Owncast is a self-hosted streaming destination that receives an RTMP broadcast; it is not a drop-in replacement for an encoder or a documented one-step relay to YouTube. Choose Owncast if you also want your own self-hosted viewing destination and are ready to administer a server. Choose FFmpeg if YouTube is the destination and you can manage the playlist, command and recovery process.
First, understand what each tool does
Owncast and FFmpeg occupy different roles. FFmpeg is a media tool that can encode and send a source to a streaming endpoint. Owncast is a server application that accepts an RTMP broadcast and makes it available through its own viewing destination. Owncast’s FFmpeg example sends a camera and audio input to an Owncast server; it is not a ready-made command for looping recorded files or relaying them to YouTube. Owncast’s FFmpeg guide

YouTube’s encoder workflow, by contrast, asks you to enter YouTube’s live server URL and stream key in the encoder. If YouTube is your only destination, that avoids adding an Owncast server to the path. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions

| StreamNeo | A YouTube-only 24/7 stream of uploaded recordings, without keeping a computer on at home. | Upload the video or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, then start the stream. The cloud service loops the uploaded video and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. |
| Direct FFmpeg to YouTube | YouTube is the destination and you are comfortable maintaining an encoder process. | A host that stays on, an input file or playlist workflow, a valid YouTube stream URL and key, sufficient encoding capacity and upload bandwidth, plus monitoring and restart handling. |
| Owncast | You want a separate self-hosted viewing destination in addition to, or instead of, YouTube. | A reachable server, Owncast installation and administration, RTMP ingest, credentials and stream-key management, and broadcasting software. |
There is no official ready-made Owncast-to-YouTube relay or playlist scheduler established in the documentation cited here. If you want both destinations, plan to configure them separately; the cited sources do not verify a turnkey fan-out or dual-output design.

How to send recorded video directly to YouTube with FFmpeg
1. Prepare YouTube Live and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, create or configure the live stream and obtain the server URL and stream key using YouTube’s encoder setup flow. Enter them in your encoder rather than publishing them in a script repository, log, screenshot or public chat. Treat the key like a password.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP over a secure SSL connection. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance
- Set the output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to match both the source and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Higher resolution and frame rate require more encoding capacity and bitrate; also check that sustained upload bandwidth is adequate.
2. Build and test the recorded-video workflow
FFmpeg’s command depends on the file format, intended output and installed build, so there is no single safe command that applies to every recording. Configure it to read the chosen file or playlist, encode or pass through compatible audio and video as appropriate, and publish an FLV/RTMP output to YouTube’s ingest URL with the stream key. For a 24/7 playlist, decide explicitly what happens at end of file: advance to the next item, loop the list, or stop. A process that reaches end-of-file without playlist logic will not keep playing indefinitely.
Test the complete path before relying on it. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream, using representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. Check that the YouTube preview receives a stable picture and sound, that the selected bitrate fits your connection, and that transitions between playlist items behave as intended. 3. Keep the process alive and handle failures
A command running in a terminal is not, by itself, a 24/7 operating plan. Run the encoder under a process supervisor or an equivalent service manager, configure startup after reboot, and monitor both the process and YouTube’s stream health. Define what should happen after a network interruption, an encoder crash, a missing playlist file or exhausted disk space. Test recovery deliberately; the cited YouTube and FFmpeg materials do not prescribe a complete supervision or restart configuration.

Plan archival separately. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not promise automatic archival for one uninterrupted stream lasting 24 hours or longer. Check current YouTube behavior and decide whether to split broadcasts or keep a separate recording. YouTube’s encoder instructions

When Owncast belongs in the design
Choose Owncast when you want to operate a separate self-hosted streaming destination. Its broadcasting documentation describes receiving RTMP from compatible broadcast software, while noting not every application has been tested. The default ingest uses TCP port 1935 and the /live/ path with a stream key; the web interface uses port 8080 in the manual installation documentation. Make the required ports reachable as appropriate for your deployment, change default credentials and replace or securely manage the stream key. Owncast broadcasting setup · Owncast manual installation
Owncast advises running the service as a system service so it can remain in the background and start on boot. Its server still needs administration and sufficient capacity for the configured quality. The cited documentation does not establish a built-in recorded-video playlist scheduler or a YouTube relay, so do not assume adding Owncast automatically creates a YouTube 24/7 pipeline.

Encoding and stream settings that matter
- Video and audio: Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for assured compatibility. These are sensible compatibility targets, but choose output settings for the actual destination and media.
- Keyframes: Owncast recommends a two-second keyframe interval. In FFmpeg,
-gcounts frames, so set it to twice the frame rate for a two-second interval—for example, 60 at 30 fps or 50 at 25 fps. Owncast broadcasting guidance - Preset and CPU: Owncast’s sample uses
libx264with theveryfastpreset. The guide explains the trade-off: a faster preset uses less CPU but is less compression-efficient; slower presets can improve compression efficiency while requiring more CPU. Test on the actual host rather than assuming it can sustain the chosen settings. Owncast’s FFmpeg example - Audio example values: That sample uses AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. They are example values, not universal requirements; select audio settings that suit the source and current YouTube guidance.
- Resolution, frame rate and bitrate: Higher resolution and frame rate need more bitrate and encoding capacity. Verify the current YouTube recommendations for the chosen output and test with representative content and motion. No single bitrate is appropriate for every resolution, frame rate, source or network.
Continuity, security and cost trade-offs
Continuity
For either self-managed route, continuity depends on more than a successful first connection. Account for the host staying powered and connected, process supervision, source-file availability, playlist transitions and a tested response to dropped ingest. The official documentation reviewed here does not provide a comparative uptime or reliability result for Owncast versus FFmpeg.
Security
Keep YouTube’s stream key private and use RTMPS as YouTube recommends. For Owncast, replace default credentials and protect its stream key and server access. Restrict administrative access and avoid exposing secrets in command histories or public configuration files.

Cost
FFmpeg itself is a software route, but a 24/7 self-managed stream still uses a computer or server, power, network capacity and time spent maintaining the pipeline. Owncast adds a server and its administration to the setup. Actual hosting, electricity and network costs depend on your location and deployment; no comparative cost figure is established here.
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube receives no signal: Confirm the live event is ready, the ingest URL and stream key are correct, and the selected destination is YouTube rather than an Owncast endpoint. Check logs for connection or authentication errors.
- Picture stutters or drops frames: Compare the configured bitrate and resolution with sustained upload capacity and encoder headroom. Lower the output demand or use a capable host, then retest with representative motion.
- Stream stops when a file ends: Add and test explicit playlist or loop behavior. Confirm the next media item exists and can be read; a single input naturally ends.
- Stream does not resume after a disconnect or reboot: Check that the process supervisor starts the encoder, that credentials remain valid, and that the source and network are available. A restart policy should be tested rather than assumed.
- Owncast ingest cannot be reached: Verify the RTMP destination, stream key, server status and network access to the configured ingest port. The documented default is TCP 1935; the web interface default is port 8080.
- Archive is missing for a long broadcast: YouTube’s cited automatic archive guidance is for streams under 12 hours. For longer operations, verify current platform behavior and preserve a separate recording or split streams if archiving is required.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded recordings live on YouTube, StreamNeo avoids leaving a home computer, OBS or home connection running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, and streams the file as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
