A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If File History in Windows 11 says the drive is disconnected, reconnect its backup destination first. Then let the next scheduled backup run or start one manually. If File History runs but omits files, check whether their folders are included in a library.
Reconnect the File History destination
File History saves to an external drive or a configured network location. Start by checking the destination you selected; a disconnected destination is a common reason backups stop. Microsoft’s reconnect instructions apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10.

- For an external drive: Connect the expected drive to the PC and confirm it is available in Windows. Microsoft uses a USB drive as its example in its File History drive reconnection instructions.
- For a network destination: Open Control Panel, go to System and Security > File History, and select the network location again.
- Start or wait for a backup: Microsoft says to wait for the next scheduled backup after reconnecting. To run one immediately, open Control Panel > System and Security > File History and select Run now.
Microsoft’s File History setup and restore guide covers choosing a destination and using the feature. If these steps do not resolve the problem, the available Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal fix for every error or cause; avoid assuming that a particular disk fault, permission issue, or Windows update is responsible.

Check whether the missing folders are included
File History backs up libraries, not automatically every folder on the PC. The default libraries are Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music. If a folder you need is elsewhere, include it in a library and then allow a backup to run.

Check that a restorable version exists
Use File Explorer to inspect the history for the folder where the item was stored. Finding a prior version is a practical way to confirm that File History captured it.

Restoring over the current version replaces it and cannot be undone. Microsoft describes restoring to another location as an alternative in its File History restore instructions.

File History is only one part of a backup plan. Microsoft’s backup-solution comparison distinguishes cloud backup from external or network storage: cloud backup can make files available across devices and avoids buying storage hardware, but requires internet access. External or network storage can be a better fit without internet access or when backing up large amounts of data.

Windows Backup is a separate option, not a setting that repairs File History. Microsoft describes Windows Backup as covering items such as files, themes, settings, apps, and Wi-Fi information, with backup associated with a Microsoft account. See Microsoft’s Windows Backup guide for its scope.
A Recovery Drive is not a personal-file backup, and System Restore rolls back system files and settings rather than restoring a File History destination. Microsoft distinguishes backups from recovery options in its backup, restore, and recovery overview. Reinstalling Windows or using other disruptive recovery steps is not a first-line response to a disconnected File History drive; review Microsoft’s recovery options and cautions before choosing one.
