Install and run a complete example
Install Node.js, then install Puppeteer in a project. The standard package downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing build and a chrome-headless-shell binary during installation.

For pages that keep network connections open, such as those using analytics or live updates, a network-idle condition can wait too long; choose a suitable navigation wait condition or wait explicitly for the content you need.

Browser installation and managed-browser alternatives
The Puppeteer installation guide, whose current version was shown as 25.12.0 when reviewed, estimates browser download sizes at approximately 170 MB for macOS, 282 MB for Linux, and 280 MB for Windows. These are download estimates, not total installed-footprint measurements.
puppeteer-core does not download Chrome. It is intended for setups where you manage the browser yourself or connect to a remote browser. The separate @puppeteer/browsers package provides CLI and programmatic browser management, but managing a browser binary does not by itself implement a screenshot workflow.

Choose Screenshot Machine when
- You want to send a request and receive an image without operating a browser runtime yourself.
- The documented capture parameters cover your needs, including device dimensions, full-page output, cookies, selectors, or crop settings.
- You prefer a published service allowance and price to estimating the infrastructure and upkeep of browser workers.
Choose Puppeteer when
- You need programmable navigation or browser interaction beyond the service’s documented capture controls.
- Your screenshot step belongs inside an existing JavaScript automation project.

Validate before scaling
For a high-volume or business-critical workflow, test representative target sites before committing. Compare capture fidelity, failure handling, latency, throughput, and total cost for your own pages and environment; published documentation alone cannot decide those outcomes.

Troubleshooting common failures
Screenshot Machine returns an error instead of an image
Check X-Screenshotmachine-Response rather than assuming the response body is a screenshot. Documented errors include invalid key, missing URL, invalid URL, exhausted credits, invalid selector, and invalid crop. Correct the associated request value, verify account usage, and retry only after addressing the error.
Puppeteer cannot find or launch its browser
The standard puppeteer install depends on installation scripts to download browser binaries. Some package managers or build environments block dependency scripts; permit the required install step or install a compatible browser manually. If you deliberately manage Chrome separately, use puppeteer-core and configure the browser connection as appropriate.
Capture is blank, incomplete, or missing dynamic content
- Confirm the page navigation succeeded and the target URL is reachable from the capture environment.
- Wait for a meaningful selector or page state when content is rendered asynchronously; a fixed delay is not a guarantee that content has loaded.
- Check cookies, user agent, language, and viewport when the page changes its output based on visitor state or device.
- Review whether the requested full-page, clip, selector, or crop settings match the intended framing.
