One terminology note: ScreenshotMachine’s documentation describes an HTTP API used with curl; it does not establish a separate standalone “ScreenshotMachine CLI” executable. Screenshot Machine’s API documentation and Selenium’s WebDriver documentation describe different automation models, not a head-to-head benchmark.
What “ScreenshotMachine CLI” means in practice
If by “CLI” you mean taking screenshots from a terminal, ScreenshotMachine documents a shell-friendly route: send an HTTP GET request to its hosted screenshot API with a URL, your customer key, and any capture options, then save the response. That makes it convenient to call from Bash, a scheduled job, or a CI script without setting up a local browser session. It still requires an API credential and network access.

The basic pattern is to request a capture and write the returned image to a file. Use your own customer key and URL, and consult the API documentation for the exact supported parameter names and values.

You can pass documented capture options in the request, including output dimensions, full-page dimensions, device presets, JPG/PNG/GIF output, delay, cache controls, cookies, click or hide selectors, element selection, and crop options. Which combination works depends on the page and the options supported by the API.
Automate repeated captures safely
- Keep the customer key out of source control. Inject it through an environment variable or your CI secret store.
- URL-encode the target URL and other values that may contain reserved characters; curl’s
--data-urlencodehandles that for the example above. - Choose an output path and format intentionally. A file extension does not itself guarantee that the API returned the matching image format; set the documented output option if needed.
- Check the HTTP result and the saved file in your script. A request that completes is not proof that the target rendered as expected.
- For scheduled or bulk jobs, account for service availability, network failures, and the plan’s monthly fresh-screenshot allowance.
How Selenium screenshot automation works
Selenium takes a screenshot through a WebDriver-controlled browser session. The sequence is to start a driver, navigate to the target, wait for the relevant page state, and call the screenshot method provided by your language binding. For an element screenshot, locate the element first and capture that element rather than the whole browser context. Selenium’s documentation covers WebDriver windows and tabs at selenium.dev.
Unlike a single hosted API request, Selenium needs a working browser automation setup: a Selenium binding, a compatible browser and driver arrangement, and the runtime environment to launch or connect to that browser. The payoff is direct browser control. Your script can perform steps before capture and take the screenshot at the exact point in a test or workflow.

Choose Selenium when the screenshot follows browser actions
- The page requires clicks, form entry, authentication, or navigation through multiple states.
- You need to capture an element after locating it in the DOM.
- The screenshot is evidence from an automated browser test and belongs with the test’s other outputs.
- You need control over a browser session rather than a hosted service that renders a URL for you.
For a simple URL-to-image task, Selenium adds browser-session setup that a curl request does not require. For a page workflow, that setup is useful rather than overhead.

Troubleshooting common automation failures
The shell request fails or saves an error response
Check that the customer key and endpoint are correct, the target URL is encoded properly, and the machine can reach the hosted API. Inspect the HTTP status and response before treating the output file as an image. Confirm option names and accepted values in the API documentation.

The capture is blank or incomplete
Some pages need more time to render or load images. Try an appropriate documented delay, full-page dimensions, or the relevant capture options. For a page that requires a sequence of interactions, an API option may not substitute for the browser workflow; use Selenium if the actions cannot be expressed by the supported API parameters.
Selenium cannot start the browser
Verify that the Selenium binding, browser, and driver arrangement are compatible in the environment running the script, and that the process has permission and resources to launch a browser. If the capture is part of CI, diagnose the browser-session failure separately from the page’s rendering behavior.
The screenshot misses a control or element
Wait for the page state that makes the target available, then locate the element before capturing. In ScreenshotMachine, check the selector and confirm the API’s element-capture behavior for the target page. In Selenium, make sure the element lookup succeeds in the active browser context before calling its screenshot method.
