For most solo players, Genshin Impact is the best starting point. It is an open-world game, and PlayStation’s official page says outright: “Travel alone or hunt together.” If you would rather have urban, mission-based action combat, pick Zenless Zone Zero. If you want a story-led space-fantasy journey, pick Honkai: Star Rail. Nothing in the official listings supports a universal ranking, so this comparison goes by the kind of play each game offers.
Quick pick by play style
| If you want… | Choose | What the official listings say |
|---|---|---|
| Roaming, exploring, environmental puzzles | Genshin Impact | Open-world adventure; seven elements used for puzzles and combat; solo or with friends (PlayStation). Xbox lists single-player and online multiplayer (2–4). |
| Action combat and commissions in a city setting | Zenless Zone Zero | Urban fantasy action RPG; Hollow exploration, commissions, New Eridu (PlayStation). Steam labels it single-player, free-to-play, with in-app purchases. |
| A story-driven space-fantasy trip | Honkai: Star Rail | Journey across worlds aboard the Astral Express with companions; online play required (PlayStation Store). |
The listings do not provide a trustworthy cross-game figure for free currency, banner odds, session length or solo-player satisfaction. This article therefore does not rank the games on generosity or time demands.
Genshin Impact: the exploration pick
PlayStation describes Genshin as an open-world adventure with a roster of characters who have different playstyles. The same page says you can fight by yourself or invite friends, and that elemental abilities across seven elements serve both puzzles and attacks. Xbox lists it as free-to-play with single-player and online multiplayer modes, and as available on Xbox Series X|S.

That makes it the best-documented option for someone who wants to wander at their own pace and build a party over time. The caveat: “solo” here means you are not required to group up. The listings do not describe an offline mode, and the PlayStation Store entry frames the game in an online-account context.
Zenless Zone Zero: the action-and-missions pick
PlayStation describes Zenless Zone Zero as an urban fantasy action RPG built around exploring Hollows, fighting strong enemies, completing commissions and uncovering mysteries in New Eridu. It calls the combat accessible to newcomers with strategic depth. Steam’s listing is more concrete: attacks, special attacks, dodges, blocks and combos, with enemy weaknesses shaping your choices.
#1 Best Overall
- ENTER THE WORLD OF SKYRIM: Experience the legendary open-world RPG as a tabletop adventure, exploring Tamriel through branching quests, iconic factions, and rich Elder Scrolls lore.
- COOPERATIVE OR SOLO PLAY: Designed for 1–4 players, allowing you to adventure solo or team up to face dragons, uncover conspiracies, and shape the fate of Skyrim together.
- OPEN-ENDED QUEST SYSTEM: Choose how you approach each mission—diplomacy, stealth, or combat—as your decisions permanently impact the story and the world around you.
- DEEP CHARACTER PROGRESSION: Build unique heroes with evolving skills, gear, and abilities inspired by the video game’s iconic progression systems.
- HIGH REPLAYABILITY: Modular scenarios, multiple quest paths, and varied character builds ensure every campaign feels fresh and every journey through Skyrim is different.
Choose it if you prefer discrete missions and reflex-driven fights to open-ended roaming. The listings do not show that its sessions are shorter or lighter than the other two games, so do not assume it is the quick-pickup option.
Honkai: Star Rail: the story-across-worlds pick
PlayStation’s listing describes a space fantasy RPG in which you travel the galaxy on the Astral Express, meet new worlds and companions, and unravel a story. It also marks online play as required. The listing reviewed does not describe the full combat loop or its solo systems in enough detail to compare them with the other two games. Treat it as a premise-led choice rather than a proven “most solo-friendly” one.

“Solo” does not mean offline
All three games are listed on platforms that expect an online connection and an account. Star Rail’s PlayStation listing says online play is required explicitly. For Genshin and Zenless Zone Zero, the listings do not promise offline play, so plan for a connection. HoYoverse’s top-up help article also tells players to select the correct server and account, which underlines that progress is tied to an online account.
Free to play, with optional spending
The PlayStation Store disclosure for Genshin says: “This game includes optional in-game purchases of virtual currency that can be used to acquire a random selection of virtual in-game items.” That is the gacha mechanic: spending is optional, but the items it buys are randomized. Steam labels Zenless Zone Zero as supporting in-app purchases. HoYoverse’s help article, updated August 26, 2025, lists official top-up centers for all three games.

- Decide between roaming and missions. Roaming and puzzles point to Genshin; commissions and combos point to Zenless Zone Zero.
- Check your platform. Genshin is listed for PlayStation and Xbox Series X|S; Zenless Zone Zero for PlayStation and Steam; Star Rail for PlayStation.
- Confirm you will be online. Plan on a connection for any of them.
- Set a spending rule up front, even if it is zero.
A controller is optional. PlayStation names a Genshin Impact Limited Edition DualSense, but nothing says you need one to enjoy solo play.
