Save Their Work First: Sign Out Another Windows 11 User

Use Start to sign out from another user’s desktop, or identify the correct session and run Windows’ documented logoff command from your account.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To sign out someone using the PC, have them save their work, then open Start, select their account name or picture, and choose Sign out. If you are already signed into a different account and need to end another active session, Windows provides the logoff command, but you must identify the correct session and have Full Control permission. Signing out closes that user’s apps; unsaved work may be lost.

Sign out from the other user’s desktop

  1. Ask the user to save any open work.
  2. Select Start.
  3. Select the user’s account picture or name.
  4. Select Sign out.

Windows closes the applications in that account’s session and returns to a sign-in state. Microsoft warns that unsaved work may be lost when a user signs out: Microsoft Support: User Account Access in Windows.

You can also press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open the security screen and select Sign out. The available controls and wording can differ by Windows configuration; organization-managed devices may show an additional Switch user option.

End another active session from your own account

If you are signed into a different account, use the session ID rather than guessing which session belongs to the other person. Microsoft documents query session for viewing session information and logoff for ending a specified session.

  • EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection

  • SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
  • FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
  1. Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
  2. Run query session and review the listed sessions. Access to information about other sessions may depend on your permissions. See Microsoft Learn: query session.
  3. Confirm the numeric session ID for the user you intend to sign out. Do not use your own ID or guess.
  4. Tell the user you are about to end the session and confirm their work is saved.
  5. Run logoff <sessionID>, replacing <sessionID> with that user’s numeric session ID. For example, if the confirmed ID is 3, run logoff 3.

Microsoft says Full Control permission is required to log off users from other sessions. Logging off ends the session’s processes and deletes the session; it can cause data loss if the user has not saved. See Microsoft Learn: logoff.

Sign out, switch users, or lock the PC?

Action What happens to the existing session? When to use it
Sign out The session ends and its open apps close; unsaved work may be lost. When the goal is to end that user’s session.
Switch user The existing session and its apps remain open while Windows moves to another sign-in screen. When someone else needs to sign in without closing the first user’s session.
Lock The session and apps stay open while the device is secured. When the user is stepping away temporarily.

Removing an account through Settings is account management, not a way to close its current session. You do not need to remove an account or shut down the PC just to sign out one user. For account-removal details, see Microsoft Support: Manage user accounts in Windows.

Is Task Manager’s Users tab a verified sign-out method?

Microsoft’s general Windows account-access guidance does not document a Task Manager Users-tab procedure for signing out another local user. Because the exact steps are not established in that guidance, use the Start-menu route when at the other user’s desktop or the documented session commands when managing another active session.
