For a compatible Samsung washer, connect it to SmartThings, allow washer notifications, and turn on Smart Control on the washer before using app-based cycle controls. Enable Stay Connect if you want remote access to remain available after the door opens or a cycle ends. Use Laundry Planner when you want a cycle to finish by a chosen time. The available controls vary by washer model.

| Setting | Enable it when | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications | You want to know when a cycle ends, Smart Control status changes, or an error occurs. | Sends washer alerts to connected devices. Samsung says notifications are on by default after connecting the washer. Samsung’s washer guide describes the alerts and notification setting. |
| Smart Control | You want to select or start a cycle from the app. | Enables the washer’s remote-control functions after you turn it on at the appliance. |
| Stay Connect | You want remote control to remain available after the door opens or a cycle ends. | Keeps Smart Control on in situations where it would normally turn off. |
| Laundry Planner | You want the wash to finish near a preferred time. | Schedules the cycle around a selected end time. |
| Washer sound or chime controls | You want to change appliance sounds, and your model supports the setting. | Adjusts washer or dryer sounds on select models; it is separate from phone notifications. Samsung’s sound and chime guide describes model-dependent controls. |
These features are not interchangeable: Laundry Planner is for scheduling, not a requirement for alerts, and a washer chime is not a phone notification.
What you need before connecting the washer
Samsung’s US instructions specify a wireless network, Samsung account, and SmartThings app for the connected features described. Samsung lists the app for Android and iOS. Setup labels and pairing steps may differ by model or app version. See Samsung’s SmartThings connection guide for its connection requirements and setup information.

- Exclusive Installation Bundle: Includes 3-Prong and 4-Prong Dryer Power Cords, Washer Hose Set, 8-ft Vent Duct, and 1-Year CPS Protection Plan
- Smart Wi-Fi Enabled: Control washer and dryer remotely via SmartThings app
- 4.7 cu ft capacity Washer with Active WaterJet & vibration reduction tech
- Built-in WaterJet faucet lets you pretreat stains inside the tub
- Self Clean keeps the tub fresh without harsh chemicals
Not every Samsung washer supports SmartThings, and compatible models do not all offer the same controls. Samsung recommends looking for a Smart Control or Smart Monitor button, or a Wi-Fi symbol, then checking the washer’s manual. A Smart Care button by itself does not prove SmartThings compatibility: Smart Care is a separate diagnostic feature and does not use Wi-Fi. See Samsung’s Smart Care guide.
How to turn on notifications and remote control
- Connect the washer. Add the appliance in SmartThings using the connection flow for your model. The washer and phone need the connectivity and account prerequisites described in Samsung’s US guide.
- Allow notifications. In SmartThings, open Menu > Settings and make sure Notifications is on. Samsung says washer notifications are enabled by default after connection; if alerts do not arrive, also check that your phone permits notifications for SmartThings.
- Prepare the washer. Load laundry, add detergent, and close the door.
- Enable Smart Control on the washer. Select Smart Control on the appliance’s panel before trying to operate it from the app.
- Open the washer device card. In SmartThings, select the washer. Depending on the model, you may be able to choose a cycle and options such as temperature or spin speed, then select Start.
Samsung’s guidance describes the phone, a Samsung TV, or a Family Hub refrigerator as possible destinations for washer alerts. The app guide documents an overall Notifications switch; it does not establish that every app version offers separate switches for individual alert types.
When to use Stay Connect
Smart Control normally turns off when the door opens or when a cycle finishes. Enable Stay Connect if you want the washer to remain reachable through SmartThings in those situations—for example, when you plan to run another cycle. It is optional for people who only want cycle-end or error notifications.

Laundry Planner: choose a finish time
Use Laundry Planner when the important constraint is when laundry should be done. Set a preferred end time and choose from the cycles the feature offers for that time window. Samsung says the washer first senses the load’s weight, then waits to start the cycle at the appropriate time. The exact availability and choices depend on the washer model.
Laundry Recipe: get cycle suggestions
Laundry Recipe can suggest a cycle and temperature based on the laundry types, colors, and soil level you select. It is a recommendation feature, not a substitute for checking garment care labels or model-specific cycle guidance. Availability varies by model.

The washer’s SmartThings card can show the current cycle, active indicators, and estimated completion time. If an expected control is absent, work through these checks:
- Confirm compatibility. Look for Smart Control, Smart Monitor, or Wi-Fi indicators and verify the exact model in its user manual. Smart Care alone is not evidence of SmartThings support.
- Confirm Smart Control is enabled. For remote operation, select Smart Control on the washer after loading it and closing the door.
- Check notification permissions. Confirm the SmartThings Notifications setting is on and that phone settings allow SmartThings notifications.
- Check the model manual for feature availability. Stay Connect, Laundry Planner, Laundry Recipe, and sound controls are not guaranteed on every connected washer.
- Distinguish appliance sounds from app alerts. If a chime setting is missing in SmartThings, it may be available on the washer panel or unsupported on that model. Samsung says only select washer and dryer models support sound adjustments through the app.
The cited setup and feature guidance is from Samsung US. If you are outside the United States, consult Samsung support for your region and the manual for your specific washer, since availability and instructions may differ.
