Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMonitor an Owncast-to-YouTube broadcast at both ends: Owncast shows what is happening on its server and viewer-delivery path, while YouTube Live Control Room shows whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Add host and network checks for the infrastructure between them, and verify the public watch page rather than trusting a dashboard or viewer count alone.
What each monitoring layer can tell you
| Layer | What to check | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Owncast admin | Stream Performance charts, hardware indicators, and application metrics. | Some playback details depend on player reporting; server-observed segment measurements do not cover viewers fetching segments from S3-compatible storage. |
| Host and service | Process or service uptime, CPU and memory, disk capacity, and network availability using your host-level monitoring. | These are not all included in Owncast’s exported metrics. |
| YouTube Live Control Room | Incoming stream health, timestamped errors, preview, and real-time audience analytics. | Viewer counts and duration do not prove that audio and video are healthy. |
Use these signals together. A healthy Owncast server does not by itself establish that YouTube is receiving the feed, and YouTube analytics do not explain every viewer-side playback issue.

Check Owncast playback and server signals
Review the Stream Performance page
- Sign in to Owncast’s admin interface and open
/admin/stream-health. - Review the charts for video-segment downloads, player network speed, errors and quality changes, and viewer latency.
- Look for changes over time and relate them to viewer reports or incidents. Detailed playback metrics can depend on whether a web player reports them. Owncast may observe segment delivery itself when player metrics are unavailable, but that observation covers segments served by Owncast—not downloads from S3-compatible storage.
Check hardware and collect metrics externally
- Use Owncast’s hardware view for its high-level CPU, memory, and disk indicators.
- For external collection, configure Prometheus to scrape
/api/admin/prometheususing admin basic-auth credentials. Use HTTPS where available and keep the endpoint and credentials protected. - Set the scrape interval with the metric refresh rate in mind. Owncast says exported values refresh every two minutes; scraping more often does not provide greater resolution.
- Use exported gauges such as active viewers, chat clients, playback errors, and internal CPU usage as application signals. Add separate host checks for service/process uptime, memory, disk capacity, and network availability where needed.
Do not expose administrative access publicly or publish credentials. Owncast’s documentation describes authenticated metric collection; the exact firewall or reverse-proxy arrangement depends on your deployment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check the stream arriving at YouTube
- During the broadcast, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the event and check stream health and any timestamped error messages.
- Inspect the incoming preview to confirm that the video and audio reaching YouTube look and sound right.
- Open the public watch page and confirm it is accessible and playing. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.
- Use concurrent viewers and duration in real-time analytics as supporting context, not as a substitute for checking the actual feed.
For encoder and transport setup, follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings and streaming tips. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport; its settings guidance lists bitrate recommendations by codec and resolution. Leave upload-capacity headroom: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% when planning available bandwidth.

Confirm the Owncast-to-YouTube connection
Owncast accepts RTMP ingest on TCP port 1935 by default, using the /live path and a stream key; its web interface defaults to port 8080. In OBS, use a custom RTMP destination and the matching Owncast stream key. Consult the current Owncast setup guide and streaming documentation for configuration details. Keep the stream key private and replace default credentials. A stream reaching Owncast is not proof that the separate outgoing connection to YouTube is healthy, so check YouTube’s Live Control Room as well.
Set alerts and plan for interruptions
Owncast provides a stream-live webhook that can trigger external notifications or automation. Pair event notifications with supervision from your operating system or container service manager and independent checks of the public Owncast page and YouTube destination. Owncast’s documentation describes these ingredients, but not a complete, guaranteed restart or failover design for an Owncast-to-YouTube 24/7 relay.
- Decide which failures should notify an operator: service exit, host resource pressure, loss of network availability, Owncast playback errors, or YouTube ingestion errors.
- Keep an independent check on the viewer-facing Owncast page and the YouTube destination; a process being active does not establish that either public playback path works.
- Test failure scenarios deliberately, including a service restart and a temporary network interruption, and confirm what your alerts detect and what recovery actually does.
Recovery behavior depends on your environment. Do not assume the webhook, service manager, or a green dashboard alone guarantees continuous broadcast.
Triage problems by comparing the signals
| Symptom | Where to look next |
|---|---|
| Owncast service or hardware indicators are unhealthy | Investigate the host, resource pressure, service status, and network availability. |
| Owncast appears healthy, but YouTube reports ingestion errors | Check the outbound route, encoder settings, stream key and destination configuration, then follow YouTube’s timestamped status messages. |
| Only some viewers report playback trouble | Review Owncast segment and player metrics, player reporting support, and whether the affected delivery path uses S3-compatible storage, which is outside the server-observed segment metrics. |
| YouTube shows viewers, but playback quality is uncertain | Check the incoming preview and public watch page for picture and sound; analytics alone cannot establish feed quality. |
Keep a 24/7 monitoring routine
- Check Owncast’s Stream Performance charts and hardware indicators for changes or errors.
- Review host and service monitoring independently of Owncast’s application metrics.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for destination health and inspect the preview and public watch page.
- When an alert fires, record the time and compare Owncast, host, network, and YouTube signals around that moment.
- Re-test alerts and recovery after changing the encoder, hosting, network, or service configuration.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not infer from that guidance how longer broadcasts will be handled; check YouTube’s current live streaming archive information for applicable details.
