There is no proven universal winner. Sony says QSSR can improve image detail and stability on standard PS5, but its announcement does not include a controlled comparison with native-resolution rendering. The answer depends on each game’s implementation—and needs a like-for-like comparison to establish which looks better.
What QSSR and “native resolution” mean in this comparison
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s AI-guided upscaling option for standard PS5. Rather than rendering every output pixel directly, an upscaling technique reconstructs an image for the selected output. “Native resolution” generally means the game renders at the resolution being compared without that upscaling step; however, a game’s menu labels and rendering pipeline determine what its modes actually do.

Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier that grew out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. The company says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize PS5 performance. Sony positions PSSR as the highest-tier upscaling technology on PS5 Pro, while QSSR brings AI-guided upscaling to standard PS5. Sony’s QSSR announcement does not publish internal rendering resolutions or a measured QSSR-versus-native image-quality result.

What Sony says looks better—and what that establishes
Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability on PS5. The developers of the first announced games also describe improvements: Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald says it adds pixel-level clarity and stability in environments, while Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry says it resolves fine detail with temporal stability. These are attributed vendor and developer claims, not an independent head-to-head test.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The announcement supplies no controlled image samples, pixel-count analysis, per-game internal-resolution figures, image-quality score, or frame-rate comparison against native rendering. It therefore cannot establish that QSSR always looks sharper, or that native rendering always looks better. No uplift percentage or universal quality ranking is supported by the published announcement.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games using the QSSR library. Their patches add QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Sony says it will make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers, but has not provided a comprehensive future compatibility list. Support should be checked for the specific game and patch; it should not be assumed from the console alone.

How to make a fair QSSR-versus-native comparison
- Record the exact setup. Note the game, patch, console model, and graphics mode. Check the game’s own settings and documentation to confirm whether an option is native rendering, QSSR, or another reconstruction method.
- Do not infer internal resolution from the output signal. A console’s selected output resolution describes the signal sent to the display; it does not by itself show the game’s internal render resolution.
- Match the viewing conditions. Compare the same scene, camera position and movement, output resolution, display, and relevant graphics settings. Sony notes that PS5 image quality depends on the home entertainment setup. Its resolution guidance explains that 4K output requires a compatible 4K screen and 2160p output selection.
- Inspect more than a still frame. Look at fine detail, edge shimmer, stability during motion, and visible reconstruction artifacts. If the game offers different performance or resolution modes, record those differences rather than treating the image comparison as the only change.
- Separate observation from claims. Label what is visible in documented, matched captures separately from Sony’s or a developer’s description. A fair report should state how the comparison was made and should not turn a marketing claim into a measured result.
Do not confuse QSSR with the PS5 Pro PSSR setting
Sony’s support page documents an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting for compatible PSSR games on CFI-7000 model-group consoles. It does not identify that control as a QSSR setting. QSSR is described in the announcement as an added game graphics option on standard PS5, so the PSSR support control should not be presented as a way to enable or tune QSSR.
What can be concluded now
The official information establishes that Sony is bringing QSSR to supported standard-PS5 games and claims improvements to image detail and stability. It does not answer whether QSSR or native rendering looks better in any controlled, measurable, universal sense. That judgment has to be made game by game, with the actual modes and viewing conditions matched.
