What is different between E-Day and Gears 5?
The main difference is where each game takes the series: E-Day is a prequel-style origin story starring Marcus and Dom, while Gears 5 follows Kait Diaz. The games also differ in campaign co-op size, cooperative modes, and supported platforms.

Which game should you play?
Pick E-Day for Marcus and Dom’s origin story
E-Day is the choice if you want to see the Locust emergence and an earlier chapter in Marcus and Dom’s story. Its campaign also has the larger advertised online co-op group: up to four players, compared with three in Gears 5.

Choose Gears 5 if Kait’s investigation is the story you want, or if Horde and Escape are central to how you play. It is also the option among these two with an Xbox One listing.

E-Day advertises up to four online campaign players and introduces Horde Siege, while Gears 5 offers three-player campaign co-op plus Horde and Escape. Horde Siege is described as a 12-player experience divided into three squads; that number applies to the mode, not the campaign.
What is available at E-Day’s launch?
As of October 3, 2026, Premium Edition early access had begun, while the worldwide launch was scheduled for October 6 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific / 15:00 UTC, according to Xbox Wire’s October 1 announcement. The announcement said Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members could join from October 6; access terms can vary, so check the current regional store listing before purchasing or subscribing.

The September 30 Gears of War update describes Season 1 as an eight-week season through December 1, with Ranked Versus scheduled for October 13. It also says the new E-Day sandbox was built from scratch and that some legacy features would not be present at launch, specifically Meat Shields, Chainsaw Duels, some legacy weapons, Private Lobbies, and leaderboards. Those are the publisher’s stated launch plans, not a guarantee about the game’s later feature set.
How do the platform and performance claims compare?
Xbox describes E-Day as a third-person cover shooter built on Unreal Engine 5, with a 4K / up to 60 FPS target for campaign and multiplayer. Those are publisher specifications, not independent benchmark results. The E-Day Xbox page lists Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC; Xbox Wire also names Steam and cloud gaming through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW.

The Gears 5 Xbox listing says the Series X|S version has reduced load times, Instant Resume, variable refresh rate support, and 120 FPS in Versus. These descriptions do not establish which game performs better in practice: they refer to different features, and they are not a direct comparative test.

No single feature makes one a universal replacement for the other. Their campaigns follow different protagonists and timelines, and their listed co-op and PvE lineups are not identical. E-Day is aimed at the Marcus-and-Dom origin story and its new modes; Gears 5 remains the fit for Kait’s campaign, Horde and Escape, or Xbox One play.

E-Day’s Premium Edition early access had only just started at the October 3, 2026 snapshot, and its worldwide launch was still ahead. The official feature and launch descriptions establish what the publisher announced, but not campaign quality, stability, frame-rate consistency, or long-term multiplayer population.
