Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your car payment is becoming hard to manage, start by getting your lender’s current payoff amount and asking the servicer about relief. Then compare any refinance offer by APR, fees, term and total cost—not just the monthly payment. Refinancing can reduce the payment, but a longer loan may mean more interest and a longer period of owing more than the car is worth.
1. Get the exact numbers on your current loan
Before deciding whether to refinance, request these details from your servicer:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Current payoff amount and the date through which the quote is valid
- APR, number of payments remaining and next due date
- Any prepayment penalty or other fee for paying off the loan early
The payoff amount may differ from the balance on your statement because interest or fees can accrue. Use the lender’s current payoff quote when comparing a refinance or sale. Your contract and state law govern early payoff; the CFPB’s guidance on paying a loan off early explains why a prepayment penalty is worth checking.
2. Ask your current lender about payment relief
If you may miss a payment, contact the servicer promptly and ask what options are available. Depending on the lender and your circumstances, these could include changing the due date, setting up a payment plan or extending a payment. A due-date change may help align the bill with your income timing; it does not necessarily reduce the amount owed. A payment plan may help you catch up on missed amounts.

An extension can provide short-term breathing room, but it may defer rather than erase a payment: interest can continue to accrue and the lender may add payments at the end of the loan. Ask how the option affects fees, credit reporting and the exact future payment schedule. Get any agreement in writing before relying on it. The CFPB’s guidance for borrowers who can’t make car payments recommends contacting the lender to discuss the situation.
3. Compare refinance offers by cost, not payment alone
A new loan may lower your monthly payment if you qualify for a lower APR, choose a longer term, or both. Request written quotes from your current lender and other credible banks or credit unions. Compare each offer on the same basis:

- Easy to use
- Amount needed to pay off the old loan, including any penalty
- APR, fees and optional products included in the amount financed
- New term, monthly payment and total of all payments
- How long until the vehicle is paid off, and how that timing relates to its likely value and how long you expect to keep it
A lower payment achieved by stretching repayment can cost more overall. In a 2023 illustration, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau compared a $20,000 loan at 4.75%: the three-year version had a rounded payment of $597 per month and $1,498 in total interest; the six-year version had a rounded payment of $320 per month and $3,024 in total interest. These are illustrative figures, not a current rate quote or a forecast for your loan. The CFPB explains that “while a longer loan can reduce your monthly payment, you’ll end up paying more interest over the life of your loan.” See its comparison of longer and shorter auto loans.

Also consider whether a longer term could leave you owing more than the car is worth for longer. The FTC cautions: “Don’t focus only on the monthly payment — the total amount you’ll pay depends on the negotiated price of the car, the APR, and the length of the loan.” Its car-buying guidance is a useful reminder to compare the full deal rather than one number.

4. Check the car’s value before selling or trading it
If the vehicle no longer fits your budget, selling it or moving to a less expensive car may be an option—but first compare a current lender payoff quote with a realistic market or trade-in value. If the payoff is higher, the difference is negative equity. Rolling that balance into a replacement-car loan can increase the new amount financed, term or payment. A proposed lower payment does not by itself show that the trade is affordable. The CFPB’s explanation of negative equity describes the risk of carrying that shortfall into another loan.

Be wary of companies that promise to lower your payments in exchange for an upfront “enrollment” fee or tell you to stop paying your lender. The FTC has warned about these tactics in its alert about car-loan payment-help scams. Contact your servicer directly, keep following your existing contract unless you have a valid written change, and verify any replacement lender before sending money or sensitive information.

| Option | What it can change | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Due-date change | When the payment is due | Whether the lender approves it and the new due date; it may improve cash-flow timing without reducing the payment amount. |
| Payment plan | How missed amounts are repaid | Required payments, fees, reporting and the full schedule in writing. |
| Payment extension | When a payment is made | Accrued interest, any added end-of-loan payments and the revised payoff timeline. |
| Refinance | APR, term and payment under a replacement loan | Written APR, financed balance, fees, optional products, total payments, term and any payoff penalty. |
| Sell or trade down | The vehicle and potentially the debt | Current payoff versus realistic value, and whether negative equity would be carried into another loan. |
