Save Any PDF to Apple Books on iPhone or iPad: Complete Steps

To save a PDF in Apple Books, open it in Mail, Messages, Files, Safari, or another app, tap the Share button, and choose Books. Then open Books and tap Library to find the saved item. Safari also offers a dedicated Save to Books command for PDFs and webpages. If you want an ordinary file rather than a reading copy in Books, choose Save to Files instead.

The quickest method

The share sheet is the common route on both iPhone and iPad. The app that currently displays the PDF does not matter: the sequence is open the document, tap Share, select Books, then look in Books > Library.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open the PDF attachment or file so the document is visible.
  2. Tap the Share icon. It is usually a square with an upward arrow, although its position varies by app.
  3. Tap Books in the list of destinations.
  4. Open the Books app and tap Library.
  5. Tap the PDF’s cover to open it.

Apple documents this flow for PDFs received in Mail, Messages, and other apps. The same core action applies on iPhone and iPad, even though the share sheet may be arranged differently on the two devices.

Choose the destination before you share

Books and Files solve different problems. Books is the reading destination; Files is general-purpose file storage. Decide where you want the document before tapping a destination.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Destination Best for What you do
Books Reading a PDF later as part of your Books library, with the document presented as a book-style item Use Share > Books, then open Library
Files Keeping the PDF in a folder for general file management or moving it to another location Use Share > Save to Files, choose a location, name the file, and tap Save

Sending a PDF to Books does not replace the option to keep a copy in Files. If you need a particular folder, a predictable filename, or ordinary file management, use Save to Files. If your goal is simply to read the document in Apple Books, choose Books.

Save a PDF from Mail, Messages, or another app

This is the standard procedure for an attachment or a PDF opened by a third-party app. Apple’s instructions cover Mail, Messages, and other apps together because the important control is the system Share button, not the source app.

  1. Open the attachment. In Mail or Messages, tap the PDF attachment. In another app, open the document until you can view the PDF itself rather than only a message containing it.
  2. Reveal the document controls. Some viewers show the Share button immediately. If the controls are hidden, tap once on the page to bring them back.
  3. Tap Share. Use the system Share button supplied by the viewer. Do not confuse it with a reply, forward, or app-specific action.
  4. Select Books. Tap Books in the row or list of sharing destinations. The PDF is handed to Apple Books; you do not need a cable, adapter, stand, case, or stylus.
  5. Confirm in Books. Open Apple Books, tap Library, and tap the cover for the PDF.

Mail attachments

In Mail, tap the attachment to open it before sharing. Sharing from the message view can expose message actions instead of the PDF actions, so make sure the document is the item on screen. Once the PDF viewer is open, use Share, choose Books, and verify it under Library.

Messages attachments

In Messages, tap the PDF bubble or attachment to open it. If a preview appears, use its Share button. The conversation remains in Messages; the saved reading copy is accessed separately in Books under Library.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

PDFs opened by another app

Document managers, cloud-storage apps, and other viewers can use their own button layouts. Look for the system Share command after the PDF is open. When Books is offered as a destination, tap it, then check Books > Library.

Save a PDF directly from Safari

Safari has a named command, Save to Books, for both PDF files and webpages. This is useful when a PDF opens in a browser tab or when you want to preserve a webpage for reading in Books.

  1. In Safari, navigate to the PDF or webpage.
  2. Tap Share. On iPad, you can also click Share when using a pointer or keyboard.
  3. Choose Save to Books.
  4. If Save to Books is not visible, tap More in the share options and add or select it there.
  5. Open Books on the iPhone or iPad.
  6. Tap Library, then tap the cover to open the saved PDF or webpage.

When Safari shows a webpage instead of a PDF

Safari can share either the PDF currently displayed or the webpage around it. Before choosing Save to Books, check what is visible in the tab. If the PDF viewer is on screen, the saved item is the PDF. If a normal webpage is on screen, Safari saves the webpage for later reading instead.

If you want a Safari PDF as a normal file

Use Safari’s Share button and choose Save to Files instead of Save to Books. In the Files dialog, enter a filename if needed, select a folder or storage location, and tap Save. The document will then be managed in Files rather than appearing as a book in the Books library.

Where the PDF appears after sharing

Apple’s documented location is Books > Library. Open the Books app, tap Library, and look for the cover representing the PDF or webpage. Tap that cover to read it.

If you used Save to Files, do not look in Books. Open the Files app and browse to the location you selected during the save dialog. Books and Files are separate destinations, so a successful save to one does not place the item in the other.

When the item is not obvious in Library

  • Reopen Books and tap Library; the item may not be visible while you are on another Books screen.
  • Check that you selected Books, not Save to Files, in the share sheet.
  • Return to the original app and repeat the share action if the share sheet closed before a destination was selected.
  • For Safari, verify whether you saved a PDF or the surrounding webpage; both use the same Save to Books command but may have different covers or titles.

iPhone and iPad: what changes and what does not

The essential workflow is the same on both devices: open the document, use Share, choose Books, and locate it in Library. The screen layout, size of the share sheet, and placement of the Share control can differ because iPad presents more space and may be used with a pointer or keyboard.

Apple notes that Books availability and interface labels can vary by region and operating-system version. If a label is worded slightly differently or appears in another part of the share sheet, look for the Books destination or the Save to Books command rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.

Why you might not see Books or Save to Books

You are sharing the wrong screen

Some apps show separate share controls for a message, a web link, and the document itself. Open the PDF first, then invoke Share from the PDF viewer. In Safari, make sure the PDF or webpage you intend to save is the active content.

Safari places the command under More

Apple specifically directs Safari users to tap More when Save to Books is not listed. Open More from the share options and add or select Save to Books there, then return to the share sheet and use it.

The app does not expose a Books destination

Not every app presents destinations in the same order. Look through the complete share sheet for Books. If the app only offers a link or a proprietary export action, first use its command to open or export the actual PDF, then invoke the system Share button from the PDF viewer. The documented requirement is that the PDF be open and available to the system share sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The labels differ from an example you saw online

Apple’s interface can change with the operating-system version and region. A changed icon position or a slightly different list arrangement does not change the underlying route: Share, Books, then Library. Safari’s dedicated wording is Save to Books.

Books versus Files: a practical decision guide

Choose Books when reading is the goal

Books is the direct destination when you want the PDF in a reading library. The documented flow is short, and the result is opened from Books by tapping Library and then the cover. This is the appropriate choice for manuals, articles, forms, or other PDFs you plan to read in the Books app.

Choose Files when storage and organization are the goal

Files is the better destination when you need to choose a folder, preserve a file-oriented name, or manage the PDF alongside other documents. From Safari, select Save to Files, choose the location, and tap Save. The same destination choice is available from the share sheet in other apps when they expose Save to Files.

Use both when you need two purposes

If one copy must remain in a particular Files folder while another should be available for reading in Books, perform the share action separately for each destination. Treat the two results as separate copies and verify each one in its own app.

  1. Display the PDF in Safari.
  2. Tap or click Share.
  3. Select Save to Files.
  4. Choose the destination, name the file, and tap Save.
  5. Open Files and browse to the selected location.

What is required

This workflow requires no physical accessory. You do not need a cable, adapter, stand, case, or stylus to send a PDF to Books or Files. The only requirements are an iPhone or iPad, the source app containing or displaying the PDF, and the relevant Share destination being available in the interface.

Limits and interface differences to keep in mind

  • Device: The procedure applies to both iPhone and iPad; iPad may show Share as a tap or click depending on how you are using it.
  • Source: Mail, Messages, other apps, and Safari can all lead to Books, but Safari uses the explicit Save to Books label.
  • Destination: Books is for the Books library; Files is for file storage. Check the app that matches the destination you selected.
  • Region and software version: Apple Books availability and visible labels can vary by region and operating-system version.
  • Document type: Safari can save a PDF or a webpage, so confirm what is displayed before sharing.

Final checklist

  1. Open the PDF itself, not just the message or link that contains it.
  2. Tap the system Share button.
  3. Choose Books for a reading-library copy, or Save to Files for ordinary storage.
  4. For Safari, use Save to Books; use More if that command is not immediately listed.
  5. After saving to Books, open Books and tap Library.
  6. After saving to Files, open Files and check the location you selected.
