Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For the simplest wired setup, connect the Samsung TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC to the matching ARC/eARC port on your soundbar or receiver. Then select the external audio system in the TV’s Sound Output menu. If either device lacks ARC/eARC, optical may work; Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are model-dependent alternatives.
What you need before connecting
Check the ports on both the TV and the sound system. For HDMI audio return, both must have ports labeled ARC or eARC; an ordinary HDMI port may not return TV audio. Samsung recommends a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for this connection. Supported audio formats and features depend on the exact TV, receiver or soundbar, and audio source.

- For HDMI ARC/eARC, find the labeled ports on both devices.
- If ARC/eARC is unavailable, check whether both devices have optical ports.
- Use the manuals for your specific models to confirm supported audio formats and connection options.
Connect with HDMI ARC or eARC
- Connect the cable: plug one end into the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port and the other into the soundbar’s HDMI TO TV (ARC/eARC) port or the receiver’s corresponding ARC/eARC port.
- Set the audio system’s input: on a Samsung soundbar, select D.IN and wait for the source to change to TV ARC. A receiver may use a differently named TV audio input.
- Enable HDMI control if needed: on supported Samsung TVs, open Settings > All Settings > Connection > External Device Manager > Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) and turn it on. Menu names and paths vary by model. Samsung’s ARC connection guidance gives model-specific connection details.
- Route TV audio to the system: open Settings > Sound > Sound Output and choose the connected device. Depending on the TV and device, the option may appear as Soundbar (HDMI) or Receiver (HDMI). Samsung’s Sound Output guide explains the available choices.
- Set eARC when available: if you connected eARC and the TV provides the setting, open Settings > All Settings > Sound > Expert Settings > HDMI-eARC Mode and choose Auto. For format compatibility troubleshooting, some models also offer Digital Output Audio Format; Auto is a useful diagnostic setting. See Samsung’s sound settings guidance.
Samsung describes ARC as a way for certain TVs and soundbars to send audio back and forth over one HDMI cable. The exact audio formats available depend on the devices and the source path, so check both manuals rather than assuming a particular surround format.
Use optical if HDMI ARC/eARC is unavailable
If both devices have compatible optical ports, connect the TV’s optical output to the receiver or soundbar’s optical input. Set the audio system’s input to Optical or D.IN, then use the TV’s Sound Output menu to select Receiver (Optical) or the matching external output. Samsung notes that an optical device may be selected automatically, but you may need to select it manually.

Optical is a practical fallback, but its supported formats and control features can differ from HDMI ARC/eARC. If optical produces no sound, check the TV’s model-specific guide: some newer Samsung TVs have a Simultaneous Optical Output setting. Verify format compatibility in the manuals for both devices.
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi options
Bluetooth
For a supported speaker or soundbar, put it into pairing mode, then open Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Bluetooth Speaker List and select the device. Bluetooth availability and capabilities vary by model; it should not be assumed to provide a surround-sound connection.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can the Samsung TV remote control the sound system?
Samsung says its TV remote can control volume and mute on a soundbar connected by HDMI ARC or optical. For Samsung soundbars using HDMI ARC, select D.IN and allow the source to switch to TV ARC. With optical, Samsung soundbars may require Auto Power Link to be enabled. Remote behavior with receivers and soundbars from other manufacturers depends on their supported features. See Samsung’s remote-control guidance.
