Researchers have grown microbial fiber networks through loose sand, creating a cohesive material they call “living sand.” In laboratory tests, bacterial nanocellulose made the treated sand far less permeable to water, but the often-repeated “six times longer” description refers to water flow through a sample—not to crops surviving six times longer between watering. The work is an early materials demonstration, not proof that deserts can now be farmed.
What the researchers actually made
The study, published in Carbohydrate Polymers on 15 December 2025 as “Living sand: Microbial nanocellulose and chitin-rich mycelia enhance granular material properties,” tested whether microorganisms could bind individual sand grains into a stronger, more water-slowing structure.

The bacterial system used the cellulose-producing species Komagataeibacter medellinensis. The fungal experiments used two strains of Schizophyllum commune, whose mycelium contains chitin-rich fibers. Researchers placed the organisms in sterilized sand supplied with nutrient solutions. The sand came from dunes near Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, with standardized laboratory sand used for some strength tests.

What “six times longer” means—and what it does not
In-situ bacterial nanocellulose reduced water permeance by about sixfold compared with untreated sand. Permeance here describes how quickly water moves through the laboratory sample. A lower rate means water passes through more slowly; it does not establish that a planted field would remain irrigated for six times as long.
The study measured water-holding capacity separately. Sand treated with bacterial fibers grown in place held 25.53% ± 0.50% water, compared with 20.17% ± 0.43% for untreated control sand. That is a measured increase in the sample’s water content, not a field watering interval or crop-survival result.

How the seven-day experiment worked
- Prepare the medium: Researchers sterilized sand and supplied nutrient solutions so the microorganisms could grow under controlled laboratory conditions.
- Grow fibers through the sand: K. medellinensis produced cellulose around and between grains. Fungal mycelium also spread through the particles and provided binding.
- Allow the structure to develop: After seven days, the bacterial treatment formed an approximately 6-centimeter sand column.
- Test cohesion: The column could be removed from its mold, cut, and immersed in water while remaining intact. Growth was uneven, however, and the upper portion was weaker.
The organisms needed controlled water, nutrients and oxygen. Those requirements are central to any attempt to move the process outside a laboratory.

| Approach | Water-flow result | Structure and test evidence | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-situ bacterial nanocellulose | About sixfold lower water permeance than untreated sand | Fibers formed throughout the grains; water-holding capacity was 25.53% ± 0.50%. A seven-day run produced a removable, cuttable sand column about 6 cm long. | Growth was uneven and the upper column was weaker; ongoing water, nutrients and oxygen were required. |
| Ex-situ bacterial-cellulose sheet | About 28-fold lower permeability in the layered setup | A separately grown cellulose sheet was inserted between sand layers. In a 10-kilogram loading demonstration, the reinforced cube deformed less than untreated sand. | The result comes from a different layered configuration, so it cannot be treated as the in-situ sixfold figure. |
| Fungal mycelium | The paper did not report a comparable fold reduction | Schizophyllum commune mycelium bound neighboring grains and contributed a fiber network. | Fungal samples were more likely to break during removal or cutting than the bacterial samples. |
Could living sand make deserts farmable?
Not on the evidence available from this experiment. The authors did not test crop growth, agricultural yield, dust emissions, or survival through real desert weather. They also did not establish how long the microbial fibers would remain functional, how quickly they would decompose, or what ecological effects large-scale deployment could cause.
A field system would need to deliver and maintain moisture, nutrients and oxygen across large areas. It would also have to cope with heat, ultraviolet exposure, wind-driven abrasion, salt, uneven wetting and contamination by other organisms. The laboratory column’s small size and controlled conditions cannot answer those engineering questions.

Blaise Tardy, a professor at Khalifa University, said deployment is not science fiction and pointed to potential nutrient sources in the United Arab Emirates, including sugars from food waste and complex nutrients in green municipal waste. That observation identifies a possible feedstock route; it is not a demonstration of a working desert installation.

Is living sand available to buy?
No established commercial product, agricultural service or consumer material emerged from this study. The work is a laboratory proof of concept, and bacterial nanocellulose sheets, fungal inoculants, erosion-control blankets and generic soil amendments should not be treated as equivalent products.

What researchers need to test next
- Whether fibers can grow uniformly through larger and deeper sand volumes.
- How much water, oxygen and nutrient input is needed during production and maintenance.
- Whether the material survives repeated wetting and drying, heat, wind and ultraviolet exposure.
- How quickly bacterial cellulose and fungal mycelium break down in soil and what organisms they affect.
- Whether the treated sand reduces erosion or dust under realistic wind conditions.
- Whether plants can germinate and produce reliable yields in the material without harmful residues or ecological side effects.
For now, “living sand” is best understood as a biodegradable, microbe-built method for reinforcing granular material and slowing water movement. Its most striking numbers—sixfold for fibers grown in place and about 28-fold for a layered cellulose sheet—describe controlled laboratory permeability tests, not a sixfold extension of farm watering schedules.
