To use Argos CI with a private GitHub repository, authorize Argos with the GitHub account that can access the repository, include that repository in the GitHub App installation, add it to the right Argos project, then run visual tests and upload their screenshots from GitHub Actions. The published setup uses an ARGOS_TOKEN secret; Argos also announced a GitHub OIDC option in May 2026 for supported workflows.
Connect the private repository to Argos
- Sign in to Argos using GitHub and authorize the integration.
- In the Argos dashboard, add the repository you want to test. Use the Argos project associated with that repository so later uploads and pull-request results appear in the right place.
- On GitHub’s App installation screen, choose the account or organization that owns the repository. If the installation is limited to selected repositories, ensure the private repository is selected before confirming.
- Review the permissions requested on the live installation screen. GitHub recommends granting apps only the permissions they need, but its general guidance does not establish Argos’s current permission list. Follow the current Argos installation request rather than assuming a particular scope. GitHub: Choosing permissions for a GitHub App; GitHub: Authorizing GitHub Apps.
Repository access follows the installation’s scope: if the installing account did not grant the app access to the private repository, adding or configuring a workflow alone will not connect it. Organization approval requirements may also affect who can install or authorize an app.

Add Argos to your GitHub Actions workflow
Argos’s published example is for Storybook. It triggers on pushes to main and pull requests, builds and serves Storybook, runs tests, and uploads screenshots. Adapt its install, build, and test commands to your existing project; a repository that does not use Storybook should retain its own browser-test setup and use the Argos upload integration supported by that setup. See the Argos Storybook and GitHub Actions guide for the complete product-specific example.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe essential workflow shape is: check out the code, install dependencies and browser support, build or start the app under test, run the visual tests with Argos upload authentication available, and inspect the resulting check or report on the pull request. The commands below are an illustrative GitHub Actions skeleton, not a drop-in replacement for the package scripts and action versions in Argos’s live guide. Replace the build and test commands with those your repository uses.

Choose upload authentication: token secret or GitHub OIDC
Use the documented ARGOS_TOKEN secret
The Argos setup guide stores an Argos token as a GitHub Actions repository secret. Create or copy the token from the appropriate Argos project settings, then in GitHub open the repository’s Settings → Secrets and variables → Actions, choose New repository secret, name it ARGOS_TOKEN, and paste the token value. Reference it in the workflow as ${{ secrets.ARGOS_TOKEN }}; do not commit the token in workflow YAML or application code.

Use OIDC where your Argos project supports it
Argos announced GitHub OIDC upload authentication on May 11, 2026. Its documented flow is to enable OIDC in Argos project settings, grant the job id-token: write, and remove ARGOS_TOKEN from supported runs. For example, the job permissions need to include:
Recommended Free Tools
permissions:
contents: read
id-token: write
Use the current Argos project settings and OIDC authentication instructions to confirm support and configuration for the workflow you run. OIDC avoids keeping a reusable upload token in that job; it is not safe to infer that every event, private-fork arrangement, or organization policy is supported identically.

- Your Personal Streaming Server - Build your own Netflix-style media library and stream 4K movies, shows and photos to any device without monthly fees
- Create Your Own Cloud - Store your entire photo, video and music collection; access from anywhere with fast 282 MB/s transfer speeds
- Creator-Grade Backup Solution - Protect your irreplaceable content with automated backups to cloud services, external drives and remote NAS
- Multi-Layered Data Protection - Combine RAID redundancy, automated backups and snapshot technology to prevent data loss from any cause
- Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring
Argos says its tokenless fallback can cover forked pull requests and public repositories when OIDC is unavailable, after it verifies repository, commit, branch, and workflow run through GitHub’s API. Treat that as the documented behavior for the described cases, not a guarantee for every private repository or event combination. Verify your actual internal PR, fork PR, and push workflows under your organization’s policies.
Verify that private pull requests produce results
- Open a pull request in the connected repository and confirm the Actions workflow completes.
- Check the Argos project linked to the repository for the uploaded screenshots and visual-change report.
- If no result appears, check the run’s logs for a missing or invalid token, failed build/test command, or upload step that did not execute.
- Confirm the GitHub App installation still includes the repository and that the workflow is configured for the event that actually ran.
Argos describes pull-request visual-change reporting as the intended outcome of its example workflow. The precise check presentation and event behavior can depend on current product configuration.

Common setup problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Private repository is missing in Argos | The app installation was made under another account, or the repository was not selected in a selected-repositories installation. | Check the installing account and update the GitHub App installation scope to include the repository. |
| Upload is rejected or unauthenticated | ARGOS_TOKEN is absent, mistyped, unavailable to the job, or the chosen authentication mode does not match Argos project settings. |
For token auth, confirm the repository secret name and reference. For OIDC, confirm OIDC is enabled and the job has id-token: write. |
| Workflow passes but no screenshots appear | The test command may not perform an Argos upload, or the build/test step may target the wrong app or project. | Compare the package setup and upload command with Argos’s guide; inspect logs for the upload step and confirm the correct Argos project. |
| Internal pull request works but a fork pull request does not | Fork workflows and secret availability have different security constraints, and OIDC/event support is not established for every configuration. | Check Argos’s current OIDC guidance and your GitHub organization policy for that exact event; do not expose a long-lived secret to untrusted fork code. |
| Installation asks for permissions you did not expect | The current app configuration determines requested scopes; generic GitHub guidance does not specify Argos’s exact list. | Inspect the live request and consult Argos documentation or support if a requested scope is unclear before approving it. |
Plan and access considerations
Argos’s pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists a Hobby plan with up to 5,000 screenshots and GitHub integration, and Pro starting at $100 per month with usage-based billing and 35,000 screenshots included. The pricing page does not establish that every private-repository feature or configuration is available on Hobby, so confirm the current entitlement for your use case before relying on it. Pricing can change; consult Argos pricing. The GitHub Marketplace presents plans differently, so do not combine its presentation with the Argos pricing page’s figures: Argos on GitHub Marketplace.
Or skip the browser setup
Argos CI is for automated visual regression checks in a test workflow. If your immediate need is a clean website capture rather than adding visual tests to a private repository, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; its API uses the following cURL pattern. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and authentication details.
