Start by choosing a picture mode for your room, then adjust one control at a time using familiar content.
Where to find Samsung picture settings
On Samsung TVs covered by its Canada instructions for 2022-and-newer models, open Settings > All Settings > Picture > Expert Settings. Samsung gives a different route for older models, and menu availability can vary by country. Brightness and Contrast do different jobs
Brightness: overall picture level
Brightness controls the overall brightness of the picture. Adjust it while viewing a familiar scene, and make small changes so you can judge the image rather than a changing scene or source.

Contrast: separation between light and dark
Contrast adjusts the difference between the darkest and brightest parts of the image. It is not another name for overall brightness. Change one control at a time, then compare the same content before and after.
Samsung defines the controls but does not prescribe one numerical setting for every television, room, and input. Numbers shown on a TV’s slider are interface values, not a universal calibration target.

Choose a picture mode for the room and content
A picture mode sets a starting image, so choose one before fine-tuning individual controls. Samsung describes these general uses:

These descriptions are starting points, not rules. Room lighting, the program, and personal preference all affect which mode looks right. Mode availability varies by TV.

Decide whether motion smoothing helps
Samsung’s US support article calls its motion-smoothing controls Auto Motion Plus or Picture Clarity. Depending on the TV, you may see an Auto setting, Off, or Custom. Custom can expose separate adjustments:
- Blur Reduction targets blur in moving images.
- Judder Reduction targets uneven motion, including on content with fewer frames than the display.
- LED Clear Motion, where supported, configures the LED backlight to sharpen fast-moving images.
Smoothing can make live programming such as sports feel clearer to some viewers. On films, it can create the conspicuously smooth “soap opera effect.” Samsung Support explains the difference: “Most movies, however, are filmed at 24 frames per second and are not intended to be viewed with these features.” Its page contrasts live TV such as sports and parades, filmed at 30 frames per second. Those figures are Samsung’s explanation, not a setting target for every program.

If motion processing looks unnatural, turn it off or reduce the Custom adjustments and compare a scene with camera movement. If you prefer smoother motion for sports, try the controls on that content and retain the setting you like. Names, controls, and defaults vary by model; see Samsung US’s motion smoothing guide.
Stop unwanted automatic brightness changes
If brightness shifts while you watch, check whether picture or energy-saving features are adjusting it. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance lists Contrast Enhancer, Brightness Optimization, Brightness Reduction, and Motion Lighting as controls that may affect brightness in response to factors such as ambient light, screen content, or motion. Samsung Singapore’s separate guidance also recommends checking Brightness Optimization, Energy Saving Solution, and Motion Lighting for sporadic dimming, and suggests running Picture Test if the issue persists. That regional page was last updated November 19, 2024. If changing the listed controls does not resolve the issue, check room lighting, connected devices, and apps, then follow the instructions for your model.
For gaming, treat responsiveness as a separate goal
Samsung’s Gulf gaming guidance says Game Mode reduces input lag. It also describes Input Signal Plus as an HDMI setting; on 2018-and-older models, Samsung calls it HDMI UHD Color. Options depend on the TV and connected console. These settings address responsiveness and HDMI signal handling, not the film-motion preferences above.
