If a Samsung remote is affecting the wrong TV, first identify whether it is a compatible Samsung Smart Remote or an infrared remote. For a compatible Smart Remote, point it at the TV you want to control and hold Play/Pause + Return together for at least three seconds; wait for the on-screen pairing confirmation. Samsung says a Smart Remote operates with one device at a time and must be paired again when switched to another Samsung TV or projector. If the remote is controlling an HDMI-connected device, check the TV’s external-device controls instead: that can be intentional, not interference.
First identify what the remote is controlling
Changing channels or volume on a second nearby TV is different from controlling a streamer, soundbar, console, or set-top box connected to the intended TV. A compatible Samsung Smart Remote pairs with a TV or projector, while infrared signals can be affected by obstruction or nearby sources of disruption. Samsung TVs can also use their remote to control compatible HDMI-connected equipment.

| What responds | Likely control path | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| A second Samsung TV or projector | Remote pairing or infrared operation, depending on the remote and model | Identify the remote type; pair a compatible Smart Remote with the intended screen |
| A streamer, soundbar, console, or set-top box connected to the TV | Universal Remote setup or HDMI-CEC (Anynet+) | Check the TV’s connected-device and CEC settings |
| The intended TV does not respond reliably | Possible pairing, battery, obstruction, interference, or remote fault | Work through the checks below |
Samsung’s Smart Remote pairing instructions apply only to compatible models. Check the TV or projector manual, or use its model number to confirm compatibility; remote behavior and menu names vary by model, software, and region.

- Stand near the TV you want to control and point the remote at its sensor. The sensor is generally near the lower-right edge or bottom center, though its location varies by model.
- Press and hold Play/Pause and Return at the same time for at least three seconds.
- Wait for the on-screen confirmation that pairing has completed.
- Test the remote on the intended TV. If it was previously used with another Samsung TV or projector, pair it again with this one.
Samsung’s Gulf pairing guidance, updated June 11, 2026, gives the three-second instruction and says the Smart Remote operates with one device at a time. If the button combination does not produce confirmation, verify that the remote is compatible with the exact TV model rather than assuming every Samsung remote uses the same pairing procedure.

Check infrared line of sight and nearby electronics
For infrared operation, a clear path between the remote and the TV’s receiver matters. Remove objects that block the receiver. While testing, move nearby electronics—including lights, radios, or mobile devices—farther from the TV. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance does not specify a required separation distance, so test whether the behavior changes rather than relying on a particular number.
Check the batteries and infrared output
- Check battery polarity. Make sure the positive and negative ends match the markings in the battery compartment.
- Replace cells as a pair when applicable. Use the type specified for the remote; Samsung’s cited troubleshooting guidance does not give one battery size for all models.
- Try Samsung’s camera check for infrared. Point the front of the remote at a digital camera, press Power, and look at the camera display for a flash. Samsung describes a visible flash as evidence of infrared output. Camera visibility varies, so this is a suggested check rather than a definitive test for every camera or remote.
- Consider a fault if there is no flash. Samsung Singapore’s troubleshooting page, updated December 5, 2022, says that if no light or flash is visible after replacing the batteries, the remote has a problem. Confirm the remote type and test conditions before replacing it.
If an HDMI-connected device responds, check Universal Remote and Anynet+
Samsung’s Universal Remote feature can control supported devices connected by HDMI. In Samsung Canada’s guidance, updated April 14, 2026, setup depends on the device brand being available in the TV’s supported-device list; settings vary by TV model and software. Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) also supports control of compatible connected devices. If the device responding is a streamer, soundbar, console, or set-top box, inspect those connected-device or CEC settings rather than treating the response as a second TV being paired to the Smart Remote.

If the remote is from another manufacturer
Setup instructions depend on the third-party remote’s maker and model; follow that remote’s instructions. Samsung US also describes configuring an Amazon Fire Stick remote for basic Samsung TV functions such as power and volume when HDMI-CEC and Fire TV equipment control are configured. That is an alternative control setup, not a guaranteed fix for a remote affecting another TV.
When to replace or escalate
Do not choose a replacement on the assumption that one Samsung remote works with every TV. Check compatibility against the TV’s model number. If a compatible Smart Remote will not pair after the correct button sequence, or an infrared remote still has no detectable output after fresh batteries, consult the TV’s model-specific manual or Samsung support for the appropriate remote and next steps.
