AMD Graphics Stopped Working After an Update? Find the Cause and Fix It

An AMD GPU that stops working after an update may be disabled, running a reverted driver, or affected by an unfinished Windows Update. Identify the exact status before reinstalling.

An AMD graphics adapter that stops working after an update is not necessarily disabled. Check its Device Manager status first: Code 22 means Windows has explicitly disabled the device; a changed driver version, an unfinished Windows Update, or an AMD installer error points to a different fix. Use the exact status or error message to choose the right recovery path.

First, find out what Windows or AMD actually reports

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
  2. Open the AMD graphics adapter’s Properties and read Device status on the General tab. Note the exact code or message.
  3. If AMD Software displayed an installer error, record that number too. A driver-version mismatch or installer failure does not, by itself, prove that Windows disabled the graphics device.

Microsoft defines Code 22 as “This device is disabled. (Code 22)” and says it occurs when a user disables the device in Device Manager. Microsoft’s Code 22 documentation gives a direct remedy. Other messages call for different steps.

Fix Code 22 by enabling the device

In Device Manager, select the AMD adapter and choose Action > Enable Device. Depending on the Windows interface, the same command may appear in the device’s context menu. Restart if Windows asks you to, then reopen Properties and check Device status. Enabling the device is Microsoft’s stated resolution for Code 22.

Finish Windows Update before reinstalling AMD Software

If Windows Update is downloading or installing updates, or Windows is waiting for a restart, let the update finish and restart the PC before running the AMD installer. AMD Error 202 means its installer detected an update in progress and cannot proceed until it completes. AMD’s prescribed sequence is to finish Windows Update, restart, and then install the AMD Software Package. AMD Error 202 guidance

Roll back a driver problem that began after an update

If the adapter is not showing Code 22 and the problem started immediately after a driver change, a rollback may restore the previous driver. In Device Manager, open the AMD adapter’s Properties > Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if that option is available. Restart and check whether the problem is resolved. Microsoft says rollback requires administrator permissions and may be unavailable when Windows has no previous driver version saved. Microsoft’s graphics-device troubleshooting guidance and driver update instructions describe related Device Manager options.

If AMD Error 205 appears

AMD Error 205 describes a specific case: AMD Software installation succeeds, but Windows may revert the graphics driver version. That can leave the installed driver and AMD Software out of sync; it is not the same as a Device Manager Code 22. AMD recommends temporarily turning off automatic driver installation through System Properties > Hardware > Device Installation Settings: choose No, save the change, and restart before reinstalling AMD Software. This is a troubleshooting step for the reported case, not a general recommendation to leave Windows driver installation disabled. Review the setting again after the install. If rollback is unavailable

Get a compatible AMD package for the exact graphics product and Windows version. On a system built by a computer manufacturer, check that model’s driver support as well: the evidence does not establish one package choice that suits every OEM system. Microsoft’s Device Manager driver guidance explains updating through Windows, while AMD’s installer checks can help identify a compatible package.

Choose and install a compatible AMD package

Before installing, confirm the GPU model and Windows edition and version. AMD Auto-Detect checks compatible Radeon graphics, Ryzen chipsets, and the Windows version. AMD’s Adrenalin installation article lists Windows 11 version 21H2 and later and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later for the package it describes; AMD warns that requirements can change as products and features change. For an ordinary reinstall, use the package compatible with your hardware and operating system. If the installer offers Factory Reset, note its consequences before selecting it: AMD says this removes earlier AMD Software packages and temporarily pauses Windows Updates during setup. You will not be able to roll back to the previously installed drivers afterward. It is a more disruptive option than a normal reinstall, not the automatic first step for every post-update problem. AMD’s installation instructions

Use cleanup tools only when a normal install is not enough

If an ordinary compatible reinstall does not resolve a mismatch or suspected driver corruption, AMD’s Cleanup Utility can remove AMD graphics and audio drivers and software before another installation. It does not modify AMD chipset drivers. AMD recommends running it in Safe Mode for best results; it creates a System Restore point before cleanup and requires a reboot afterward. AMD estimates cleanup takes 15–20 minutes depending on how much must be removed. AMD Cleanup Utility details

Factory Reset in the installer is another clean-install route, but because it removes previous AMD Software packages and gives up driver rollback, reserve it for situations where that trade-off is acceptable. When the AMD installer reports Error 207

AMD describes Error 207 as a successful software installation with a potential graphics-device issue detected by Windows. Check Device Manager’s exact status and keep the installer message; the error alone does not establish that the GPU must be replaced. If the device still reports a problem after a compatible install, use those details when seeking support from AMD or the computer manufacturer. AMD Software installation error guidance

Do not confuse a disabled graphics feature with a disabled GPU

A driver update can affect an individual setting without disabling the graphics adapter. For example, AMD’s Adrenalin 26.9.1 optional driver release notes, last updated September 3, 2026, list Smart Access Memory becoming disabled after driver installation on Windows 10 as a known issue. That note concerns one feature, one operating system, and that release; it is not evidence that every AMD update disables the GPU. AMD Adrenalin 26.9.1 release notes
