If a Galaxy Watch update fails, battery life drops, or the watch disconnects from your phone, start with the least disruptive checks: confirm the Bluetooth and network connection, let an update finish if it is still progressing, and restart the watch only if it is frozen. Update steps and menu labels vary by model, software version, country, and carrier.
Galaxy Watch update failed or appears stuck
Check the connection and start the update
Samsung says a watch update requires a network connection and a Bluetooth connection between the watch and phone. Confirm both are available, then open the Galaxy Wearable app and look for Watch settings (or a settings tab), About watch, and Update watch software. Select Update now or Download updates manually, depending on the labels shown for your model. Follow the prompts. Samsung’s update instructions note that menu wording can vary.

Do not interrupt normal installation progress
The watch may disconnect from the phone while installing an update. Samsung says installation can take several minutes, and the watch may display a progress percentage or an exclamation mark. A temporary Bluetooth disconnect or one of these screens is not, by itself, evidence that the update has failed. Samsung does not give a single timeout that applies to every model, so avoid force-restarting a watch that is visibly progressing.

If the watch is unresponsive rather than showing installation progress, try a forced reboot. Press and hold the Home/Power and Back keys together until Rebooting… appears, then release them. The required hold varies by model; Samsung says some watches may take up to 30 seconds. Once it restarts, check for updates to the watch software, Galaxy Wearable app, and the watch’s device plugin. Samsung’s restart and reset guidance covers the reboot procedure.

Galaxy Watch battery draining fast after an update
Fast drain after an update does not establish that the update caused it. Samsung’s general battery guidance recommends checking apps and settings that can increase power use:
- Install available watch software and app updates. An app bug can use excessive battery.
- Close apps you are not using and lower screen brightness.
- Turn off Always On Display or GPS when you do not need those features.
- Reduce unnecessary notifications.
- Review Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile-network use. Turning off radios can save power, but can also disable features or disconnect the watch from your phone.
Samsung notes that a newly set-up watch can use more battery while apps install and setup completes, and that learning usage patterns may affect performance for about the first week of ownership. Check battery health if the drain remains severe
If the watch is paired with a Samsung phone, Samsung points to Samsung Members diagnostics for checking the watch battery. Samsung says a passed test indicates the battery is in good condition. If the test fails or the drain remains severe, contact Samsung support or service rather than assuming a settings change can fix a failing battery.
Some secondary reporting has described user complaints about substantial drain after software updates and raised Google Play Services as a possible cause. That is a reported possibility, not a Samsung-confirmed diagnosis or proof that a particular watch update caused the problem.

Galaxy Watch keeps disconnecting from phone
Check Bluetooth and the Wearable app
Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both the phone and watch, and check that the watch appears connected in Galaxy Wearable. Bluetooth is required for Samsung’s phone-based update procedure. Turning Bluetooth off disconnects the watch from the phone; Wi-Fi remote connection also will not work if Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are both off.
Reset only after restarting and checking updates
If a restart and software checks do not resolve a persistent connection or app problem, a reset may be a later option. It returns the watch to default settings and can remove data, so back up the watch before proceeding. Samsung’s reset guidance calls for unpairing the watch in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, resetting it, and reconnecting it through Galaxy Wearable; check for software updates after reconnecting. For some LTE watches activated with a carrier QR code, Samsung says you may need a new QR code from your carrier to reactivate service.

When to contact Samsung service
Stop troubleshooting and contact Samsung service if physical damage, such as a stuck button, prevents the watch from restarting, or if the fault remains after the applicable software steps. Use an approved charger and compatible accessories. Charger models differ across watch families and regions: Samsung’s regional support material lists EP-OR900 for Watch5 and Watch6, and EP-OL300 for several newer models, including Watch7 and Watch8. Verify compatibility for your exact watch and region before buying a charger; one charging puck should not be assumed to fit every Galaxy Watch.
Check whether a specific update applies to your watch
Release notes are model- and market-specific. For example, Samsung’s release history for the Galaxy Watch6 SM-R935F lists build R935FXXS2CZF5, released 2026-07-13, with a 2026-07-05 security patch level. Samsung cautions that changes can differ by device, country, and service provider, so this is not a universal latest-version listing.
