Samsung describes safeguards for both, but the available material does not establish a direct, independent comparison of their security.

What Secure Folder protects—and what it does not do
Samsung describes Secure Folder as a separate, encrypted space protected by Knox. You can place files and apps inside it. An app added to the folder is a separate copy from the app outside it: it can have its own account, settings, and data. You must sign in to the account you want to use in that copy.

That makes Secure Folder useful for separating private on-device material or app activity from your regular device space. It is not a payment-token vault and does not replace Wallet when you want to make a digital payment. Samsung notes that Secure Folder availability varies by device; see its Galaxy Security page and Secure Folder support guide.
Plan for access recovery and transfer
Set a PIN, password, or pattern for the folder. If you want to use Samsung-account recovery after forgetting those credentials, enable that option during setup. Samsung’s Canadian support guide, updated December 17, 2025, says that if account reset was not enabled and you forget the lock credentials, you may be unable to regain access; its stated alternative is removing Secure Folder and setting up a new one.

The same guide says Secure Folder no longer supports creating new backups. Older backups may still be restorable, and Samsung documents transfer using Smart Switch. Do not assume a new cloud backup will be available: check the live instructions for your device and software version before storing anything you cannot replace.
How Wallet limits card-number exposure
Samsung Wallet is for payment cards and other supported digital items, not a general-purpose private folder. Samsung says card details are encrypted and sent through Samsung to the issuer’s payment network for approval when a card is added; the issuer may require a one-time password. Samsung also says a new token is generated during card setup.

When you pay, you authenticate with a fingerprint or Wallet PIN. In the payment flow Samsung describes, the merchant receives a token instead of the underlying card number, and the payment network verifies the token. Samsung’s Wallet security explanation and Wallet FAQ describe these protections.
The privacy benefit has a boundary: tokenization reduces exposure of the underlying card number to the merchant in that payment flow; it does not make the transaction anonymous from your bank, issuer, or payment network. Samsung’s support material says those parties have transaction information. Its regional Wallet privacy notice also identifies payment and device/service information that may be associated with Wallet. The notice applies to its specified region, and practices may differ elsewhere.

Other Wallet items depend on market and device
Wallet may support digital items such as IDs, boarding passes, or keys, but those features are not guaranteed everywhere. Samsung announced Wallet in 2022 as a combination of Samsung Pay and Samsung Pass; treat launch-era examples as historical context, not proof of current local availability. Check current support for your country and device.
What happens if the phone is lost?
Samsung says you can use SmartThings Find to lock a missing device, making Wallet data inaccessible, or erase its data. Follow Samsung’s current instructions for your device and account. Its support material notes a backup limitation for Wallet erasure on a watch; that watch-specific point should not be generalized to phone backups.

Secure Folder’s recovery depends on the setup choices described above. A separate lock helps create separation on the device, but it also makes advance planning important: decide how you will recover access before relying on the folder.

Availability and security claims to keep in perspective
Secure Folder and Wallet features can vary by Galaxy model, firmware, carrier, and country or region. Wallet functions may also depend on the card issuer. Confirm that the features you need are supported on your exact device and in your location; menu names and transfer behavior can change with software versions.

Samsung describes Knox protections for both services. Its Knox security principles page discusses hardware-backed trust, a dedicated execution environment for sensitive software, and isolated storage for sensitive data. These are Samsung’s explanations of its design, not independent proof of a particular level of real-world risk reduction. The available material does not provide a direct comparative test or metric ranking Secure Folder against Wallet for financial privacy.
