For U.S. shoppers, neither Amazon nor Apple is automatically the better buy. Compare the exact device, seller, condition, total price, and return-by date. Apple’s U.S. direct policy allows qualifying returns within 14 days of receipt; Amazon’s current U.S. policy places new Apple-branded products in a 15-day return-window category, but eligibility is item-specific. The right choice depends on the offer and which retailer’s purchase and support route you prefer.
How to compare the two options
Start with the same model and configuration on both sites. Prices and promotions change, so there is no reliable blanket claim that Amazon or Apple is cheaper. Compare the checkout total, including tax, discounts, financing, and any extras, rather than comparing headline prices alone.

- Match the device: Check generation, storage, connectivity, color, and condition. A new device is not the same offer as a renewed or used one.
- Identify the seller: An Amazon listing may be sold by Amazon or a marketplace seller. Read the seller and fulfillment details instead of assuming every Amazon offer has identical terms.
- Check the return date: Review the listing’s return eligibility before ordering, then confirm the applicable date in your order details.
- Include coverage only if you want it: AppleCare+ is optional. Compare the specific device’s current eligibility, price, and terms when calculating total cost.
What the return policies mean in the U.S.
For a qualifying purchase directly from Apple in the United States, Apple’s Retail Sales Policy allows a return or exchange within 14 days of receipt, subject to its stated conditions, including returning the product in its original condition with included items. Amazon.com’s current U.S. policy lists new Apple-branded products in a 15-day return-window category. That does not guarantee the same eligibility for every listing: Amazon directs customers to the product detail page and order history for the item’s specific terms and return date. When buying directly from Apple makes sense

When Amazon may make sense
Amazon can be a good choice when the exact listing offers a meaningful price or convenience advantage and you are satisfied with its seller, condition, fulfillment details, and return terms. Confirm those details at checkout; do not infer them from the product name or from another listing for the same device.

Buying from an Apple Authorized Reseller
An authorized reseller is a separate purchase channel, not the Apple Store. Apple says authorized U.S. and Canada resellers set their own return and refund policies. It describes a limited process for requesting a return after an authorized reseller refuses one, subject to conditions that include contacting Apple within 14 days of purchase and providing qualifying proof of purchase. Receipts, warranty, and service
Keep the itemized original receipt, wherever you buy. Apple may need proof of purchase to correct an estimated purchase date or warranty expiration shown for a device. Apple receipt guidance
