SDI is a family of digital video interfaces, not a single resolution or cable type. SD-SDI, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI and 12G-SDI identify different standard or rate classes, but the label alone does not guarantee that two devices will connect. Match the exact video format, mapping, link configuration and device specifications at both ends.
What the SDI labels mean
Serial Digital Interface (SDI) carries digital video between professional video equipment. The names below are useful shorthand for different SDI standard and rate classes; they are not complete compatibility specifications.

These names orient you to a broad interface class, but supported resolution and frame rate also depend on a device’s implementation, sampling and bit depth, signal mapping, and whether it uses a single-, dual- or quad-link configuration. Manufacturer specifications may list multiple standards and link options, so compare the full format line rather than just the headline label. AMD video connectivity documentation

How to check whether two SDI devices are compatible
- Read both format lists. For the source and destination, find the exact SDI standard or rate and the video format: resolution, frame rate, and any specified sampling or bit depth. A shared label such as “3G-SDI” is not enough on its own. AMD video connectivity documentation
- Match mapping and link mode. Where relevant, confirm that both devices support the same 3G Level A or Level B mapping. For multi-link workflows, check whether the equipment expects single-, dual- or quad-link operation and configure both ends accordingly. AMD XAPP1248
- Check any converter in the signal path. Verify its input and output formats, conversion direction and supported link configuration. A converter can bridge interfaces only when it supports the incoming signal and the required output; an adapter cannot make an unsupported format compatible. - Verify the cable for the rate and run. For coax, check the specific cable’s rated performance at your signal rate and intended length. Cable suitability is separate from the SDI signal standard; there is no universal maximum distance that applies to every cable and installation.
- Confirm the physical connection. Check the connector type on each device and use a cable or converter appropriate to those connections. A matching connector does not prove that the signal formats match.
What to check before buying a converter or cable
- For an SDI source and HDMI monitor: look for an SDI-to-HDMI converter that explicitly supports the source’s format and outputs a format the monitor accepts. Confirm the conversion direction; an HDMI-to-SDI unit is not interchangeable.
- For fiber transport: check that the optical converter or module supports the required SDI rate and formats, and is compatible with the equipment at both ends. “12G” by itself is not enough to establish compatibility.
- For coax runs: choose a cable based on its published rating for the signal rate and the planned run length. Because the relevant distance depends on the cable model and installation, do not rely on a generic distance claim.
- For direct monitoring: verify that an SDI monitor accepts the exact format your source outputs, including mapping or link mode where applicable.
Why an SDI connection may fail
- No picture despite a connected cable: compare the source output format with the destination’s supported formats, including frame rate and resolution.
- 3G signal not recognized: check whether one device is set to Level A and the other expects Level B, or vice versa; align their mapping modes if both support the needed mode.
- Multi-link signal is missing or incomplete: verify the single-, dual- or quad-link configuration and that all required connections are present and assigned as specified by the devices.
- Converter does not solve the mismatch: confirm that the converter supports the incoming format and the desired output, and that its direction is correct.
- Problems over a long coax run: check the cable’s published performance rating for the specific rate and length, along with connectors and installation. A universal distance limit cannot be inferred from the SDI label.
SDI is not the same as an always-on YouTube stream
