If you may hurt yourself, have already taken an overdose, or need urgent medical care, do not wait for ChatGPT or a Trusted contact notification. In the US, call or text 988 for crisis support; for immediate medical danger, call 911 or go to an emergency room. Elsewhere, contact local emergency services or find a regional helpline through Find A Helpline. ChatGPT can offer supportive responses and point to human help, but it is not a therapist, crisis counselor, or emergency service.
Can ChatGPT help if I’m suicidal?
ChatGPT is designed to respond supportively, avoid giving instructions for self-harm, and encourage people expressing suicidal intent to contact professional help or someone they trust. OpenAI says it may also surface local crisis resources and direct people to emergency help in the most serious cases. These are descriptions of intended behavior, not a guarantee that the system will recognize every crisis or respond safely in every conversation. OpenAI’s account of its approach and its community safety description explain that approach.

ChatGPT cannot assess your safety the way a qualified professional can, provide emergency intervention, or replace ongoing mental-health care. OpenAI’s Usage Policies prohibit using its services to promote or facilitate suicide or self-harm, and restrict tailored advice that requires a professional license, such as medical advice, without appropriate licensed-professional involvement. Those rules are policy commitments, not proof that every output will meet them. OpenAI Usage Policies
A dated Model Spec snapshot from April 11, 2025 says the assistant should not encourage or enable self-harm, should tell users that people and resources can help, and should advise immediate help when someone is in imminent danger. It is a published behavioral standard from that date, not a live guarantee for every model or response. Model Spec (2025/04/11)

What should I do if ChatGPT says I might be in crisis?
Treat the message as a prompt to connect with a person or service, not as a diagnosis or a substitute for your own judgment. If you might be in immediate danger, have injured yourself, taken something harmful, have a plan and cannot stay safe, contact local emergency services or go to an emergency department. For emotional distress or suicidal thoughts without an immediate medical emergency, a crisis line can connect you with trained listeners and help you consider next steps.
OpenAI’s Help Center says US users can call or text 988. Outside the US, use local crisis services; Find A Helpline offers a directory for finding regional options. Available ways to reach a helpline differ by service and location, so check whether the specific service supports phone, text, or chat. OpenAI notes that crisis lines are not emergency medical care, long-term therapy, or legal, housing, or financial services. Crisis Helpline Support in ChatGPT
How do crisis resources in ChatGPT work?
OpenAI says it has introduced localized helplines in ChatGPT in partnership with ThroughLine. The Help Center describes crisis lines as services connecting people experiencing emotional distress, suicidal thoughts, or a mental-health crisis with trained listeners. Depending on the service, contact may be by call, text, or chat. The line itself—not ChatGPT—is the point of contact when you reach out.

OpenAI says it does not share ChatGPT conversations with crisis lines. When you contact one, you communicate with that service under its own terms. A helpline can offer human support, but it is not a substitute for emergency care when someone has an urgent injury or overdose. OpenAI Help Center
Can ChatGPT contact someone I trust?
OpenAI describes Trusted contact as an optional feature: you choose a person, and that person must accept the invitation. According to the current Help Center description, it is available to adults 18 or older in most countries and territories on personal ChatGPT accounts. It is not enabled in shared Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspaces and is not currently available in ChatGPT Voice. Availability can change; check the current Trusted contacts help page for the latest scope.
OpenAI says automated systems may flag a conversation suggesting a serious safety concern, after which trained human reviewers may assess it. If reviewers determine that it may indicate a serious safety situation, ChatGPT may send the selected contact a brief notification by email, text, WhatsApp, or in-app notification. The notification gives only the general reason that suicide came up in a potentially concerning way; OpenAI says it does not include chat details or a transcript.

This feature is not an emergency service, crisis-response system, or replacement for mental-health care. OpenAI cautions that the systems may not interpret every conversation correctly and a notification may not reflect exactly what the person is experiencing. If someone may be in immediate danger, do not wait for a notification—contact emergency services or a crisis line directly. OpenAI Help Center
What should I say to someone who might be suicidal?
OpenAI’s Help Center guidance recommends a calm, direct, caring check-in. Asking clearly about suicide or self-harm can help you understand what is happening. The guidance says research shows that asking directly whether someone is suicidal does not increase suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Being someone’s trusted contact
- Ask plainly: “Have you been thinking about hurting yourself?” or “Are you having thoughts about ending your life?”
- Listen without judgment. If the person says yes, stay present and ask gentle follow-up questions to understand urgency.
- You can say: “I am here with you. I am really sorry you are carrying this. Can we keep talking about this together?”
- If the person may be in immediate danger, has a plan, cannot stay safe, or you do not feel safe, contact local emergency services. A helpline can also help you consider what to do next.
- Agree on a follow-up and, where appropriate, help connect the person with additional support.
How strong is the evidence that ChatGPT’s approach works?
OpenAI has reported work with more than 170 mental-health experts to improve responses in sensitive conversations. It also reported a 65–80% reduction in responses “that fall short of our desired behavior.” That figure is OpenAI’s result from its own evaluation; it is not an independent clinical finding, a measure of crises resolved, or proof of real-world effectiveness. Strengthening ChatGPT’s responses in sensitive conversations
OpenAI has separately said it works with more than 90 physicians across more than 30 countries, including psychiatrists, pediatricians, and general practitioners, on its approach. Helping people when they need it most The reviewed sources do not provide an independently validated comparison of ChatGPT’s outcomes with those of clinicians, crisis counselors, or other suicide-prevention interventions. Its published improvement figures therefore describe company-reported system evaluations, not evidence that ChatGPT is as effective as human support.
