How to Fix Argos CI Screenshots That Differ Between Local and CI Runs

Local and CI screenshot diffs often come from unstable page state or different rendering environments. Diagnose the pattern, stabilize capture, and keep baselines in one pinned environment.

If Argos CI screenshots pass locally but differ in CI, first make the page state deterministic, then capture baselines and CI screenshots in the same pinned OS, browser, and Playwright environment. A pixel diff proves that pixels changed—not that the product regressed. Avoid masking unexplained differences with a broad global threshold.

Why local and CI screenshots differ

Visual diffs can come from the page or from the machine rendering it. Common sources of unstable page state include fonts that load late or fail, images that have not decoded, lazy-loaded content, animation, live API data, timestamps, random values, and records returned in an inconsistent order. Even identical page content can render differently across macOS and Linux because of font rasterization, anti-aliasing, GPU paths, and scrollbar or viewport behavior. Argos’s guide to flaky visual tests discusses these sources; its CI guide recommends using a consistent capture environment.

Diagnose the diff before changing thresholds

Start with the shape of the difference. This is a diagnostic aid, not a guarantee: a single screenshot can contain more than one cause.

  • Text wraps differently or looks heavier: check font delivery, font readiness, browser version, and OS rendering.
  • An image is blank, missing, or different: check whether it loaded and decoded, whether it is lazy-loaded, and whether its URL returns consistent content.
  • Transient banners or widgets appear in only one run: control third-party responses or hide only the known uncontrolled region.
  • Rows, labels, or timestamps change: stabilize API fixtures, ordering, randomness, and the clock.
  • Most edges show faint pixel noise: investigate OS, browser, GPU, and anti-aliasing differences before considering a narrowly scoped tolerance.
  • Layout width or scroll position differs: pin viewport and device scale factor, then check scrollbar behavior and capture timing.

Make the page deterministic before capture

Wait for fonts and images

Confirm the same web fonts load in both environments, including the absence of CI-only 404s. Wait for document.fonts.ready before capturing. For images, wait for loading and decoding; trigger lazy-loaded images by scrolling or use a deliberate application-specific method to load them before the screenshot.

Stop motion and transient UI

Disable CSS transitions and animations and hide the blinking text caret. If animation is driven by JavaScript or canvas, pause or control it in the application as well; disabling CSS alone does not stop those sources. Make loaders and application state explicit so capture does not occur midway through a transition.

Control data and time

Replace live API responses and uncontrolled third-party content with deterministic fixtures where practical. Seed random values, freeze time when timestamps matter, and make list queries use stable ordering. If a region cannot be made deterministic, isolate that specific region rather than weakening comparison for the whole page.

Pin the capture dimensions

Use the same viewport and device scale factor in local runs and CI. A changed viewport can alter line wrapping, responsive breakpoints, and page height even when the browser and content are otherwise identical.

Use one canonical Playwright environment

For committed baselines, use the same OS, browser binary, Playwright version, and relevant dependencies for baseline generation and CI. Argos’s visual regression CI guide shows using an official Playwright Docker image pinned to the matching Playwright version. Generate or update snapshots inside that image or in CI rather than mixing laptop-generated and CI-generated baselines. Argos co-founder and CEO Greg Bergé summarized the practice in an August 4, 2026 guide: “Always generate screenshots in CI (or in the same Docker image everywhere), never mix local and CI baselines.”

If text rendering remains inconsistent across macOS and CI, Argos’s Playwright quickstart demonstrates Chromium launch flags --disable-lcd-text and --font-render-hinting=none. Treat these as environment-specific options, not a substitute for matching the browser and checking font delivery.

Set up Argos with Playwright

The Argos quickstart uses @argos-ci/playwright, its reporter, and argosScreenshot. Add the reporter to your Playwright configuration, upload screenshots in CI, and provide ARGOS_TOKEN in the CI environment. The following shows the core setup pattern; check the official quickstart for current package and reporter syntax before adopting it.

In a test, capture a named screenshot with the Argos helper:

import { test } from '@playwright/test';
import { argosScreenshot } from '@argos-ci/playwright';

test('homepage visual check', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await argosScreenshot(page, 'homepage');
});

Install dependencies and Chromium in CI using the versions appropriate to your project; the quickstart’s example uses npm ci and npx playwright install --with-deps chromium. Its action and image version numbers are examples, so check current releases rather than copying an old pin. GitHub Actions can also use OIDC/tokenless authentication according to the quickstart. A default-branch build must upload at least one baseline before pull request builds can compare against it; otherwise, Argos says those pull requests remain orphaned.

The Argos helper is documented as waiting for fonts, decoded images, and network idle; waiting for [aria-busy] loaders to disappear; hiding carets and scrollbars; and pausing CSS animations. Verify these behaviors against the version installed in your project. They improve capture readiness but cannot make live data, application-controlled animation, or an inconsistent rendering environment deterministic by themselves.

Use Playwright’s native snapshots or hosted visual review

For a small suite, Playwright’s native toHaveScreenshot can compare against committed PNG baselines. Keep baseline creation and updates in the same Docker environment as CI. The practical trade-offs are rendering parity, baseline storage and update effort, review workflow, repository size, and whether local snapshots or hosted review better fit the team. Argos uploads screenshots captured in the real test browser for diffing and review; it is optional and does not remove the need to stabilize page state.

Tune comparison tolerance only for understood residual noise

Keep comparison strict for ordinary page content. If a canvas, map, or residual anti-aliasing creates known noise, tune only the affected screenshot and confirm that meaningful text and layout changes still fail. Argos documents a default threshold of 0.5 and a configurable range from 0 to 1 for its product; check the current documentation and the meaning of the setting before changing it. A broad threshold may suppress a genuine regression, so do not raise it simply to silence an unexplained diff. Greg Bergé’s August 4, 2026 guide puts the sequence this way: “Stabilize the page first, capture in one canonical environment, then apply tolerance surgically per screenshot rather than globally.”

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
CI text wraps or weighs differently Font failed to load, capture began before fonts were ready, or rendering environments differ Check font requests and CI 404s; wait for document.fonts.ready; align OS, browser, and Playwright version.
Images appear blank or inconsistent Lazy loading, unfinished decode, or unstable remote asset Trigger lazy loads; wait for images to decode; use stable fixtures for variable assets.
Screenshot contains half-loaded content Capture ran while a loader or transition was active Wait for a page-specific ready condition; check loader state and the installed helper’s readiness behavior.
Rows or dates move between runs Live data, unstable ordering, random values, or current time Mock responses, sort deterministically, seed randomness, and freeze the clock where relevant.
Many thin edge differences appear OS, browser, GPU, font rasterization, or anti-aliasing variation Run both captures in the same pinned Playwright image; consider the documented Chromium text flags; apply only a scoped tolerance if the remaining noise is understood.
Pull request has no usable comparison No default-branch build has uploaded a baseline Run the default branch through the upload configuration, then rerun the pull request comparison.
Retries pass but screenshots still vary Retries are masking timing variation, not fixing its cause Make page readiness, data, and rendering deterministic; use traces and failure screenshots to inspect functional failures, not as a stability fix.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot outside a Playwright visual-baseline workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. This cURL example requests a WebP capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. Its capture can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before taking the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

ScreenshotNeo is not a replacement for deterministic Playwright baselines when you need to compare your application’s test-browser renders. For general screenshot capture, it includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
