You can connect Claude to SAP HANA through an MCP server, but “SAP HANA MCP server” refers to several separate projects—not one standard SAP product. This walkthrough uses the community Node.js package hana-mcp-server with Claude Desktop. The “10 minutes” in the original headline is a target, not a tested setup time: access to the database, network reachability, credentials, and client configuration can all affect how long it takes.
Which SAP HANA MCP server should you use?
The setup steps below use hana-mcp-server, a community-maintained Node.js implementation. Its maintainers document an npx launch for Claude Desktop and Claude Code, along with schema discovery and SQL tools. This is not an SAP endorsement; review the project’s current documentation and code before using it with sensitive data.

| Implementation | Client and runtime | Transport and access scope | Setup considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
hana-mcp-server (community Node.js package) |
Claude Desktop and Claude Code; Node.js 18 or newer. The maintainers list macOS, Linux, and Windows support. | Stdio for desktop and IDE clients; the repository also documents an HTTP entry point from a checkout. Provides schema discovery and SQL tools. | Quick-start path documented with npx -y hana-mcp-server. Configuration requires database connection details and TLS settings appropriate to the deployment. |
SAP HANAMLToolkit (part of hana-ai) |
SAP architecture documentation describes a local MCP server built around the hana-ml Python library for SAP HANA Cloud and names Claude Desktop among supported agent types. |
Documentation describes stdio, SSE, and streamable HTTP, plus attribution of MCP-side identity in HANA connection and audit context. | A separate Python/toolkit route; do not reuse the Node package’s prerequisites or configuration. SAP’s Architecture Center page was last updated June 15, 2026. SAP Architecture Center: HANA ML Toolkit |
| SAP B1-HANA Broker MCP (community project) | For HANA and optional SAP Business One Service Layer integration; the project’s README documents its own setup. | Supports read operations and optional Service Layer writes. The project describes scopes, bearer tokens for HTTP mode, write approvals, SQL validation, row limits, timeouts, and audit logging. It describes stdio as unauthenticated development mode. | More involved when controlled write workflows are required. These are maintainer-documented features, not an independent security audit. Project README |
| CData’s HANA MCP server | Uses CData’s JDBC driver and a Java archive. | Repository documents a local read-only server. | Requires cloning and building with Maven, installing and licensing the driver, configuring a .prp connection-properties file, and adding the JAR command to Claude Desktop. A distinct route for users already working with that driver ecosystem. Project repository |
For a first connection, use a database account limited to the schema and read-only operations you need. Keep TLS certificate validation enabled unless your database administrator has provided a specific, documented reason to configure it differently.

The hana-mcp-server maintainers list these prerequisites: Node.js 18 or newer, an MCP client, database credentials, and an SAP HANA or SAP HANA Cloud database reachable from the computer running the server on its SQL port. The client and server run locally in the walkthrough; the database still has to be reachable over the network.
#1 Best Overall
- Confirm the database host and SQL port with your HANA administrator. Do not assume the example port below is correct for your deployment.
- Obtain a database username and password with only the required schema access. For an initial connection, request read-only permissions.
- Ask whether the HANA system uses multi-database containers (MDC), and confirm whether instance or database-name values are needed.
- Confirm TLS requirements, including encryption and certificate validation.
- Install a current Claude Desktop version and ensure Node.js and npm’s
npxcommand are available to the account running it.
The package’s README documents installation with npx -y hana-mcp-server, as well as global installation and clone/build approaches. For this guide, using npx avoids a separate global install. See the hana-mcp-server README for current instructions; package versions and client behavior can change.
How do I connect Claude to SAP HANA?
Claude Desktop starts the MCP server as a local process using stdio. Add a server entry to Claude Desktop’s MCP configuration, provide the connection values in its process environment, then restart the app. The JSON below shows the documented configuration shape; replace every example value with details for your system. It is not a universal port or TLS recipe.
Rank #2
- Locate Claude Desktop’s configuration file. Use the MCP configuration file for your operating system and installation. If it already contains an
mcpServersobject, merge this server entry into it; do not overwrite other servers. - Add the server entry. Keep the JSON valid, including commas between entries. Store the file so it is readable only by the user account that needs the credentials.
- Check the connection values. Confirm the SQL port, schema, TLS settings, and MDC fields with your administrator. The example uses TLS-related variables documented by the package; do not disable certificate validation just to bypass a connection problem.
- Restart Claude Desktop. The project README directs users to restart after registering the server. Check the client’s MCP/server status or logs for startup errors.
- Test with a read-only request. Ask Claude to inspect available schema information or run a simple, safe query against an object you are authorized to read. Confirm the result against your usual HANA client before relying on it.

These are placeholders, not credentials to publish or reuse. Treat the configuration file as secret-bearing because it contains a database password. Use the host, port, schema, and certificate settings supplied for your own HANA instance. The README describes instance and database-name values for MDC configurations and says to remove them for most single-container setups; add or omit those fields only after confirming your deployment type.

Claude Code uses a different configuration surface from Claude Desktop. The package README documents stdio registration through ~/.claude.json or a project-level .mcp.json, invoking npx with -y hana-mcp-server. Follow the current Claude Code and package documentation for the exact JSON structure and environment-variable placement for the scope you want. Do not copy Claude Desktop’s entire configuration file into Claude Code or assume one config applies to both products.
Why can’t Claude find my HANA MCP server?
Start with the client’s logs and the process it is trying to launch. An error before database connection usually points to configuration or executable discovery; an error after startup may instead involve the database connection or permissions.
- Claude cannot launch Node or npx: GUI-launched apps may have a different
PATHfrom an interactive terminal. The package README suggests using absolute executable paths or supplyingPATHin the MCP environment. Check the actual location of Node.js andnpxfor the same user account before changing system permissions. - The server starts but cannot connect: Verify the host, SQL port, network route or firewall access, username, and password. Check the schema and whether the system requires MDC instance or database-name values.
- TLS negotiation fails: Confirm encryption and certificate settings with the administrator, including whether the certificate chain is trusted by the machine running Claude Desktop. Keep validation enabled where the deployment supports it.
- Configuration is rejected: Validate JSON syntax, ensure the server entry is inside
mcpServers, and check that you edited the configuration file used by the installed client. - npm reports a cache permission problem: Check the npm cache location and the account’s permissions. Avoid broad permission changes until you understand which path is failing.
These checks address common categories implied by the package’s prerequisites and variables; the right fix depends on the specific client, operating system, and HANA deployment.

Should the MCP server use stdio, HTTP, or write access?
These are separate deployment decisions. The walkthrough uses local stdio, which lets the desktop client launch the server as a process. The fact that a project also documents HTTP support does not make a local development configuration suitable for network exposure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Stdio: Appropriate for the local Claude Desktop quick start. Check the implementation’s authentication model; the SAP B1-HANA Broker project explicitly describes its stdio mode as unauthenticated development use.
- HTTP: Use only with an implementation and deployment configured for the intended environment. The broker project documents bearer-token authentication and scopes for HTTP, but those maintainer-described controls must be checked in the actual deployment.
- Read-only access: Prefer this for exploration and reporting. Claude’s ability to formulate a tool request does not grant database privileges; the account’s permissions and server-side policy determine what can run.
- Writes: Do not enable them just to demonstrate a connection. If a workflow needs writes, define the exact write path, such as an authorized Service Layer operation, and verify scopes, approval behavior, validation, limits, and audit controls before deployment.
SAP’s HANAMLToolkit documentation describes identity attribution into HANA connection and audit context. The SAP B1-HANA Broker README describes its own approval and access controls. Those project-specific descriptions are not evidence that every MCP implementation provides the same safeguards; review the code and configuration before relying on them in production.
