Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor most people starting desktop live streaming, OBS Studio is the best place to begin: it is free, open source, works on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and gives you control over scenes, sources, audio, and extensions. Choose based on your workflow, though: Streamlabs Desktop may suit creators who want a bundled toolkit, while multi-camera producers should evaluate vMix and Wirecast against their specific show requirements.
What an encoder does
An encoder converts video into a digital format that can be sent as a live stream. Software encoders run on a computer; hardware encoders are standalone devices. YouTube describes encoder streaming as useful for screen sharing and gameplay, external audio and video equipment, and more advanced productions with several cameras and microphones. For a YouTube encoder stream, connect the encoder to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
Encoding software is not the same as a camera, microphone, capture card, or streaming service. It takes the video and audio sources you provide, lets you arrange and process them, then sends the resulting stream to the destination. Your computer must be capable of handling the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and production complexity.
Best encoding software by workflow
OBS Studio: best general-purpose starting point
OBS Studio is free and open source, with versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It lets you combine multiple sources into scenes, add scene transitions and per-source audio filters, preview a production in Studio Mode, use Multiview, and extend the application with an API for plugins and scripts. Those controls make it a strong choice if you are willing to configure your production rather than rely on a more guided creator interface. The OBS Project describes the product and its features at OBS Studio.

OBS is a recommendation for its supported platforms and documented flexibility, not a claim that it creates objectively better video or uses fewer computer resources than alternatives. Its system requirements page cautions that a compatible computer may still be unable to handle a particular workload: CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check current requirements for the release you plan to install at OBS system requirements.
Streamlabs Desktop: consider an integrated creator toolkit
Streamlabs Desktop is built on OBS and, according to YouTube’s encoder directory, bundles creator-oriented tools such as alerts, shortcuts, tipping, face masks, and overlays. Consider it if those integrated features suit your workflow and you prefer that approach to assembling a setup yourself. Check Streamlabs’ current plan details and which features are included before paying. Its requirements guidance also notes that content, other running programs, and advanced overlays or plugins can affect what hardware is adequate. See Streamlabs Desktop system requirements.

vMix and Wirecast: investigate for a complex production
If your show depends on several cameras, microphones, or a more structured production workflow, compare vMix and Wirecast against the actual demands of your production. YouTube lists Wirecast among its software encoders and identifies multi-camera work as an encoder use case. Before choosing either application, confirm its current operating-system support, device limits, inputs, destinations, and price on the vendor’s site. The available product information does not support a reliable feature-by-feature or price comparison here: vMix and Wirecast.
Compare the factors that affect your choice
| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system and computer capacity | Confirm support for your operating system and review the current requirements for the exact software release. OBS lists Windows 10/11, macOS, and Linux in its requirements guidance. | A computer that can install the program is not necessarily powerful enough for your encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. |
| Inputs and production size | Count your cameras, microphones, game consoles, screen sources, and remote contributors. Check how each source will connect to the computer. | A simple screen share or gameplay setup has different production needs from a show with several cameras and microphones. |
| Destination and setup | Confirm that the encoder supports your intended platform and learn that platform’s connection and output requirements. For YouTube, the setup uses a stream URL and key from Live Control Room. | Software features do not replace the platform account access or stream details needed to start broadcasting. |
| Control or convenience | Decide how much control you need over scenes, audio processing, previews, plugins, and stream configuration, versus how integrated or guided you want the interface to feel. | OBS documents extensive production controls; Streamlabs’ YouTube directory listing describes bundled alerts and creator overlays. |
| Total cost | Check current license or subscription terms, along with the cost of any capture hardware, cameras, or microphones your workflow needs. | No current cross-vendor price comparison is established here, so verify each vendor’s current terms before deciding. |
Plan your video and audio equipment
You do not need a capture card for every stream. It can be useful when you need to bring an HDMI camera or console into a computer-based production, but it does not replace the encoder application. Match a card to the source and the resolution and frame rate you intend to use, as well as your computer’s connections and capabilities.

YouTube gives an external microphone, webcam, and headphones as examples of typical equipment for gaming and casual streams. A more involved setup may use multiple microphones and cameras, mixers, or a hardware encoder. Choose equipment to solve a real input or production need rather than treating every accessory as mandatory.
Start a YouTube stream with an encoder
- Choose the production workflow. Decide whether you are streaming a screen or game, using external audio or video equipment, or producing a multi-camera show. Install an encoder that supports your operating system and can handle the workload you expect.
- Prepare the inputs. Connect the sources your show needs, such as a microphone, webcam, screen capture, or camera routed through an appropriate capture device. Arrange the sources and audio in the encoder; in OBS, production elements are organized into scenes.
- Create or open the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Enter the connection details in the encoder. Follow the encoder’s YouTube setup flow and supply the stream URL and key where requested. Use YouTube’s current encoder guide for platform-specific setup details: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Check the production before going live. Verify that the intended video and audio sources are active and that the stream is connected to the correct YouTube broadcast. For a production with scene changes, preview the next scene before switching if your software provides that control.
Copyright and channel eligibility still apply
An encoder only sends a stream; it does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material you broadcast, nor does it determine whether your channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming requirements. Use content you have permission to stream and check YouTube’s current rules in Live Control Room and its help documentation. Do not assume that a looping or prerecorded video avoids copyright obligations or other channel policies.

Troubleshoot before changing software
- The stream will not connect: Check that you copied the stream URL and key for the intended YouTube broadcast, entered them in the correct encoder fields, and are using the relevant account and live-stream setup. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- The computer struggles during the show: Reduce the workload by simplifying scenes or closing unnecessary applications, then reassess your resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings against your hardware. OBS notes that performance depends on all of these factors; a software change alone is not a guaranteed fix.
- A camera or console is missing: Check the source connection and whether the device requires a compatible capture device. A capture card is only relevant when needed to bring an external HDMI source into the computer.
- The production is difficult to manage: Recount the sources and operator tasks. A simple workflow may be easier to maintain in OBS; bundled creator features may suit some Streamlabs users; a multi-camera show is a reason to compare production-focused candidates by their current vendor specifications.
- You are unsure what a tool includes: Verify its current version, supported platform, feature availability, and licensing terms directly with the vendor. Requirements and plans can change, and the available details do not establish a universal best choice for every setup.
