One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchScreenshotMachine’s documented command-line workflow is a Bash script that calls its hosted screenshot API with curl; the official materials reviewed do not establish a separate CLI application to install. You need a customer key, set the capture options, and save the HTTP response to a file. The available controls are useful, but published settings alone do not prove image quality, rendering fidelity, or speed.
Does ScreenshotMachine have a CLI?
ScreenshotMachine documents an HTTP GET screenshot API and a Bash example that submits a request and writes the response to output.png. Its maintained Bash repository is described as an example for calling the API, not as a separately installed command-line binary. See ScreenshotMachine’s API documentation and its Bash example.
In practical terms, “ScreenshotMachine CLI” means using a shell and curl to call the hosted service. This is a documentation-based walkthrough; it is not a report of an independent installation or hands-on image-quality test.
Set up a first capture with Bash and curl
1. Get your customer key
Create or access a ScreenshotMachine account and retrieve the customer key. The API requires this key. Keep it private; do not publish it in a script or page that other people can view.

2. Configure and run the request
The vendor’s example uses Bash and curl, sends the URL and screenshot settings as URL-encoded form data, and redirects the response into a local image file. Use the supplied example as the starting point, replacing its placeholders with your key, target URL, and desired settings. Do not put a real key or secret phrase in shared code.
For calls from publicly available HTML pages, ScreenshotMachine recommends a secret phrase and a corresponding hash. According to its documentation, if a phrase is configured but the hash is missing or incorrect, the request is ignored. Follow the vendor’s documented signing method rather than exposing credentials in public markup.
3. Decide whether to use cached output
The cacheLimit setting controls the age of an acceptable cached capture in days. Set cacheLimit=0 when you want to avoid using a cached capture, subject to the service’s current behavior. A cache setting is a freshness choice, not a guarantee that a page has finished loading or that its content is accurate.

What can you control in the screenshot?
ScreenshotMachine’s API documentation describes these capture controls. They affect the requested output; their availability is not evidence of measured fidelity or consistently high-quality results.

| Control | Documented options and limits | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport and page coverage | Width 100–1920 pixels; height 100–9999 pixels, or full for a full-length page. |
Use fixed dimensions to capture a particular viewport, or full height to request the entire page. |
| Device mode | Desktop, phone, or tablet. | Choose a device mode when you want a device-oriented capture rather than only specifying dimensions. |
| File format | JPG, PNG, or GIF. | Select the format that suits your downstream use; format support does not establish comparative visual quality. |
| Delay | 0–10,000 milliseconds in listed increments. | Allow additional time for images, animations, or other page content to appear before capture. |
| Zoom | 10–400%. | Adjust scale where supported. The docs say zoom is ignored for screenshots smaller than typical device dimensions. |
| Cache age | 0–14 days; zero means do not use cache. | Balance reuse of a cached capture against requesting a fresh one. |
| Page interaction and cleanup | CSS selectors can be used to click or hide page elements. | Interact with a selected control or hide an element such as a cookie banner before capture. |
Output quality: what the documentation does and does not establish
The documented endpoint returns an image response that the Bash example saves locally. The API offers multiple formats, viewport and device settings, timing controls, and selector-based interactions. Those options describe how to configure a capture, not how accurately it renders any particular site.
The reviewed primary materials provide no image-quality scores, independent comparisons, or performance benchmarks. They therefore do not support a claim that ScreenshotMachine produces consistently faithful captures, nor a measured comparison with another service. If output quality is decisive, capture representative pages and inspect the actual files in your own workflow.

Important limits and request details
- Dimensions: the documented width range is 100–1920 pixels and the height range is 100–9999 pixels;
fullis also accepted for full-page height. - Delay: the listed range is 0–10,000 milliseconds. ScreenshotMachine advises allowing a longer delay for long pages with more images or animations; the setting is not a guarantee that every page element will load.
- Zoom: the documented range is 10–400%, but the documentation says zoom is ignored for screenshots smaller than typical device dimensions.
- Cache: cache age is specified in days, from 0 to 14; zero means do not use cache.
- Encoding: URL-encode request values. The documentation specifically calls out reserved characters in CSS selectors, such as
#, which must be encoded correctly. - Authentication: a customer key is required. For public-page requests using a configured secret phrase, the matching hash is required or the request is ignored.
Common problems and fixes
The script saves an error response instead of an image
Check that the customer key is present and valid, and verify the request parameters against the API documentation. If a secret phrase is configured, confirm that the corresponding hash is included and correct. The documented sources do not specify every possible HTTP error response, so inspect the response and current vendor documentation rather than assuming every saved file is a valid capture.
A selector does not click or hide the intended element
Check that the selector matches the page element and percent-encode reserved characters, especially #. A malformed or unencoded selector can change how the request is interpreted.

Increase the delay within the documented range and compare the resulting capture. ScreenshotMachine specifically recommends a greater delay for full-length pages with more images or animations. A longer wait can increase capture time and still cannot guarantee that a slow or dynamically changing page will settle exactly as expected.

Zoom appears to have no effect
Check whether the requested screenshot is smaller than typical device dimensions; the documentation says zoom is ignored in that case. Adjust the viewport dimensions if appropriate.
The output shows an older page state
Review the cache age setting. Set cacheLimit=0 to request that cache not be used, and verify the current service behavior if freshness is critical.
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
The available documentation establishes configurable request behavior, not service uptime, capture success rates, or comparative speed. Longer delays add waiting time, while full-page captures may require more time for pages with numerous images or animations. For a production workflow, handle failed responses, validate that the returned file is usable, and test the pages and dimensions your application actually needs.

For an alternative, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes known consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the same API also offers controls such as full-page capture, device presets, CSS selectors, delays, caching, and async jobs. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents.
Here is a cURL example, using ScreenshotNeo’s documentation for API details:
