Search Console’s country data and Google Analytics 4’s country data are not two views of the same dataset, so their totals should not match. Search Console groups Google Search performance by the country where the search originated. GA4 groups measured activity on your tagged site or app by the country the activity came from, using IP-based geography. One describes visibility and clicks in search results. The other describes what happened after people arrived.
What each country field means
Search Console: where the search originated
In the Performance report for Search results, the country dimension groups data by the country where the search originated. The metrics are clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position, and the report covers your site’s performance in Google Search. It is not a count of every visit or visitor in a country.

GA4: where measured activity originated
The predefined Country user dimension describes the country from which user activity originated. Google says geography dimensions such as city and region are approximated from the traffic’s IP address. GA4 uses IP addresses at collection time to determine location and discards them before data is logged in a data center or server.

- Different events. Search Console records impressions and clicks in Google Search. GA4 records activity only after a user reaches a page or app carrying your tag. A click is not a session, and an impression is not a user.
- Different collection systems. The two products gather and process data independently, so don’t assume they share attribution or collection logic.
- Approximate geography in GA4. Location is derived from IP address, so it is an estimate.
- GA4 report behavior. Standard reports and Explorations can differ because of supported fields, filtering, date ranges, thresholds, modeling and processing time.
- Scope of the sources. Search Console covers Google Search traffic only, while GA4 includes every channel that reaches your tagged site or app. Differences in property or stream coverage also matter.
Which tool answers which question
| Question | Use | What “country” means |
|---|---|---|
| Where do searches that show my pages come from, and how do my pages perform there? | Search Console Performance report | Country where the search originated; read impressions, clicks, CTR and average position. |
| Where does activity on my site or app come from? | GA4 report with the Country dimension | Country of user activity, approximated from IP. |
| How does search performance compare between two countries? | Search Console | Use a comparison of two values in the country grouping. |
| How do I split a GA4 detail report by country? | GA4, where the report supports it | Per the detail-report controls, change the table dimension or add a temporary second dimension. |
How to compare the two without drawing false conclusions
- Decide first whether you’re asking about search visibility or about measured site or app activity.
- Use the same date range. Confirm the Search Console property and the GA4 property or stream cover the same pages.
- Compare like with like, and state each metric’s scope. Don’t set impressions against sessions, or treat clicks as sessions.
- In Search Console, add a country filter or use Compare for two countries. Only one comparison can be active at a time. Per Google’s filtering documentation, filtering can affect totals where query truncation or anonymized queries are involved.
- In GA4, select Country in a report that supports it and check any data-quality notices shown.
- Treat the result as directional context. A country ranking that broadly agrees in both tools is a useful signal. Exact equality is not a reasonable expectation.
Using the linked Search Console report inside GA4
If you link the two products, GA4’s Queries report displays Search Console metrics alongside compatible dimensions, including Country. These remain Search Console metrics. Adding GA4’s Country dimension doesn’t turn them into Analytics visits. Availability depends on Search Console verification, stream setup and the selected web stream, so check the linked stream and the dates for which data exists before interpreting it.

What this article can’t tell you
Google’s documentation explains the definitions and the reasons for differences, but it doesn’t give a typical size of discrepancy. To diagnose a specific gap on your own site, you’d need to inspect the properties, date ranges, configuration and data-quality notices in both tools.
