A reaction can behave differently at an electrode than a pH reading from the surrounding liquid would suggest. A Seoul National University team reports that proton activity in this thin, local zone can change oxygen-transfer electrosynthesis—affecting both the desired chemistry and the survival of its product. By redesigning the reactor to manage those local conditions, the researchers improved selectivity in a laboratory reaction.
What “local pH” means near an electrode
In an electrochemical reaction, electron transfer at an electrode can occur alongside the movement of ions, including protons. When the reaction is fast, proton activity can build up or fall near the electrode, creating a local chemical environment that differs from the bulk solution. A measurement of the liquid as a whole may therefore miss conditions in the region where the reaction is taking place.

The study, “Local pH Control Promotes Oxygen-Atom Transfer Electrosynthesis,” examines how these local gradients affect oxygen-transfer chemistry. Its findings concern the electro-organic reactions studied—not every chemical reaction or every electrochemical setup. The paper appeared online in the Journal of the American Chemical Society on September 4, 2026.

Why the gradients changed the reaction
The team investigated oxygen-driven Baeyer–Villiger oxidation, a reaction that inserts an oxygen atom into a ketone to form an ester or a lactone. The paper reports isotope-labeling evidence that molecular oxygen (O2) supplies the inserted atom. Its mechanistic evidence is consistent with oxygen-derived hydroperoxyl-radical equivalents participating in oxygen transfer, with anodic oxidation of electrogenerated hydrogen peroxide helping sustain the radical flux.

Local proton activity affected more than the supply of reactive oxygen species. According to the study’s abstract, the gradients could reduce the availability of those species, divert ketones through alpha-enolization and tautomerization, and accelerate hydrolysis of lactone products. In other words, the local environment could interfere with formation of the desired product and with its persistence once formed.
How the researchers controlled local conditions
The team used electrode spacing and convective flow of the electrolyte to attenuate the proton-activity gradients. The researchers combined local-pH estimates, molecular reporters and transport simulations to connect the gradients with reaction performance. The abstract reports high-yield oxidation across diverse ketones at elevated substrate loading after the gradients were mitigated, and says the control strategy was also extended to electrochemical epoxidation.

The Seoul National University College of Engineering’s 2026 research-news summary reports that selectivity rose from about 16% to about 97% after local-pH control through reactor redesign. Those figures describe the conditions of the reported experiments; they are not a general performance guarantee for other reactions. The university summary attributes this observation to the team’s work, while the journal abstract provides the mechanistic account.
What the result does—and does not—show
The central implication is a reactor-design one: in the electro-organic reactions studied, local proton activity was an important variable alongside the substrates and catalysts. Controlling spacing and flow may help researchers manage that environment rather than relying only on the bulk solution’s pH.
