If your Samsung TV turns on with its physical control, check the remote’s power, signal path and remote type before replacing it. A phone-camera test can show whether an infrared (IR) remote is emitting a signal, but it cannot confirm that the TV is receiving it—or test every function of a wireless Smart Remote.
First check whether the TV itself responds
Try turning on the TV with its physical button or control. If the TV does not respond, the remote may not be the cause; the problem could involve the TV or its power. If the TV does turn on, continue with the remote checks below.

Identify the remote before testing its signal
A conventional IR remote sends light to a receiver on the TV and generally needs a clear line of sight. A Samsung Smart Remote uses wireless pairing and can often work without being aimed directly at the TV. The phone-camera test below checks for IR emission; it is not a complete test of a Smart Remote’s wireless connection. Remote instructions can vary by TV model and region.

Check power and the path to the TV
- Check the power source. For a battery-powered remote, confirm the batteries are oriented correctly and replace both together with fresh batteries. For a rechargeable or SolarCell remote, charge it as appropriate for that model.
- Clear the signal path. Move objects in front of the TV’s receiver and aim an IR remote directly at the TV. Nearby sources of interference may also affect operation.
- Test the remote’s IR transmitter. Open a phone camera, point the remote’s front end at the camera, then press and hold Power. Look at the camera screen for a flash from the remote. If the rear camera shows nothing, try the front camera: some phone cameras filter infrared light.
Interpret the camera test

Pair a supported Samsung Smart Remote
For Smart Remotes that use this procedure, turn on the TV, then hold Return and Play/Pause together for at least three seconds. Wait for the pairing prompt. If the button combination differs or pairing does not start, use the manual or Samsung support instructions for the exact TV and remote model; the procedure is not the same for every model or region.

When to seek a replacement or service
If an IR remote still shows no flash after its power source has been checked and both phone cameras have been tried, it may be faulty; replacement or service is a reasonable next step. Before buying a replacement, identify the exact TV model and check the compatible remote number. Compatibility is model-specific, so do not assume that a remote described as universal will work with your TV.
