Enable live streaming on your channel, copy its stream key from YouTube Studio, configure and test OBS, then leave the desktop, power and internet connection running. OBS’s automatic reconnect can help after some connection drops, but it does not make a desktop setup fail-proof: crashes, reboots, power loss and copyright enforcement can still interrupt the broadcast.
What a Linux desktop setup can—and cannot—do
OBS Studio is a practical graphical encoder for relaying a podcast on Linux. It lets you assemble a scene, choose audio inputs, preview the output and send it to YouTube. For a prepared podcast, that usually means routing the program audio into OBS and pairing it with static artwork or another suitable visual. Add a microphone only if you also plan to speak live.

A desktop broadcast is dependent on the desktop. OBS must be running, the computer must stay powered on, and the network connection must remain usable. OBS has an automatic reconnect option for some connection interruptions, but a reconnect feature is not a guarantee of continuous uptime and does not by itself reopen OBS after a crash or restart the machine after a power failure.
Check YouTube eligibility before setting up OBS
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days; its current help guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch rather than waiting until the last minute. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

For encoder streaming, create or reuse a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. You will need the ingest server URL and stream key to connect OBS. Treat the key as a secret: YouTube describes stream keys as being like the stream’s password and address. Do not publish it, show it on screen or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream settings guidance.
Install OBS Studio on Linux
Use the installation route recommended by OBS for your distribution. OBS recommends Flathub for Linux distributions other than Ubuntu and provides a PPA-based installation route for Ubuntu. Follow the current instructions at OBS Studio downloads rather than copying commands from an unrelated distribution guide.
OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland for Linux/Unix. Those are baseline requirements, not proof that a particular computer can encode your chosen resolution and scene smoothly. OBS cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording with OBS. Check the machine with the actual audio, visual and output settings you intend to use; see OBS system requirements.

Configure the podcast scene and YouTube connection
- Prepare the program audio. Make the podcast audio available as an OBS audio input. Choose a reliable playback or capture path on your Linux desktop and confirm that its level appears in OBS’s audio mixer. If the show includes live introductions or commentary, add and test a microphone input separately.
- Add a visual source. Add suitable static artwork or another visual source to the scene so the live feed has a picture alongside the audio. Use artwork you have the right to display. Preview the scene and confirm the image is framed as intended.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if it is available in the service list, or choose a custom streaming service and enter the YouTube server URL. Enter the stream key, then save the settings.
- Check audio and scene behavior. Listen to the OBS monitoring or make a private test stream, if available to your account, and verify that the program audio is audible, not clipped, and does not unexpectedly stop between files. Check that the artwork remains visible throughout the intended broadcast.
OBS’s overview of sources, scenes and audio inputs is in the OBS overview. YouTube’s encoder walkthrough is at YouTube Help.
Choose encoder settings for your connection
YouTube’s published guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes not exceeding four seconds. Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations for the selected resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream. The right setting depends on the output format and the upload connection you have tested.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP ingest option. In OBS, use the YouTube service or the secure server URL supplied in the Live Control Room. Before a long run, test the stream at the planned resolution and bitrate while playing audio and visual material representative of the real show. Watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, and make sure your sustained upload capacity has headroom rather than merely matching the selected bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations and YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Enable reconnect, then plan for failures OBS cannot fix
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and review the network section’s Automatically Reconnect option. Enable it and test what happens when the network briefly drops. The option can help OBS re-establish a connection in some cases; it does not establish that the desktop will recover from every failure or resume unattended after an operating-system restart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor an always-on desktop broadcast, decide who or what will notice and respond to these events:
- OBS exits or the computer reboots: confirm how OBS will be started again and who will check the broadcast. The sources cited here do not establish a universal Linux startup-at-boot recipe or a tested service configuration for every distribution.
- Internet or router outage: test reconnect behavior and verify the stream in YouTube after connectivity returns. OBS reconnect cannot repair a prolonged loss of internet service.
- Power failure: a desktop stream stops when the computer loses power. A UPS may reduce the risk from brief outages, but choosing capacity requires knowing the equipment load and the runtime needed.
- Audio or playlist interruption: check that the selected audio source remains available and that playback does not pause, end or change devices unexpectedly.
- YouTube interruption or copyright action: inspect YouTube’s stream-health status and any notices in Studio; a healthy encoder connection does not override platform enforcement.
For full unattended operation, test the failure modes that matter to your setup instead of treating an encoder reconnect switch as an uptime plan.

Know what happens to the live archive
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream that exceeds 12 hours will produce one complete replay. If you need a full recording, plan a separate local recording workflow and confirm that the computer has enough storage for the entire run. YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance explains the limit.
Clear rights before broadcasting a podcast continuously
Being able to play a track in a podcast does not necessarily mean you have the rights to retransmit it in a continuous YouTube live stream or keep it in the archived replay. YouTube requires the broadcaster to hold the necessary rights for live and archived material, including applicable music licensing rights.
