Choose based on the devices, hub hardware, and controls your household already needs—not on a universal winner. SmartThings is a sensible fit when your devices or Samsung hardware align with it. Google Home is a sensible fit when your devices already work with Google Home and you prefer Google’s voice-control environment. In some homes, Matter lets compatible devices work with both, but it does not guarantee identical features in each app.
SmartThings or Google Home: the short comparison
| What matters to you | What to check |
|---|---|
| Devices you already own | Look up each exact model and the capabilities you need in the platform’s current compatibility information. A compatibility badge alone does not establish support for every feature. |
| Hub hardware | Check whether a compatible hub is already built into a device you own, and whether it supports the radios and connections your devices require. |
| Voice control | Google Assistant can be linked with SmartThings in documented setups. Google Home can also serve as the platform you use to organize and control compatible devices. |
| Using both platforms | Matter multi-admin can let compatible devices be shared with multiple platforms. Supported device types and capabilities may differ, and Google says only one platform can actively control a device at a time. |
| Automation or privacy priorities | Compare the specific routines, controls, settings, and terms relevant to your devices. The available official information does not establish a universal winner for automation depth or privacy. |
Start with your devices and the features you need
Make an inventory of the bulbs, sensors, locks, appliances, speakers, and hubs you already have. For each item, verify more than whether it is listed as compatible: check that the platform supports the particular job you expect it to do, such as a control in the app, an automation trigger, or remote access.

Google says its Works with Google Home catalog includes more than 80,000 compatible devices. That is a Google-published figure, not an independent count, and it is not directly comparable with a SmartThings device count. A large catalog does not tell you whether a particular model exposes the feature you need.

Check whether you need a hub
SmartThings hardware
Samsung lists dedicated SmartThings hubs and selected Samsung TVs, monitors, soundbars, refrigerators, and SmartThings Stations with built-in hub functionality. Whether a particular model qualifies depends on its model and market. Check your existing hardware before buying a separate hub.
Google Home and Matter
Google’s Matter setup guidance lists four prerequisites: a Google Account, home Wi-Fi with IPv6 enabled, a Matter-enabled hub, and a Matter-enabled device. Google says a hub is needed to set up, control, and automate Matter devices while you are away. If your network lacks IPv6 or you do not have a suitable hub, resolve that before choosing Matter as the path to remote control.

Match the hub to the device connection
Some Matter devices use Wi-Fi; others use Thread. Verify that the controller or hub you plan to use supports the connection your device requires. A platform name or Matter mark by itself does not establish that a given hub can connect to every device in your home.

Matter is designed to improve interoperability between compatible smart-home products. Its multi-admin feature can allow a device to be shared with more than one compatible platform, so a household may be able to use SmartThings and Google Home together rather than migrating everything to one app.

Sharing does not mean the platforms expose the same controls. Device categories and available capabilities can vary by platform, and Google notes that only one platform can actively control a shared device at a given moment. Treat each platform’s support for the exact model and feature as a separate check.
Samsung and Google announced a Matter partnership in 2022 that described onboarding compatible devices to both SmartThings and Google Home. That announcement provides historical context, not proof that every device feature is currently available in both ecosystems.

Choose by how you want to control the home
Choose SmartThings when its device and hardware fit is stronger
SmartThings is a practical choice if the devices you rely on are supported there, or if compatible Samsung hardware you already own includes the hub functionality your setup needs. Confirm required routines and device controls individually; available evidence does not support a blanket claim that SmartThings automations are deeper or better for every home.

Google Home is a practical choice if your existing devices are compatible with it and you want Google Home and Google Assistant in your control setup. Google Assistant can also be linked with SmartThings in supported configurations, so preferring Google voice control does not automatically mean every device must be managed only through Google Home.
Use both when specific devices benefit from it
If a Matter device supports multi-admin and both platforms meet your needs, sharing that device may let different household members or routines use different ecosystems. Check setup instructions and supported capabilities for the device and both platforms. Do not assume every existing non-Matter device, automation, or integration transfers along with it.
A practical selection checklist
- List the exact models. Include devices already installed and any hub or Samsung hardware you own.
- Write down required capabilities. Note the controls, automation triggers, and remote-access behavior that matter for each device.
- Check current platform support. Verify the model and each required feature in SmartThings and Google Home compatibility guidance.
- Confirm network and hub requirements. For Google Home Matter setup, check for IPv6, a compatible Matter hub, and the right Wi-Fi or Thread support.
- Decide whether one platform is enough. If considering both, verify Matter multi-admin support and the capabilities exposed on each platform.
- Review privacy settings for the services you will actually use. Compare the current settings and terms for your products and accounts rather than assuming one whole platform is categorically more private.
What to do if a Matter device will not set up or lacks a feature
- Check that the device category is supported by the platform and that the exact capability you want is exposed there.
- Verify the controller, app, device firmware, and network requirements in the current platform instructions; SmartThings requirements can include specific controller firmware and app versions.
- For Google Home Matter setup, confirm IPv6 is enabled on the home network and that you have a Matter-enabled hub.
- Confirm the hub supports the device’s connection type, especially if the device uses Thread rather than Wi-Fi.
- If sharing through multi-admin, follow the device and platform instructions for adding it to the second platform; do not expect both platforms to control it simultaneously.
Platform support evolves, and a Matter label does not promise that every ecosystem supports every device type or feature at the same time. Check current requirements for the specific product and platform before troubleshooting further.
