If ScreenshotAPI.net times out on a slow page, first confirm that the error is a render timeout—not an authentication, quota, rate-limit, invalid-URL, or blocked-destination response. Then match the wait condition to the content you need, check whether delayed content needs a selector wait or short delay, and reduce full-page lazy-load work if it is pushing the render past its deadline.
1. Confirm that the failure is really a timeout
Read the response status and error before changing render settings. A slow-page timeout is different from an authentication problem, exhausted quota, rate limit, invalid URL, or a destination that blocks the request. Use ScreenshotAPI.net’s API response documentation and help page to interpret the response and check account usage; verify current plan limits in your account because service terms can change.

Record the request parameters and reproduce the failure with the same URL and settings. If the response identifies an account or request issue, changing the page’s wait settings will not fix it. If it is a repeatable render-time failure for one page, continue with the loading settings.

2. Check the timeout value and its units
ScreenshotAPI.net’s lazy-loading documentation describes timeout as the maximum time the API waits for a page to load before aborting. That guide gives a default of 100000 ms and warns that a value set too low can fail before the page loads. Treat that number as documentation for the endpoint/version covered by the guide, not a universal limit: check the reference for the exact API version and request endpoint you use before copying its units, default, or allowed range.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Increase the timeout only when the page genuinely needs more time. A larger value can allow a slow but necessary render to finish; it does not make the page load faster, and excessive waiting can increase the time each request occupies your workflow. First remove unnecessary waits and full-page work, then raise the deadline if the remaining render still needs it.
3. Choose a wait condition that fits the page
| Wait condition | When it helps | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
domcontentloaded |
Use when the document structure is enough for the screenshot and you want to start capture earlier. | It is earlier and faster, but images, stylesheets, and other resources may still be unfinished. |
load |
Use when the screenshot depends on page resources finishing their load. | It waits longer than domcontentloaded. |
networkidle |
Use when meaningful content arrives through asynchronous requests and a quieter network is a better readiness signal. | Waiting for network activity to settle can take longer; it is not automatically the best choice for every page. |
These event behaviors are described in ScreenshotAPI.net’s lazy-loading guide. Choose the earliest condition that reliably includes the content you need. For example, a static page may be usable at DOM readiness, while an asynchronously populated dashboard may need a later readiness signal.

4. Handle content that appears after the load event
A page can satisfy its chosen load event before an animation, chart, client-side widget, or delayed script has produced the element you want to capture. If the API supports waiting for a selector, prefer a reliable page element that signals readiness; this targets the actual content rather than adding an arbitrary pause. ScreenshotAPI.net’s API documentation describes the available request options, including how to configure waits for the endpoint in use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf there is no dependable selector, add a measured delay after the load condition. Start with only the time the specific page needs, then check that the target content appears. A fixed delay adds directly to render time, so increasing it indiscriminately can create more timeout failures rather than solve them.

5. Reduce work on long, lazy-loaded pages
Full-page capture can involve more than waiting for the initial viewport. When lazy_load is enabled, the service may scroll through the page to trigger off-screen content. Each scroll step and its scroll_delay adds work. ScreenshotAPI.net warns that a high scroll delay on a long page can push rendering beyond the configured timeout in its lazy-loading documentation.
- If only the visible viewport matters, turn off
lazy_loadto avoid scrolling work. - If off-screen lazy content is required, retain full-page loading but use a moderate scroll delay rather than a large one.
- Do not combine a long fixed delay, a slow wait condition, and large scroll delays unless the page needs all three.
Use the endpoint’s current documentation for exact parameter names and accepted values; similarly named screenshot APIs may use different settings.

6. Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Timeout happens before the page appears | The timeout may be too low for the destination, or the selected wait condition may require more time than expected. | Check the exact endpoint’s timeout units and default, then raise the timeout only as needed or try an earlier event if the screenshot does not require every resource. |
| Page frame is captured, but a chart or widget is missing | The content may load after the selected event. | Wait for a reliable selector; if none exists, add a short, measured delay. |
| Long pages fail while short pages work | Full-page lazy loading and scroll delays may be extending the render. | Disable lazy_load for viewport-only shots. For full-page shots, reduce unnecessary scroll delay. |
| Changing wait settings has no effect | The response may be an authentication, quota, rate-limit, invalid-URL, or blocked-destination error rather than a render timeout. | Inspect the exact response and account usage; use the vendor’s current documentation and help page to identify the relevant account or request condition. |
| Only one destination fails repeatedly | The page may be unusually slow, rely on delayed or asynchronous content, or block the capture request. | Compare the response for that URL with a known-working request, then adjust readiness and lazy-load settings only if the response indicates a render failure. |
7. Account for quota and rate limits separately
Quota exhaustion and rate limiting are account/API conditions, not evidence that a page needs a longer render timeout. ScreenshotAPI.net’s help page says failed screenshots do not count against usage. Check the current response and account usage rather than assuming a failed render consumed a shot; confirm plan-specific limits in the account because they can change.

For an alternative screenshot API, try ScreenshotNeo first: cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status, so bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are not billed; cache hits are not billed either. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
One GET request can return a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
