new products bought through Nikon Store or an authorized dealer; that statement does not establish warranty coverage for a private used sale.
When a defect calls for professional inspection
Use the manual for the exact camera model for routine care. Nikon’s D5200 manual recommends a blower and soft cloth for specified cleaning tasks, but its instructions should not be applied automatically to other models. Avoid attempting internal cleaning or repair if you are unsure what a component is or how to handle it.
Best Value
- Increased IR sensitivity for astrophotography
- 18.0 MP CMOS sensor, ISO 100-6400, DIGIC 4 Image Processor
- Vari-angle 3.0-inch Clear View LCD
- Remote controller adapter
- Compatible with EF and EF-S lenses
Nikon’s self-service repair information says manuals, parts, and tools are available only for applicable products and warns that incorrect or unauthorized repair can damage equipment and may affect warranty or safety. For suspected internal damage or a defect you cannot confidently assess, a professional inspection is safer than experimenting.
