For a tag farther away, a delayed location may be normal: Samsung says the tag relies on nearby devices in the Galaxy Find Network to detect and report it. The available Samsung support guidance covers SmartTag and SmartTag+ generally, so confirm SmartTag 3-specific reset and battery instructions in its manual before following model-specific steps.
First, determine whether the problem is local or remote
Nearby finding and remote location reporting work differently. When you are close to the tag, your phone can search for it over Bluetooth. When it is out of direct Bluetooth range, its location depends on a nearby participating Galaxy Find Network device detecting it and relaying the information. The map pin is therefore not necessarily a live GPS reading from the tag.

| Situation | What the app relies on | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Tag is nearby | A direct Bluetooth connection between your phone and the tag | Use Search Nearby and, if available, Ring. Samsung’s SmartTag connection guide describes these nearby-finding options. |
| Tag is out of direct range | A nearby device in the Galaxy Find Network detecting and reporting the tag | Check battery status and finding settings, then allow time for a network update. Samsung UK explains how out-of-range reporting works. |
Refresh the tag in SmartThings Find
- Open SmartThings Find and select your tag.
- Tap the refresh control to request an update to the tag’s information and location. The control and menu wording can differ by app version or region.
- Check the displayed location and its timestamp. SmartThings Support says the app can show up to seven days of SmartTag location history; that history is not the same as a live connection. See SmartThings Find support.
If you are close, use Bluetooth finding
Run Search Nearby
Select Search Nearby and move slowly through the area, following the signal-strength indication. This is intended to help locate a tag that is close enough for a direct Bluetooth connection; it will not force a remote network update when the tag is far away.

Try Ring
If Ring is available in the app, activate it and listen for the tag. Ring is useful when the tag is within direct connection range and close enough for you to hear. If neither nearby search nor Ring can reach it, check the battery and connection settings before attempting model-specific reset steps.

- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes

Check the battery without guessing its size
Samsung says the battery level is shown in SmartThings and that a fully discharged battery can prevent location updates. Its general SmartTag guidance describes a coin-cell battery, but the support material cited here does not establish the SmartTag 3’s exact battery size.
- Check the tag’s battery status in SmartThings.
- If replacement is needed, read the battery marking on your tag or consult the SmartTag 3 manual for the exact type and polarity before buying or installing a cell.
- Do not assume that a battery specification for an earlier SmartTag model applies to SmartTag 3.
Why a remote location may stay unchanged
Samsung UK states that a SmartTag cannot update its own location. Outside Bluetooth range, the Galaxy Find Network needs a participating nearby device to detect the tag and relay its location. If no network node is nearby, the map may remain unchanged even though the tag and app are working. A depleted battery can also prevent an update. Samsung describes Bluetooth range as up to 120 metres; this is a stated maximum, not a guaranteed distance, and real-world range varies with surroundings.

- Update the SmartThings app. Samsung’s general connection guidance recommends using the latest app version.
- Try refreshing the tag again. If it remains unavailable, confirm whether the issue is nearby Bluetooth finding or remote network reporting before changing the tag’s setup.
Before removing or resetting a SmartTag 3
Samsung’s US support instructions describe reset and remove-and-add steps for SmartTag and SmartTag+, but the cited material does not confirm that those button sequences apply to SmartTag 3. Do not rely on an older model’s reset directions. Check the SmartTag 3 manual or contact Samsung support for the model-specific procedure before resetting or re-pairing.
