Then check photos of the actual copy, seller history, shipping and return terms, and whether your payment method qualifies for the marketplace’s protection. A marketplace’s ban on counterfeit goods is a rule—not proof that a specific listing has been inspected or authenticated.
Start by identifying the exact release
Listings for the same game can describe different platforms, editions or bundles. Before comparing prices, identify the version you want and use LRG’s official information and archive to check the release details. Confirm the title, console platform and edition name; do not assume that a listing with the right game title includes the same extras as another version.

- Distinguish a standard edition from a Collector’s Edition or another named variant.
- Check what the edition includes, such as the game, case, inserts and edition-specific extras.
- Note whether the seller describes the copy as sealed, opened or used.
LRG says its products are bespoke and manufactured to demand. Its FAQ gives general estimates of within four months for standard editions and up to ten months for Collector’s Editions, depending on complexity; the specific product or order page may give a different estimate. Those are direct-order production estimates, not delivery promises for an item being resold. They help explain why a release may appear on resale sites after its preorder period, but do not establish whether a particular copy is available or what it should cost. See LRG’s FAQ for its timing guidance.

Ask for clear photos of the actual item rather than relying on stock images. The FTC recommends inspecting several photos, reading the description carefully and asking the seller questions in writing. For a collector’s edition, compare each claimed component with the official edition information where available.
#1 Best Overall
- Jaws Retro Edition on a region-free physical cartridge.
- Includes Original and Enhanced versions.
- Retro Edition features includes: Save Anywhere, Rewind, Achievements/Trophies, Music Player, and Gallery
- Enhanced Edition includes: Massively expanded, multi-chapter adventure filled with nods and homages to all four Jaws films, New quests and objectives, New abilities and weapons for your boat and diver alike, More challenging enemies, and more ways to deal with them, A robust realization of the NES game's role-playing elements and inspirations.
- Request photos of the front, back, spine and any seals, damage or wear.
- Ask for a photo showing the included contents together, especially edition extras or inserts.
- Compare what is pictured with what the description promises; ask about anything missing or unclear.
- Keep the seller’s written answers on the marketplace.
Photos and answers can reveal inconsistencies, but they cannot guarantee that an item is genuine or complete. The FTC’s marketplace guidance is practical consumer advice, not an authentication service.
Assess the seller and the full transaction
Review recent feedback and account history, particularly sales of comparable items. Check the total cost rather than the headline price: include shipping and consider the stated handling time, seller location and tracking. A very low price for an expensive item can be a warning sign, according to the FTC, but is not conclusive proof of fraud.

Before paying, read the listing’s return terms and the marketplace’s rules for refunds, disputes and buyer protection. Eligibility and deadlines can depend on the marketplace and payment method. Keep the listing, photos, messages and payment record, and pay through the marketplace’s supported checkout or another method whose protections clearly apply. A seller’s offer to move payment off-platform in exchange for a lower price may leave you without marketplace recourse. The FTC advises buyers to check the applicable rules and avoid off-platform payment when it removes that protection; its guidance is U.S. consumer advice, not a universal statement of law.
Compare listings on more than price
When several copies of the same release are available, weigh the differences that affect what you receive and what you can do if there is a problem.

| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Edition and completeness | Is it the right platform and edition? Are all promised components included? |
| Condition and evidence | Is it sealed, opened or used? Do actual photos show the condition and contents? |
| Seller confidence | Is there recent, relevant feedback? Does the seller answer specific questions clearly? |
| Total cost and fulfillment | What is the price after shipping? What handling time, location and tracking are stated? |
| Recourse | What return and dispute terms apply, does the payment qualify, and what is the claim deadline? |
A lower price is not automatically the better purchase if the copy is incomplete, poorly documented or sold with weak recourse.
Understand what platform policies do—and do not—mean
For example, eBay prohibits counterfeit items and unauthorized copies, including bootleg or self-made game recordings. Its policy says sellers should list an item only if they are certain it is genuine and gives documentation such as brand or authorized-distributor invoices as examples of authenticity evidence. That policy can provide context for reporting a suspicious listing, but it does not show that eBay independently inspected or authenticated every listing, nor does it guarantee a refund in every case. See eBay’s counterfeit item policy.

Likewise, LRG’s direct-order terms are not automatically the terms for a resale transaction. LRG says eligible return or exchange requests for its own orders may be made within 30 days of delivery, subject to case-by-case review; items with an emailed digital key cannot be returned. For a resale purchase, check the seller’s and marketplace’s terms instead of assuming LRG’s policy applies. The direct-order details are in LRG’s FAQ.
What to do when the item arrives
- Save the listing and seller messages before they disappear or change.
- Compare the delivered item and contents promptly with the description and photos.
- If something differs, document the discrepancy with photos and contact the seller through the platform.
- Use the marketplace’s dispute or return process within the applicable deadline, keeping communications and payment records on-platform.
Return windows, refund rules and claim deadlines vary by marketplace, location and payment method. Check the terms that apply to your transaction before buying and act promptly if the item is not as described.
