To enable Developer Mode on a retail Xbox, install the Dev Mode Activation app, use its activation code in Microsoft’s account flow, then choose Switch and restart in the app. To return to normal game use, open Dev Home, select Leave developer mode, and let the console restart into Retail Mode.
What changes between Developer Mode and Retail Mode?
| Mode | What you see | Use it for | How to switch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Developer Mode | Dev Home opens when you press the Xbox button. | Development and testing activities described in Microsoft’s Xbox developer documentation. | In Dev Home, select Leave developer mode. |
| Retail Mode | The ordinary Xbox Home experience opens. | Playing retail games and using the console normally. | Open the Dev Mode Activation app and select Switch and restart. |
Microsoft’s FAQ says switching to Retail Mode lets you play your games. The two modes are separate console environments; switching modes is not the same as reconfiguring a managed development kit or changing an Xbox Live sandbox.

How to enable Developer Mode on a retail Xbox
- On the console, search the Xbox Store for Dev Mode Activation and install the app.
- Open the app and note the activation code displayed on the console.
- Sign in to Microsoft’s activation flow with the developer account, enter the code, and complete the activation steps shown there.
- Wait for the console’s activation process to finish. Reopen the Dev Mode Activation app and select Switch and restart.
- After the console restarts, press the Xbox button. If Dev Home opens, the console is in Developer Mode.
This is the documented app-and-code activation sequence in Microsoft’s Xbox activation documentation. Labels and screens may differ by console software version, region, or account state; if the app or activation page looks different, follow Microsoft’s current activation flow rather than guessing at a menu path.

- While in Developer Mode, open Dev Home.
- Select Leave developer mode.
- Allow the console to restart. It should return to the ordinary Retail Mode Home experience.
Microsoft’s FAQ describes this as the way to return to Retail Mode when you want to play games. The activation documentation also identifies the action as restarting the console in Retail Mode.

How to tell which mode the Xbox is in
Press the Xbox button on the controller. If it opens Dev Home, the console is in Developer Mode; if it opens the familiar retail Home experience, it is in Retail Mode. Microsoft also notes that trouble accessing Store or Live services, or games not working, can be signs of Developer Mode, but the Home-screen check is the direct way to identify the current mode.
Will switching modes remove games, apps, or saves?
Microsoft says installed games and apps are not lost when leaving the Developer Program. Its FAQ describes recovery of cloud saves for saves made while online, so do not assume an offline save will have a cloud copy.

Important limits and dated agreement terms
- Microsoft’s Xbox One Developer Mode Activation Program agreement, last updated December 23, 2021, says activation is limited to three Xbox One consoles at a time for an individual or company.
- That same dated agreement warns that Devkit updates may not be available to non-Devkit consoles and could temporarily diminish or remove console functionality. This is a caution in the 2021 agreement, not confirmation of a newly announced 2026 policy.
- Microsoft’s FAQ says Xbox no longer supports x86 app development or x86 app submissions to the Store. This is a specific documented limitation, not a complete statement of all current Xbox development policies.
- Microsoft’s GDK documentation distinguishes retail-console development workflows from development-kit workflows; some development-kit guidance is limited to Xbox developer program members.
The published instructions do not establish that every Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S model, dashboard version, region, and account state uses identical screens or labels. The steps above describe the documented retail-console activation flow.
