How to Build and Program a Robot for a Student Robotics Competition

A practical path from game rules to a reliable student-built robot: choose focused tasks, build only what the strategy needs, program incrementally, and test against the current manual.

Start with the rules for your exact competition and season, then build a reliable robot around a small number of tasks your team can perform consistently. There is no single parts list, programming language, or design that works across VEX IQ, VEX V5, FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC); each has its own game manual, legal hardware, control system, and inspection requirements.

Start with the right competition rules

Identify your program, division, and season before choosing parts or writing code. Download that season’s official game manual, then check its updates and official Q&A for clarifications. The manual is the design brief: it defines scoring, match timing, robot limits, legal components, safety requirements, and inspection rules. For example, VEX publishes its current VEX IQ Level Up manual at VEX IQ Level Up Online Manual, while FIRST’s FTC season materials are listed at FTC Game and Season Materials. The cited FTC archive is for 2025–2026; consult the current season’s materials for a different event.

Write down what the robot must do and what it is allowed to do before sketching a design. Include the scoring tasks, autonomous and driver-controlled periods, field constraints, starting dimensions, legal parts, and inspection criteria. Do not carry rules over from a previous season without checking them.

Choose a strategy before choosing mechanisms

Pick a few scoring tasks that fit your students’ skills, available time, and legal parts. A mechanism earns its place by helping the robot perform a chosen task reliably—not just by being technically impressive. Practice candidate tasks and use the results to decide what to build or improve. VEX’s beginner design resource teaches teams to practice, collect performance data, and use it to shape strategy: Getting Started with Robot Design: V5RC Push Back.

#1 Best Overall

  • COMPLETE RECHARGEABLE STEM ROBOTICS KIT: Includes an ELEGOO UNO R3 controller board, ESP32-WROVER-based camera and Wi-Fi module, line-tracking and ultrasonic sensors, motors, IR remote and a 2000 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery; recommended for ages 8+ with adult guidance for first-time builders

When comparing possible designs, consider how consistently each completes a task, its cycle time, driver control, autonomous reliability, size and rule compliance, ease of repair, and whether students can build and program it with the time and resources available. These are useful questions, not a universal weighted scoring system.

Build the simplest robot that serves the strategy

Begin with a dependable mobile base

Make the base stable, easy to drive, and straightforward to repair. Leave students access to the battery, wiring, and controls. Test that the robot moves predictably before adding more mechanisms; a complicated attachment cannot compensate for a base the driver cannot control.

  • Organized for Repeatable Learning: Pre-soldered modules, a solderless breadboard, storage case and small-parts box reduce setup time and keep sensors, LEDs, ICs, wires and other components easy to find between projects

Add only the mechanisms needed for selected tasks

Design each mechanism around a specific game action. Check dimensions, permitted parts, safety, and inspection requirements as the design develops rather than waiting until event day. Requirements vary by program. For example, the 2026–2027 VEX IQ Level Up manual sets a starting robot volume of 11 in × 20 in × 15 in and permits up to six VEX IQ motors; it also specifies a VEX IQ brain, battery, and controller. Those are VEX IQ division rules, not general specifications for student robots. See the manual for the applicable details.

Program in small, testable steps

  1. Use the environment and control system for your program. Confirm what the current rules allow; the competition title alone does not establish a universal language or hardware setup.
  2. Test basic driver control. Make a small program to verify motor direction and movement, then check that the driver can control the base as intended.
  3. Test mechanisms individually. Operate each mechanism separately and confirm its direction and response before combining it with other robot behavior.
  4. Add autonomous actions incrementally. Build one action at a time, then repeat tests under conditions that resemble the actual field. Change one observed problem at a time so the team can tell whether the change helped.
  5. Test the integrated robot. Run complete scoring attempts and match-like sequences. Mechanical behavior, driver control, and code affect one another, so a component that works alone still needs to be checked on the assembled robot.

Match timing is also game-specific. As one current-season example, VEX V5’s 2026–2027 Override format has 15 seconds of autonomous play followed by 1 minute 45 seconds of driver control on a 12 ft by 12 ft field. These details apply to that game, not to other competitions; see VEX V5 Competition.

Test, record, and improve

Practice the actual tasks your strategy depends on, using representative field elements where possible. Keep a short record for each test: task attempted, result, failure observed, change made, and result after the change. That record makes it easier to distinguish a useful improvement from a guess and helps the team decide what to work on next. VEX’s beginner design resource likewise emphasizes making, testing, and documenting incremental changes.

Before an event, compare the finished robot with the current manual, legal parts list, and inspection requirements. VEX IQ, for example, requires a full inspection before competition; its manual says the head referee has final authority on robot-rule decisions. Other programs have their own procedures, so follow their current event materials.

Keep the work student-led

Students should be able to explain how their robot is designed, built, and programmed. Mentors can teach, ask questions, and help students learn, but students need to own the decisions and work. For the 2025–2026 VEX V5 Robotics Competition, rule G2 says: “Students must be prepared to demonstrate an active understanding of their Robot’s design, construction, and programming to judges or event staff.” The rule is specific to that program and season; consult the relevant student-centered policies for other competitions. Read the VEX V5RC G2 rule.

Use a platform-specific parts list

Do not buy a kit based only on the phrase “student robotics competition.” A VEX IQ kit may suit a VEX IQ team, but it is not a universal choice for FTC, FRC, VEX V5, or other programs. Confirm the exact season’s legal hardware, kit contents, control system, and team needs before purchasing. VEX’s Official Path provides a route to its competition and build resources; the applicable program manual remains the authority on what is legal.
