Short answer: Samsung Wallet UPI is the Galaxy-focused choice that combines UPI with other wallet features; Google Pay documents UPI tap payments for NFC-enabled Android phones at merchants with compatible UPI NFC equipment. Both offer everyday UPI functions, but their documented capabilities and device requirements differ. The available provider materials do not establish that either service is categorically safer.
What each service offers for UPI
The comparison here is specific to India. Samsung describes Samsung Wallet as part of the Galaxy ecosystem, while Google’s relevant tap-payment documentation covers Google Pay. Google Pay and Google Wallet are separate products; this comparison does not assess Google Wallet.

Samsung Wallet UPI
Samsung’s India UPI page describes sending and receiving money, requesting payments, paying by QR code, making online payments, and instant bank transfers. It says UPI payments are authorized with a UPI PIN. Samsung Wallet also brings together other supported items, including payment methods, digital IDs, travel and mobility items, keys, gift cards, and coupons; availability depends on the supported feature and device. Google Pay
Google’s India UPI documentation lists Scan & Pay, Pay to Contact, UPI Number, and Tap & Pay. For UPI Tap & Pay, Google lists a bank account, UPI Lite, RuPay credit card, or credit line as possible payment methods, subject to what is enabled for the user. These are documented options, not a guarantee that every method is available to every account. Google’s Tap & Pay instructions explain the feature.

Compatibility and where tap payments work
Ordinary UPI payments and UPI Tap & Pay are not the same flow. A QR or contact payment does not by itself require NFC. A tap transaction requires compatible hardware on both sides: the phone and the merchant’s acceptance setup.
Google Pay UPI Tap & Pay requirements
- An NFC-enabled Android phone with NFC turned on.
- An active UPI payment method supported by the feature.
- A merchant acceptance point with UPI NFC capability. Google identifies UPI NFC tags, QR stickers that include NFC tags, and Smart Soundpods with NFC tags as supported setups.
- A device that passes Google’s software-security checks; modified or unsupported configurations may prevent contactless payments.
See Google’s Tap & Pay requirements and its NFC setup and troubleshooting guidance. NFC support on the phone alone does not mean every merchant can accept a UPI tap.

Samsung Wallet UPI compatibility
Samsung positions Wallet as a Galaxy service, so check whether the exact Galaxy model and Wallet features are supported in India. Samsung separately documents card Tap & Pay in Wallet, but the cited India UPI material does not establish a Samsung UPI NFC tap feature or its device and merchant requirements. Do not assume that Samsung’s card tap capability is the same as UPI Tap & Pay.
Security: what is documented—and what is not
Samsung’s stated protections
Samsung describes Knox monitoring and protection, tokenization, encryption, and secure storage in its Wallet and payment materials. Its payment-service description says a card issuer assigns a device number and a key for transaction security codes; it also says data is encrypted before transfer to the device and kept in a secure area isolated from the operating system. Google’s stated protections and device checks
Google says Google Pay follows NPCI’s Mobile Application Security Framework 2025. Its security guidance says the service may be blocked when device settings fail security checks, including when software is not original and unmodified or potentially unsafe apps are detected. Google also flags rooted devices, custom ROMs, modified factory software, developer Android versions, untested devices, and unlocked bootloaders as possible reasons contactless payments may not work. Read Google’s security-alert guidance alongside its NFC requirements.
The cited sources do not provide an independent, like-for-like security audit, fraud-rate comparison, or measured security outcome for the two services. The providers’ descriptions therefore cannot support a claim that one is more secure. For either service, keep the phone’s software updated, use its screen lock and account protections, and protect your UPI PIN. NPCI advises users not to share the PIN in its UPI FAQ.

Samsung’s announced UPI changes: availability is device-dependent
On October 30, 2025, Samsung announced UPI onboarding during new Galaxy device setup and biometric authentication using fingerprint or face recognition for everyday UPI payments without entering a PIN each time. Samsung said rollout across supported Galaxy devices would begin soon, but the announcement does not provide a complete model list or confirm availability on every Galaxy phone. Check the feature on your device rather than treating the announcement as universal availability. Samsung’s announcement describes the planned rollout.
