Marketers have already tried to use dream-incubation techniques to associate a brand with dream imagery. The clearest example was a Molson Coors campaign ahead of Super Bowl LV. But that is not the same as proving advertisers can reliably place products in dreams or change what people buy: the researchers who raised the alarm said that kind of influence at scale was not established.
What “injecting ads into dreams” actually means
The term used by researchers is targeted dream incubation (TDI): presenting a cue before or during sleep in the hope of influencing dream content. It does not mean inserting a precise video commercial into a sleeping person’s mind. A cue might be a sound, odor, image, or prompt associated with a theme; whether it appears in a dream, and what the dreamer makes of it, are not fully controllable.

In a 19 November 2021 essay for Aeon, sleep researchers Adam Haar Horowitz, Robert Stickgold, and Antonio Zadra warned that commercial use of dream incubation was developing. They also stressed the gap between experimental cueing and advertising that reliably changes consumer behavior: “To be clear, we don’t think that sleep and dream science is sufficiently advanced at this point to reliably use TDI to influence consumer behaviour at scale.”
The Coors campaign was real; its effects are not established
Before Super Bowl LV in 2021, Molson Coors promoted an audio/video experience intended to associate Coors beer with positive imagery through dream incubation. The promotion offered participants a discount and a free 12-pack for referrals. Singer Zayn Malik also took part in an Instagram Live sleep event, which helped bring the campaign public attention.

Those details establish a marketing attempt and its stated aim—not that participants reliably dreamed about beer, that the campaign placed a controlled brand image in their dreams, or that it increased purchases. The 2021 open letter “Advertising in Dreams is Coming: Now What?” also discussed examples involving Xbox, PlayStation, and Burger King. These are examples of marketing activity and concern about future use, not evidence of an established, effective consumer-advertising channel.
What sleep-cueing studies show—and what they do not
Some experimental work suggests that cues can influence dream reports, particularly around the transition into sleep. In the Aeon essay, the authors described Dormio, a wearable research device that uses sleep sensors and prompts, with timed awakenings to collect verbal reports. In a study they reported, 25 participants experienced 67 awakenings; all but one awakening produced a hypnagogic dream report, and 45 reports mentioned trees after participants received a tree prompt.

This is evidence that a theme can appear in reports under a structured experimental setup. It does not establish precise control of dreams during ordinary consumer use, nor does it show that a brand can reliably be inserted into dreams or that a dream cue will produce a purchase.

The same essay described a sleep-cueing study involving adult smokers. The authors reported that targeted odor cues during sleep were followed by a 30 percent reduction in smoking over the next week, and that most participants did not remember the intervention. That figure is the essay authors’ account of a specific behavioral result; it is not evidence that branded dream advertising changes buying behavior. The authors said that reliable commercial influence at scale had not been demonstrated and that the cost effectiveness of large-scale sleep-related advertising remained unclear.

What the 2021 surveys do—and do not—say
The researchers reported figures from the American Marketing Association New York’s 2021 Future of Marketing study. They said more than 400 US marketers took part and that 77 percent aimed to deploy dream technology for advertising within three years. This measures stated intention in 2021, not how many marketers later deployed it, and it should not be read as a current forecast.
The Aeon essay also reported that more than 500 consumers were surveyed: 32 percent opposed advertiser use of dream incubation, while about three in ten were unsure. Those are reported 2021 opinions, not a measure of what consumers think today. The underlying survey instrument was not independently checked for the reporting, so the figures are best understood as the essay authors’ account of that study.

Why researchers are concerned
The ethical objections are not limited to whether a dream can be influenced. In their essay and open letter, the researchers raised concerns about people’s limited awareness of cues during sleep, poor recall afterward, and the difficulty of obtaining meaningful consent while someone is asleep. They also raised possible interference with memory processing and the prospect that sleep data could be collected or used for commercial targeting.

These are concerns and scenarios described by the researchers, not proof that advertisers are currently collecting dream data at scale. The open letter characterized TDI advertising as “not some fun gimmick, but a slippery slope with real consequences.” That is the authors’ argument for proactive safeguards, rather than a settled scientific or legal finding.
Is dream advertising legal, or already widespread?
The cited 2021 sources do not establish the current scale of commercial deployment or settle the present legal and regulatory status in any jurisdiction. A campaign and survey intentions from 2021 cannot answer whether advertisers are using dream-incubation methods now, whether a particular practice is lawful, or what protections apply. Those questions require current, jurisdiction-specific evidence.
The distinction to keep in view is between a technique that researchers have explored, a company’s attempt to use it for promotion, and demonstrated effects on consumers. The first two have documented examples in the 2021 reporting; reliable product placement in dreams and scalable changes to purchasing were not established there.
