Save Page WE File Size Limit: How to Save Pages With Large Images

Save Page WE documents a maximum size for large or repeated resources, not a confirmed cap for the entire saved HTML file. Check item selection, lazy loading, and resource warnings when images are missing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save Page WE has a configurable maximum size for large or repeatedly referenced resources, but its official listings do not state the setting’s default, units, or how it handles a resource that exceeds the threshold. They also do not document a single overall file-size limit for the finished HTML file. If large images are missing, check the saved-item selection and lazy-loading options before assuming you have hit a total-file cap.

What Save Page WE’s file-size setting controls

Save Page WE saves a web page as a single HTML file and documents a setting for the maximum size allowed for large or repeatedly referenced resources. That is a per-resource control, not evidence of a maximum size for the complete saved page. The Mozilla Add-ons and Chrome Web Store listings do not specify the setting’s numeric default, units, exact behavior at the threshold, or whether an oversized resource is skipped, truncated, or handled another way. The exact control name can also vary by installed version. Check the Options page in your browser rather than relying on an assumed value. Mozilla Add-ons listing; Chrome Web Store listing.

How to save pages with large images in Save Page WE

  1. Open the extension’s Options page. In Firefox, right-click the Save Page WE toolbar button, choose Manage Extension, open the three-dot menu, then select Options. In Chrome, right-click the toolbar button and choose Options. Menu wording may differ by installed version.
  2. Review the maximum resource-size setting. If the page contains unusually large images or resources referenced repeatedly, inspect the relevant size option. The official listings do not establish a universal recommended value, unit, or threshold behavior, so use the setting and its explanation shown in your installed version.
  3. Choose an item set that includes the images you need. Basic Items are described as including currently displayed HTML images. Standard Items add all HTML image files. Custom Items let you choose image categories. If the saved page omits images, check this selection first.
  4. Load content that appears only as you scroll. For lazy-loaded images, try the option to load lazy images in existing content. Save Page WE also documents Scroll Page and Shrink Page methods for loading lazy content; try these when images are not present until the page is scrolled or otherwise expanded.
  5. Enable the warning and resource list. Save Page WE can show a warning and list resources it could not save. Review that information to identify unavailable or excluded resources instead of treating every missing image as proof of a total HTML-file limit.
  6. Save again and check the result. Open the saved HTML file and inspect the sections where images were missing. If the warning list identifies particular resources, use it to narrow the issue; the listing does not specify how the extension handles an individual resource above its configured maximum.

Why images may be missing or the saved file may be large

The selected item set excludes some images

Basic Items include currently displayed HTML images, while Standard Items add all HTML image files. Custom Items allow image categories to be selected. A page with images that were not displayed at capture time may therefore need a different item set.

Resources could not be saved

Use Save Page WE’s warning and resource list, when enabled, to distinguish a failed or unavailable resource from one excluded by your selection. The official listings do not identify a universal reason for each failure.

Repeated CSS images contribute repeated content

The extension offers an option to merge duplicate CSS images. It may reduce repeated CSS-image content, but the listing does not claim it reduces every large page or the size of HTML images.

Save Page WE vs. the browser’s built-in save options

Workflow What it saves Best fit
Save Page WE A single HTML file; saved items and resource loading are configurable. When you want a self-contained HTML page and control over which resources to include.
Firefox: Web page, complete The page plus pictures and other required files in a separate directory. When a companion resource folder is acceptable.
Firefox: HTML only One HTML file without pictures. When preserving the HTML link structure matters more than having images available offline.
Save an individual image A selected image saved separately. When you only need one particular large image.
Chrome: Save page as Chrome Help documents the action but does not describe its output behavior in detail. When using Chrome’s built-in page-saving action and its resulting format suits your needs.

Mozilla Support documents Firefox’s complete-page and HTML-only choices, as well as saving an individual image; its page was last updated August 11, 2023. Google Chrome Help documents Chrome’s Save page as and Save image as actions. Mozilla Support: How to save a web page; Google Chrome Help: Download a file.

Troubleshooting the Save Page WE file size limit and missing images

  • There is no obvious numeric limit in Options: the official listings do not publish a default or units. Look for the maximum-resource-size control in your installed version; do not assume a value from another browser or version.
  • The saved page has fewer images than the live page: check whether Basic Items is selected, then consider Standard or Custom Items and enable lazy-image loading as needed.
  • Images appear only after scrolling: try Scroll Page or Shrink Page to load lazy content before saving.
  • You cannot tell whether a resource was excluded or failed: enable the warning and list of resources that could not be saved, then inspect the listed items.
  • The saved HTML is unexpectedly large: consider whether the page includes many or large resources and whether duplicate CSS-image merging is appropriate. This option is not documented as a universal size-reduction method.
  • You need an image rather than an offline page: save that image individually using the browser’s image-saving action.
