If Apple TV+ is buffering, showing a playback error, delivering poor video quality, or refusing to start a movie, first check whether Apple reports a service interruption. Then compare playback on another device using the same connection. Those two checks help distinguish a service or network problem from an issue with one device or app.
1. Check for an Apple service interruption or sign-in problem
Visit Apple’s troubleshooting guide and check Apple System Status. If Apple lists an interruption affecting the Apple TV app or a related service, wait and try again later rather than changing your home network settings.

If you cannot sign in, resolve the Apple Account issue first using Apple Account recovery or Apple’s two-factor authentication guidance. If the content comes from a third-party provider, check that provider’s service status as well. Apple’s steps cover playback in the Apple TV app—including some channel, rental, and purchased content—so not every failure points specifically to an Apple TV+ subscription.

Install available software updates before testing again. The route depends on the device:
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
- iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV: update the device software; Apple’s app guidance says this updates the Apple TV app on Apple devices.
- Windows PC: update Windows and device drivers, then update Apple TV through Microsoft Store.
- Android: update Android and the Apple TV app through Google Play.
- Smart TV, streaming device, or game console: connect the device to the internet so the app can update automatically; check the manufacturer’s support if the update or restart controls are unclear.
Now try the same title on another device connected to the same Wi-Fi or cellular connection. If it fails on multiple devices using that connection, ask your internet service provider whether there is a network problem. If it fails only on one device, restart that device and check for app or system updates. This comparison narrows the likely source; it does not prove a single cause.
3. Check the connection when video buffers or looks poor
If cellular reception is weak, switch to Wi-Fi and test again. Apple says HD streaming requires 8 Mbit/s or faster in its streaming troubleshooting guidance. For 4K, Apple recommends at least 25 Mbps in its 4K guidance. These are recommendations, not guarantees: other people using the same network, wireless interference, or changing connection conditions can still interrupt playback. Apple also notes that the Apple TV app may automatically reduce video quality when the connection is insufficient for 4K.

If other people are online, ask them to pause high-bandwidth activities temporarily, then retry the stream. On Apple TV hardware, check that the router and modem are powered, reduce obstructions between the router and Apple TV, and restart the network equipment and Apple TV. Install available Apple TV software updates. Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps also suggest testing a direct Ethernet connection to the router or modem if your Apple TV model has an Ethernet port. That wired test can help isolate Wi-Fi trouble; it will not fix an Apple service interruption or an account problem.
4. Adjust video quality settings where the device offers them
Lowering streaming quality can help when a connection struggles, though it may use less data at the cost of picture detail. The controls are not the same on every platform.

iPhone or iPad
Open Settings > Apps > TV, then choose the streaming options. Apple provides High Quality and Data Saver for Wi-Fi. High Quality needs a faster connection and uses more data. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad Apple TV app settings guide for the available options.
Windows
In the Apple TV app, open Playback settings and choose Data Saver or High Quality, which can support up to 4K where the device and connection allow it. Apple documents this in its Windows Playback settings guide.

Some smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, and cable or satellite services include a network diagnostic in the Apple TV app. If available, use this path:
- Open the Apple TV app and open the sidebar.
- Select Settings, then Video Troubleshooting.
- Select Start and follow the on-screen steps.
Apple’s Video Troubleshooting guide notes that availability depends on the device and region. If the option is missing, continue with the device and connection checks above.
6. Compare a live stream with a download
If your device supports downloads, download the title and try playing it. A download that plays successfully can help isolate a problem with the live connection. A failed download may point to another issue, but neither result is a definitive diagnosis. Apple presents downloading as an alternative to try in its playback troubleshooting steps.
