Samsung says the freezer must be at 0°F or colder for ice production. Use the Test button only as directed for your model, and do not force a stuck bucket or try to thaw it with a hair dryer.
Start with the symptom and your refrigerator model
“Not making ice” can mean different things: no ice at all, low output, unusual ice, or ice that forms but will not dispense. Ice production and dispensing have separate troubleshooting paths, so identify which problem you have first.

Find the refrigerator’s model number and consult its user manual before removing an ice bucket or cover. Samsung models vary in ice-maker location, controls, and bucket arrangement; do not assume a removal or reset procedure is universal. Samsung’s general ice-maker troubleshooting guide can help distinguish symptoms, but your model’s manual takes precedence for model-specific steps.
Check temperature, settings, and bucket position
Confirm the freezer is cold enough
Samsung says the freezer must reach 0°F or lower for ice production, including on models with an ice maker in the refrigerator compartment. If the displayed temperature is warmer, address the cooling issue first; a test or reset will not correct inadequate cooling.

Make sure the ice maker is on
Check the model’s Ice Off or Ice On setting. Depending on the refrigerator, the control may be on the panel, in Family Hub’s Fridge Manager, or in SmartThings. If the refrigerator has two ice makers, confirm that the one you expect to use is enabled.
Check the door and bucket
Make sure the freezer door closes fully. On a refrigerator-compartment ice maker, verify that the bucket is fully seated and locked. Remove objects other than ice from the bucket: an item can cause the maker to register it as full.

Run the Test button only according to your model’s instructions
On most Samsung models, the Test button is visible after the ice bucket is removed, but removal instructions vary. Follow the user manual and Samsung’s reset instructions rather than taking apart the refrigerator or repeatedly pressing the button.
- With the ice maker accessible as described in your model’s manual, press and hold Test until you hear a chime. Samsung says this can take up to 10 seconds.
- Allow the test to finish. Samsung describes a test lasting about six minutes for a refrigerator-compartment ice maker and about 30 seconds for a freezer-compartment ice maker. The mechanism should move; at the end, the water valve should hum and supply water.
- If there is no chime, power-cycle the refrigerator for two minutes, then try the test once more as directed.
- If it still does not react, or if Samsung’s reset guidance reports repeated chimes, stop and request service.
These timings and outcomes are Samsung troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that every model behaves identically. Do not press Test repeatedly when the tray is full; Samsung warns that doing so can cause overflow or jamming.

If the test does not fill, check water flow and the filter
Samsung specifies a minimum water pressure of 20 psi. On a refrigerator with a water dispenser, its practical flow check is whether at least 6 ounces (three-quarters of a cup) dispenses in less than 10 seconds. These are manufacturer troubleshooting thresholds, not independent measurements.
- Confirm the household water-supply valve is fully open.
- Check that the water line is not pinched or kinked.
- If dispenser flow is weak, Samsung says low pressure or an old filter may be factors. Compare flow with the filter removed only if the filter instructions for your model allow it.
- If replacement is needed, use a filter compatible with your exact refrigerator model.
If the ice maker has never worked properly since the water line was adjusted, Samsung advises confirming that pressure is at least 20 psi before proceeding and recommends contacting a plumber for help. See Samsung’s water and filter troubleshooting guidance for its flow-check instructions.

Know when to stop and request service
Contact Samsung Support or a qualified local appliance technician if the correctly performed test still produces no reaction after the two-minute power cycle, Samsung’s reset guidance reports repeated chimes, or the ice maker is frozen over. If an error code appears, follow the guidance for your specific model.
Do not force out a stuck bucket or use a hair dryer to defrost it. Samsung warns that either can damage the appliance, and it recommends service for a stuck bucket or frozen-over ice maker. Avoid removing covers or attempting a repair based only on a general guide: the exact procedure and compatible parts depend on the refrigerator model.
