WireGuard supplies the VPN tunnel; wg-easy is the web-based administration layer. The project calls Compose its easiest route, but you still need to administer the host and configure network access.
What you need before installing wg-easy
- A Linux host you can administer, with a public IP address or domain name. It can be existing hardware or a server; the project does not prescribe a specific model or hosting provider.
- A supported CPU architecture. The v15.4 Getting Started guide lists x86_64 and arm64.
- Docker and Docker Compose, plus
curlfor the basic tutorial’s download step. - Access to the host’s firewall and network settings so you can allow the WireGuard endpoint and keep the administration interface appropriately protected.
The project’s v15.4 Getting Started guide uses Docker Compose as its reference deployment and directs users to the Compose tutorial. Podman and Docker Run are also documented alternatives, but the steps below follow the basic Compose route.

Choose the image tag for the version you want
Do not assume that latest means the newest wg-easy release. In its v15.4 guide, the project says latest points to v14 and should be avoided. Check the documentation and Compose file for the version you are installing before deploying or upgrading.

These tag meanings are documented in the project’s v15.4 guide. The tutorial and Compose file for your selected release are authoritative for the exact image reference and configuration.

Install with the official Docker Compose tutorial
Use the Basic Installation tutorial for the exact current file and settings. The high-level sequence is:
- Create a configuration directory: choose a directory on the host where you will keep the Compose file and related deployment configuration.
- Download the official Compose file: the tutorial provides the
curlcommand and destination. Copy it from the tutorial for the version you are deploying rather than reusing an old third-party example. - Enter the directory: change into the directory where you saved the file.
- Start the service: run
sudo docker compose up -dfrom that directory, as shown in the basic tutorial.
The Compose file defines version-dependent environment variables, ports, mounts, and Linux capabilities. Review those settings in the official file rather than guessing or copying configuration from an older guide. Persistence matters: the v15.4 Getting Started examples mount the named volume etc_wireguard at /etc/wireguard inside the container. That is where the WireGuard configuration is kept, so understand the configured volume or mount before managing or removing deployment data.

The project cautions that Compose deployments should use up and down, not start and stop, because the latter may leave the container improperly destroyed and lead to inconsistent startup state. For lifecycle details, consult the Getting Started guide.
Open the WireGuard port and protect web administration
The VPN endpoint and the browser-based administration UI are separate access concerns. The basic tutorial says to allow UDP 51820 through the firewall for WireGuard by default. If the Compose configuration changes the WireGuard port, adjust the firewall rule to match it; 51820 is not the only possible configuration.

Do not treat the administration UI as just another VPN port. The project README recommends setting up a reverse proxy for secure access to the Web UI from the internet and describes that as optional. If you do not use a proxy, follow the project’s reverse-proxy-free access guidance instead of exposing management access without a security plan. The README lists features including two-factor authentication (2FA) and OpenID Connect (OIDC); consult documentation matching your installed version for setup details.
A third-party Vultr 2025 walkthrough illustrates one possible arrangement using Nginx Proxy Manager and Let’s Encrypt. It is an example, not the source of truth for current wg-easy configuration. If you follow that walkthrough’s proxy setup, replace Nginx Proxy Manager’s initial credentials as it instructs.

Access the UI and add a WireGuard client
After starting the service, use the address and access method configured in your Compose file and, if applicable, your reverse proxy. The precise URL, port, and authentication setup depend on that configuration; the official tutorial and matching version’s documentation provide the relevant values.
- Open the wg-easy Web UI using the address you configured.
- Create a client in the interface. The project README lists client creation, editing, deletion, enabling and disabling, expiration, connection status, traffic charts, QR-code display, and configuration download among its features.
- On the client device, install WireGuard client software. Import the downloaded configuration or scan the profile’s displayed QR code where the device and client support it.
- Connect from the WireGuard client and check the status in the UI.
Creating a profile in wg-easy does not install WireGuard on the phone or computer; each device still needs a compatible WireGuard client.

Update wg-easy without discarding its configuration
From the directory containing the Compose file, the official update tutorial’s sequence is to pull the configured image and recreate the service:
- Run
docker compose pull. - Run
docker compose up -d.
These commands are from the project’s Basic Installation and update guidance. Before updating, check the instructions for your selected major version and confirm that your persistent configuration volume remains in place. The v15.4 guide recommends pinning to the latest major version rather than relying on latest.
